LPs -- Maynard Ferguson with Stan Kenton's Orchestra

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, INNOVATIONS IN MODERN MUSIC, VOLUME ONE -- Capitol P-189

Here’s MF with the Stan Kenton Orchestra on the album Innovations in Modern Music, Volume One. This is Maynard's VERY FIRST recording with Kenton, from 2/3 and 2/4/50 -- just a month after he joined the orchestra. The tracks are Trajectories, Theme for Sunday, Conflict, Indicent in Jazz, Lonesome Road, Mirage, Solitaire, and Cuban Episode. This album was issued in both LP and EP format, and this is the original 12" LP. It lists for $40.00 in NMINT condition.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, INNOVATIONS IN MODERN MUSIC -- Creative World ST-1009

This is a Creative World 1970s re-issue of MF's first album with the Kenton orchestra, recorded 2/3 and 2/4/50 for Capitol Records. VERY early MF work, and he plays on all the tracks. For some reason, this seems to be one of the hardest Creative World albums to find.
COPY #1. This one has the yellow and brown cover. The cover on this one shows just a bit of record ring wear. It's still EX++ to NMINT-. The vinyl has three marks on it. It's EX-. Overall, this copy is EX to EX+. $7.00.
COPY #2. This one has the yellow and brown cover. The cover on this one has a very minor bend in the upper left-hand corner, and you can just barely seen the beginnings of ring wear. But it's still a clean and nice cover, rating an EX++. The vinyl is PRISTINE -- NMINT+. Overall, this one is NMINT- to NMINT. An excellent copy, $10.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, THE KENTON ERA -- Creative World ST-1030

This is a Creative World 1970s re-issue of the 1955 4-LP boxed set. When this came out on Capitol in 1955, it was a limited edition, numbered set, and the collectors raced out to get a copy. The Creative World re-issue featured here is almost identical to the original. It has four LPs, and comes in a gatefold cover. It contains a slipsheet with discographical information. These 4 LPs contain the very best of the Kenton tracks from the early '40s through the mid-50's. MF is included on the tracks In Veradero (2/5/50), Amazonia (2/3/50), Salute, Coop's Solo, Ennui, and Samana (10/14/51), Swing House and You Go to My Head (9/15/52), Baa-Too-Kee (1/30/53), and Stella by Starlight (1/23/53). This is a premium record, hard-to-find in both the Capitol and Creative World formats. The Capitol version lists for $75.00. Although not listed in my price guide, the Creative World edition should sell for about $45.00 to $50.00 in NMINT condition.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, ART PEPPER, THOSE KENTON DAYS (JAPANESE RELEASE) -- Capitol ECJ-50070

This LP is a compilation of Stan Kenton tunes recorded between 11/19/43 and 9/20/51 and featuring Art Pepper. MF is present on the tunes Jollyl Rogers and Blues in Riff (2/5/50), Art Pepper (5/18/50), Viva Prado and Round Robin (9/12/50), Dynaflow (3/28/51), Jump for Joe (5/31/51), Francesca (6/29/51), Sambo (9/19/51), and Street of Dreams (9/20/51). The vinyl is outstanding on this recording, and it's quite rare, and should sell for about $35.00 to $40.00 in NMINT condition.
SORRY! NO COPIES AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, BY REQUEST VOLUME 1 -- Creative World ST-1036

This great LP includes MF on the tunes Jolly Rogers (2/5/50), Blues in Riff (2/5/50), Easy Go (8/21/50), Love for Sale (9/12/50), Round Robin (9/12/50), Night Watch (6/29/51), and Soliloquy (1/21/52). MF solos on Jolly Rogers and Round Robin. It's a great retrospective of his playing during the Kenton years.
COPY #1. This one has the yellow and brown cover. This copy has the slightest hint of record ring wear, and has a horizontal line impressed into the cover about 1" from the top. Not sure what that is -- looks like it was produced that way. But because of it, let's downgrade the condition from NMINT- to EX. The vinyl is NMINT. This one falls somewhere in between EX+ and NMINT- overall. $8.00.

