Georgie Auld LPs with Maynard Ferguson
GEORGIE AULD, IN THE LAND OF HI-FI WITH GEORGIE AULD AND HIS ORCHESTRA -- EmArcy MG-36060
Tenor sax player Georgie Auld put together a studio band to record this great LP on 9/29, 11/7, and 11/11/55. Of course, it included Maynard, along with all the other hot jazz studio musicians in Hollywood. This is ONE SWINGING LP!!! And Maynard is particularly obvious blowing away in the high register in a number of places. It'll remind you a lot of the Rugolo and Bregman sessions Maynard did at about the same time. This one lists for $40.00 in NMINT condition.
COPY #1. This copy has a super clean, original, laminated front cover. Super! There is, however, some of the typical brown toning around the edges and on the back of the cover. There's a 1" seam split at lower right, but otherwise, the seams and spine are intact. I'd rate this cover as EX. The vinyl, which has the original EmArcy silver "drummer" on blue background label, is likewise EX. Overall, this is a nice, solid, above average copy in EX condition. Yours for $10.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one has ultra clean and nice front paper. The seams and spine are completely intact, and there's just minimal wear on the back. This cover is really one of the best I've seen, rating a NMINT- to NMINT. The vinyl has one scuff and one short scratch. I played it, and it sounded fine, with just a few very quiet, muffled clicks where the scratch is visible. (I was surprised, because otherwise, it plays like a NMINT record.) I'd rate the vinyl as EX. Overall, this one is in the EX++ range. Yours for $12.00.
COPY #3. The cover on this one has ultra clean and nice front paper. The seams and spine are completely intact, but there's a little rubbing on the lower seam and there's some brownish toning on the back. Still, this cover is quite nice, EX+. The vinyl has been well-taken-care-of, with no significant problems, and I'd rate it vinyl as NMINT-. Overall, this one is EX+ to NMINT-. Yours for $14.00.
COPY #4. The cover on this one has ultra clean and nice front paper. Both the upper and lower seams have significant splits and abrasions, there's a slight bend at upper left, and there's quite a bit of the typical brownish toning on the back. I'd rate this cover as just VG -- AVERAGE. The vinyl has some scuffs and light scratches, but they're minimal, and I test played it a bit with good results. Great fidelity. I'd call the vinyl EX. Overall, this copy is in the VG+ to EX- range. It's $7.00.
COPY #5. This one has clean and nice front paper. There's just a VERY light amount of the brownish toning on the back. The seams and spine are completely intact. There's a bit of surface wear visible on the back, as well as a significant tear on the back at upper left where someone carelessly removed a price sticker. This all knocks the cover down to just VG - AVERAGE. The vinyl has one or two light scuffs and surface scratches which don't significantly affect play. I'd call the vinyl EX. Overall, this copy is in the VG+ to EX- range. It's $7.00.
GEORGIE AULD, DANCING IN THE LAND OF HI-FI -- EmArcy MG-36090
This LP is a sort of "part 2" to the Land of Hi-Fi LP. It was recorded 4/10, 4/11, 5/6, and 5/26/56 -- about six months after the prior Hi-Fi album. This one has a pair of teenagers dancing on the front cover, so it's a very popular record with those who collect "50s" items. It's pretty much just more of the same swinging charts as on the prior album, and Maynard once again comes through loud and clear in the high register. This one lists for $40.00 in NMINT condition.
COPY #1. Just in, this one has clean and nice front paper. There's a 1" seam split at lower right, but otherwise, the seams and spine are intact. There's some of the typical browning toning around the edges that you find on these EmArcy LP covers, and a small, slightly discolored rectangle on the back at upper left where a price sticker was removed. With all these small issues, however, the cover still is EX- to EX. It looks EX++ from the front. The vinyl has a few scuffs and light surface scratches, but it's EX, as well. Overall, this is a nice, solid EX copy. It's yours for 13.00.
