Jimmy Dorsey CDs with Maynard Ferguson

JIMMY DORSEY, THE COMPLETE STANDARD TRANSCRIPTIONS -- Soundies SCD 4111

In about the mid 1950s, although I'm not certain of the date, two 16" LPs of Jimmy Dorsey's Orchestra from c.1949 were issued for radio station play. They were called Standard Program Library, Electrical Transcription. The catalog number of one of them was X-278, and the other was X-281. MF played on X-278 on the tracks All of Me, In a Little Spanish Town, On the Alamo, Out of Nowhere, and Stop, Look, and Listen. He played on X-281 on the tracks Everywhere You Go and Contrasts. Until a few years ago, getting this material intact required finding the two 16" LPs, and then finding a player that could handle 16" format. It was near-impossible. I finally found the two discs, but couldn't play them on my turntable, which accepted LPs only up to 12" diameter. Then, in the early 21st century (and again, I'm not sure of the precise date), this CD was issued, and it contains all the tracks from these two 16" discs. I was absolutely AMAZED when this CD was released and I got to hear these tracks! A must for every serious MF collector!