SHORTY ROGERS, 14 HISTORIC ARRANGEMENTS & PERFORMANCES WITH STAN KENTON, JUNE CHRISTY, THE GIANTS -- PAUSA PR 9016

This is a 1983 reissue of tunes reorded 2/5/50, 5/18/50, etc. with the Shorty Rogers and Stan Kenton orchestras. MF plays on five different tracks with the Stan Kenton orchestra. This is a hard-to-find, outstanding reissue album -- much sought-after by Kenton, Rogers, and Ferguson collectors.
COPY #1. The cover would be NMINT, except for slight record wear ring. Let’s call it EX+. The vinyl is also EX+. A very nice copy -- $9.00. BONUS: THIS LP HAS NOT BEEN REISSUED ON CD, SO I WILL INCLUDE A TRANSCRIPTION CD MADE DIRECTLY FROM THE LP AT NO EXTRA CHARGE.
COPY #2. The cover on this one is a very clean and nice NMINT. The vinyl is pretty nice, but does have a few scuffs. It's EX++. This is a nicer copy, in NMINT- condition. $14.00. BONUS: THIS LP HAS NOT BEEN REISSUED ON CD, SO I WILL INCLUDE A TRANSCRIPTION CD MADE DIRECTLY FROM THE LP AT NO EXTRA CHARGE.
COPY #3. The cover on this one is clean and nice, but does have the upper left corner sliced off (a cut-out item). Due to this issue, the otherwise NMINT+ cover is just EX. The vinyl is almost certainly MINT, NEVER PLAYED. Overall, this copy is in NMINT- condition (due to the cover corner). It's $14.00. BONUS: THIS LP HAS NOT BEEN REISSUED ON CD, SO I WILL INCLUDE A TRANSCRIPTION CD MADE DIRECTLY FROM THE LP AT NO EXTRA CHARGE.
COPY #4. The cover on this one is clean and nice, with just a very minor hint of some ring wear forming on the front (black) cover. Still, it's easily NMINT. There are no signs that the vinyl has ever been played, but to be conservative, let's call it NMINT+. Overall, this copy is in NMINT to NMINT+ condition. It's $18.00. BONUS: THIS LP HAS NOT BEEN REISSUED ON CD, SO I WILL INCLUDE A TRANSCRIPTION CD MADE DIRECTLY FROM THE LP AT NO EXTRA CHARGE.

CAPITOL JAZZ CLASSICS VOL. 2, STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, ARTISTRY IN JAZZ -- Capitol M-11027

Contains Blues in Riff (recorded 2/5/50), Riff Rhapsody (3/28/51), and Coop's Solo (9/19/51), all with MF. No major MF solos, but if you want all his works, this is an essential.
COPY #1. This one is still factory sealed, but there is a tiny spindle hole at bottom right on the cover (a cut-out item). There are also some stickers on the outside of the shrink wrap that will come off when the shrink is removed. Still, it's otherwise a MINT cover. Let's call it NMINT due to the spindle hole. The vinyl is, of course, MINT. This one is $8.00.

CAPITOL JAZZ CLASSICS VOL. 2, STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, ARTISTRY IN JAZZ (DUTCH RELEASE)-- Capitol 5C 052-80799

Like the U.S. version above, this LP contains Blues in Riff (recorded 2/5/50), Riff Rhapsody (3/28/51), and Coop's Solo (9/19/51), all with MF. Again, no major MF solos, but if you want all his works, this is an essential. And this is the much rarer Dutch pressing.
COPY #1. The cover on this one is clean and nice, with just the very slightest yellowing around the edges on the back cover. Still, it's a NMINT cover. The vinyl has a few ultra light scuffs and surface scratches which don't affect play. It's EX++. Overall, this copy is NMINT-. Yours for $7.00.
COPY #2. Just in, the cover on this one is clean and nice -- NMINT. The vinyl appears to be MINT, never-played! Just a super copy, it's $10.00.

CAPITOL JAZZ CLASSICS VOL. 2, STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, ARTISTRY IN JAZZ (UK RELEASE)-- EMI One-Up OU 2001

Like the U.S. version above, this LP contains Blues in Riff (recorded 2/5/50), Riff Rhapsody (3/28/51), and Coop's Solo (9/19/51), all with MF. Again, no major MF solos, but if you want all his works, this is an essential. And this is the super rare UK pressing.
COPY #1. The cover on this one is clean and nice, with just a bit of toning around the edges. There's also an original factory price sticker on the front, announcing that it originally sold for only 1.50 GBP. (This is a plus, NOT a minus, like an aftermarker sticker would be!) I'd rate this cover as NMINT-. The vinyl is likewise NMINT-. Overall, a nice, NMINT- copy of a relatively rare LP. Yours for $12.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, KENTON PRESENTS -- Capitol T-248

In case you don't already know, this is the original 1950s Capitol album which features MF on the tune "Maynard Ferguson," recorded 6/5/50. This is one of the two FAMOUS (!!!!!!!) charts that showcased Maynard each night with the Kenton orchestra (the other was The Hot Canary). If you've never heard this, then you just simply haven't heard MF in his ultimate stratospheric playing yet. This is one of the top 10 albums that every Ferguson collector must acquire. It's out of print, and very, very hard to find, and lists for $40.00 in NMINT condition.
SORRY! NO COPIES AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, KENTON PRESENTS -- Creative World ST-1023

In case you don't already know, this is the '70s Creative World compilation album which features MF on the tune "Maynard Ferguson," recorded 6/5/50. STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, BY REQUEST, VOLUME THREE -- Creative World ST 1062

This LP contains three tunes with MF. Salute (2/5/50), Be Easy, Be Tender (8/21/50), and Dynaflow (3/28/51). All three are representative of the Innovations Orchestra from that era.
COPY #1. This one has a white cover with black print. This copy is factory SEALED, in MINT condition! $15.00.
COPY #2. This one has a blue and black cover. This copy has a NMINT cover and NMINT vinyl. It's NMINT overall. $12.00.
COPY #3. This one has a blue and black cover. This copy has a NMINT cover (nearly perfect) and NMINT+ vinyl. It looks never-played. It's NMINT to NMINT+ overall. $13.00.
COPY #4. This one has a white cover with black print. This copy is factory SEALED, in MINT condition! $15.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, THE JAZZ COMPOSITIONS OF STAN KENTON -- Creative World ST 1078

This LP contains six tunes with MF: Theme for Sunday (2/3/50), Shelly Manne (6/5/50), Lazey Dazey (1/21/52), Southern Scandal (2/11/56), Eager Beaver (2/12/56), and Concerto to End All Concertos (2/12/56). The last three tracks were recorded in stereo. This album really highlights the brilliance of Stan Kenton's original compositions. Maynard shines on several of these tracks, but his solo on Concerto to End All Concertos is brilliant! Nice inner sleeve has a great 1950-ish photo of MF.
COPY #1. This one has the gold picture frame cover. This copy shows a tiny bit of record ring wear front and back, and the top and bottom seams have been carefully mended with clear tape. There are some small pen notations on the back cover. Still attractive, I'd call this cover VG+. The vinyl is EX++, expect for one 3-minute spot on the last track which is scratched. It doesn't skip, but does click each time the needle hits it. So this reduces the vinyl to just VG+. This record is VG+ overall. Due to the scratch damage, if you buy something else from me, you can have this for just $1.00. Otherwise, it's $3.00.
COPY #2. This one has the gold picture frame cover. This cover is really, really nice, with NMINT cover and NMINT vinyl! Overall, it's obviously NMINT. $13.00.
COPY #3. This one has the gold picture frame cover. The cover on this one has three very light scratches on the front (only visible in oblique lighting) and an almost impeceptible bend at bottom right. It's EX+. The vinyl has a few extremely light surface scratches. It's EX+, as well. Overall, this is a nice, solid EX+ copy. Yours for $9.00.

VARIOUS ARTISTS, THE HISTORY OF JAZZ, VOLUME FOUR: ENTER THE COOL -- Capitol T796

In 1957, Capitol issued four LPs to recap the famous eras in jazz. This is the fourth of these LPs, and it has the track Round Robin from 9/12/50 by Stan Kenton and his orchestra. Of course, Maynard played on this track. Other performers on the LP include Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie, Lennie Tristano, Woody Herman’s Herd, Miles Davis, George Shearing, the Dave Pell Octet, and Duke Ellington’s Orchestra. It’s really a dynamite LP.
COPY #1. The cover on this one looks NMINT. If you look closely, however, there is a 2” seam split at bottom center. The vinyl is at least VG+. Overall, this copy is EX-. Reasonably priced at $4.00.
COPY #2. This copy has an almost invisibly repaired 2” seam split at top; “May ‘61” is written in small letters on the back; otherwise, the over is NMINT. It’s still EX+. The vinyl is really excellent, EX+. Overall, this album is EX+. $6.00.
COPY #3. The cover on this one has a couple of very, very small corner bends. They're barely noticeable. Other than that, it's in excellent condition -- NMINT-. The vinyl has a lot of very fine surface scratches. It shouldn't pop or skip, but will have some definitely background noise. It's VG, just average. Overall, this copy is EX-. Just $4.00.
COPY #4. The cover on this one is a clean and nice NMINT. The vinyl is a seldom-played NMINT-. Overall, this one is NMINT- to NMINT. It's $11.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, THE FABULOUS ALUMNI OF STAN KENTON -- Creative World ST 1028

MF was present on at least three tracks on this LP: Cello-logy (5/18/50), Sambo (9/19/51), and Easy Street (9/20/51). He's featured on Sambo. A GREAT LP!
COPY #1. This one has the beige portrait cover. Condition is MINT, FACTORY SEALED! $15.00.
COPY #2. This one has the beige portrait cover. The cover on this one is very nice -- NMINT! The vinyl is an ultra clean and nice NMINT+. Overall, it's in NMINT to NMINT+ condition. $14.00.
COPY #3. This one has the beige portrait cover. Condition is MINT, FACTORY SEALED! $15.00.
COPY #4. This one has the beige portrait cover. Condition is MINT, FACTORY SEALED! $15.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, BY REQUEST, VOLUME FOUR -- Creative World ST 1064

He solos on I'm So in the Mood.

COPY #2. This one has the pink and black over. This copy has a NMINT+ cover and NMINT vinyl. It's $12.00.
COPY #3. This one has the beige portrait cover. This copy is MINT, FACTORY SEALED! $15.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, THREE KENTON'S BE BOPPERS GROUPS 1947-50 (VIDO MUSSO, MAYNARD FERGUSON, EDDIE SAFRANSKI) -- Unique Jazz UJ-36

Here's one of the most sought-after Stan Kenton LPs. Yes, that is INDEED the title, even though it's grammatically incorrect. It's a rare Italian import, and I'm guessing that it dates to about 1980. It must have had a VERY small press run. It contains 8 Kenton tracks from 1947 featuring Vido Musso; 4 tracks led by Maynard on 9/13/50 (Short Wave, Take the 'A' Train, Love Locked Out, and Band Ain't Draggin'); and 4 tracks featuring Eddie Safranski from 1947. These are ULTRA RARE here in the U.S. I found my personal copy in Australia many years ago. An absolute MUST for every serious MF collector!
COPY #1. The cover on this copy is a clean and solid NMINT. It's GREAT! The vinyl is likewise NMINT. Just a great, ultra clean copy. Due to its rarity, super condition, and desirability, $25.00. BONUS: THIS LP COMES WITH A FREE TRANSCRIPTION CD MADE DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.
COPY #2. The cover on this one has a few tiny flaws, but they're extremely minimal, and the cover easily rates a NMINT. The vinyl appears to be MINT, never-played. Overall, this copy is NMINT+. Really a nice one! $30.00. BONUS: THIS LP COMES WITH A FREE TRANSCRIPTION CD MADE DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.
COPY #3. The cover on this one has a few tiny flaws: just a faint hint of some record ring wear, and a few small spots of discoloration only on the back cover. Let's call the cover NMINT-. The vinyl looks like it might never have been played. There's just one miniscule scuff mark. It's easily NMINT+! Overall, this copy is NMINT. $30.00. BONUS: THIS LP COMES WITH A FREE TRANSCRIPTION CD MADE DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.
COPY #4. The cover on this one has a few tiny flaws: a few tiny creases around the edges, and some small spots of discoloration only on the back cover. Let's call the cover NMINT-. The vinyl looks like it might never have been played. It's easily NMINT+! Overall, this copy is NMINT. $30.00. BONUS: THIS LP COMES WITH A FREE TRANSCRIPTION CD MADE DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.
COPY #5. The cover on this one is a clean and nice NMINT. The vinyl appears to be MINT, never played. Truly a superior copy, it's NMINT++. $32.00. BONUS: THIS LP COMES WITH A FREE TRANSCRIPTION CD MADE DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.
COPY #6.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, ONE NIGHT STAND WITH STAN KENTON IN 1950 (CAVALCADE OF BANDS) -- Joyce LP-1060

Here's the Kenton orchestra with MF on 8 tracks from 12/19/50: Lover, The Peanut Vendor, They Didn't Believe Me, Laura, Eager Beaver, Presentation of Downbeat Awards and Presentation of Toy Piano (to Stan), Santa Claus is Coming to Town, and Love for Sale. There are also 4 tracks from 1945, but MF isn't on them, of course. This is an extremely tough LP to find!
COPY #1. The cover on this one has quite a few ultra light brown spots in places, front and back. They're very light, and I think they may be spots where the original cover glue came through the cover paper a bit. Other than this, the cover is ultra clean and nice. Let's call it EX++. The vinyl is a seldom-played NMINT-. This one is priced at $20.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one is super clean and nice, but there's a hole punch at upper right. This reduces an otherwise NMINT cover to just EX+. The vinyl is a seldom-played NMINT+. Overall, this copy is in the NMINT- range (due to the hole punch). It's $15.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, STAN KENTON (#2) VOL. 2 (UK RELEASE) -- Echo Jazz EJLP 19

This LP was released in England in 1990. The pressing must have been miniscule, as I almost never see a copy. It's a compilation of radio broadcasts of the Kenton Orchestra from the year 1950. Precise dates are not noted on the cover, but MF is obviously on most, if not all, of the tracks. Tracks include Love for Sale, Blues in Riff, Machito, Southern Scandal, Unison Riff, Artistry in Bolero, The Peanut Vendor, Easy Go, Viva Prado, Minor Riff, Theme From (sic) Alto, Eager Beaver, I Only Have Eyes for You, and Artistry in Tango. These tracks were digitally remastered prior to being laid down on vinyl. This is an ultra, ultra rare LP!!!
SORRY! NO COPIES AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, BIG BANDS - STAN KENTON -- Time Life Music STBB 13

Here's a 2-LP boxed set from Time Life Music. These LPs are audiophile, half-speed mastered. Maynard appears on just one track: Artistry in Tango, from 3/20/51. A wonderful pressing!
COPY #1. Just in, this is the first copy of this boxed set I've ever had for sale on the website. And this one is MINT, FACTORY SEALED. It's $12.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, ARTISTRY IN TANGO -- Gramercy 5 GM 7704

Here's a rare Stan Kenton LP with MF playing on 4 tracks: Artistry in Tango (3/20/51), Laura (5/28/51), Easy Go (8/21/50), and Street of Dreams (9/20/51). These are exceptionally hard LPs to find. I've only seen less than a handful.
COPY #1. Just in, this is the first copy of this LP I've ever had for sale on the website. The cover on this one is NMINT-, with the only issue being a corner bend at upper left and a VERY minor corner bend at lower left. The vinyl is NMINT+. Overall, a NMINT copy, it's yours for $20.00.
COPY #2. Just in, this one has a nice cover, with the only problems being a 1" seam split at bottom right, a "grain of rice size" sticker removal spot on the front, and the phrase "Kenton by Lee p.661" written in small writing on the top of the back cover. I'd rate this cover as EX. The vinyl is a pristing NMINT++, possibly MINT, NEVER PLAYED. Overall, this copy is in the NMINT- range. It's $16.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, THE LIGHTER SIDE -- Creative World ST 1050

Here's probably the most sought-after Kenton Creative World release. MF appears on the tunes Tortillas and Beans (solos, 3/28/51), Stardust Boogie (solos, 5/28/51), The Hot Canary (featured soloist, 5/31/51), Blues in Burlesque (solos, 9/20/51), And the Bull Walked Around, Olay (2/11/53), and A-Ting A-Ling (1/25/55). With MF soloing on 4 of these 6 tracks, and with his most famous piece of all time, The Hot Canary, this is a highly prized and sought-after LP. Every one I get sells in just a few hours or days.
COPY #1. The cover on this one is yellow and brown. The cover on this one has a little of the typical record ring wear, but it's not too bad. There's a slight bend in the bottom right corner. The cover is still a solid EX to EX+. The vinyl, on the other hand, is very pristine. There is one tiny and VERY light surface scratch which doesn't affect play whatsoever. It looks like it might have been placed on a turntable spindle once. It sounds GREAT! NMINT+. Overall, let's call this copy NMINT- to NMINT. It's $14.00. NOTE: This LP comes with a CD that has been made directly from the vinyl. This backup CD is absolutely free with the purchase of the LP.
COPY #2. The cover on this one is yellow and brown. Just in, this one is MINT, FACTORY SEALED. You won't find one nicer. It's $20.00. NOTE: This LP comes with a CD that has been made directly from the vinyl. This backup CD is absolutely free with the purchase of the LP.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, ONE NIGHT STAND WITH STAN KENTON IN 1951 -- Joyce LP-1070

This is one of the very rare and desirable Joyce LPs. This one was recorded at the Hollywood Palladium, March, 1951. It includes MF on all tracks, and tunes include Jambo, Autumn Leaves, Southern Scandal, Yesterdays, Viva Prado, Walkin' by the River, Lullaby in Rhythm, I'll Remember April, Love for Sale, Painted Rhythm, Laura, and Blues in Riff. Great, great stuff, and a must in every serious MF collection!
COPY #1. Just in, this is the first copy of this great LP that I've had in stock in a very long time. Unfortunately, the cover has a core hole at upper right, and some sticker residue at upper left. Too bad, because otherwise it's a pristine cover. Due to these problems, let's rate it as EX-. The disc itself is NMINT-. Overall, this copy is in the EX to EX+ range. It's $17.00.
COPY #2. The copy is MINT, FACTORY SEALED. You won't find one nicer. It's $25.00.

STAN KENTON, LIVE IN 1951 AT THE HOLLYWOOD PALLADIUM, VOLUME 1 (UK Release) -- Jazz Band Records EB413

Here's a 1989 UK LP, pressed in France, with the following tracks from a 1951 engagement at the Hollywood Palladium: Theme Machito, Stardust, Gone with the Wind, Eager Beaver, Easy Go, Lover, Love for Sale, Collaboration, Minor Riff, Autumn Leaves, Blues in Riff, and Viva Prado. MF is, of course, featured in this recording.
COPY #1. The cover on this copy is super clean and nice, with the only problem being a tiny disturbance on the back where a price sticker was removed. There's just a little roughness in the cover paper. Still, this is easily a NMINT cover. The vinyl is likewise an ultra clean and shiny NMINT. Overall, a super, NMINT copy! Yours for $17.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one is almost like new, with the only problem being some very light foxing (tiny brown spots) on the back cover. It's still easily NMINT. The vinyl is MINT, never-played. Overall, it's a NMINT+ copy, and it's yours for $19.00.
COPY #3. This one is still in the original factory wrapper. It's MINT. $22.00.
COPY #4. This one is still in the original factory wrapper. It's MINT. $22.00.
COPY #5. This one is still in the original factory wrapper. It's MINT. $22.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, ARTISTRY IN RHYTHM -- Creative World ST 1043

Kenton recorded Artistry in Rhythm prior to Maynard's tenure with the band. It was originally issued in the late '40s in 10" format. The Creative World version of this album, issued in the early '70s, has all the tunes from the '40s album, plus the tune Santa Lucia (recorded 9/14/50) with MF. He's just on this one track, so be aware that you won't be getting an album full of Ferguson. But if you collect Maynard, this is needed for completeness.
COPY #1. The cover on this one is yellow and brown. Cover and vinyl are both EX, with just a faint record wear ring on the cover, but no damage. A nice, solid copy. $5.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, THE COMPREHENSIVE KENTON -- Capitol EMI STB-12016

Here's a 1979 Capitol compilation 2-LP set with Maynard on 11 tracks. He's on the track September Song from 3/20/51, as well as 10 tracks from the Kenton in Hi-Fi session, recorded 2/11 - 2/12/56. This is not a super rare LP, but it's no longer that easy to find, either. The fidelity is excellent!
COPY #1. This is the first copy of this LP that I've ever had posted on the website. The cover on this one is relatively clean and nice, easily rating a NMINT-. The discs are still in their original custom inner sleeves, and they rate a NMINT-, too. Yours for $15.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, THE STAN KENTON STORY (DUTCH PRESSING) -- Capitol 5C-052.80.832

Here's a rare Dutch compilation LP from probably the 1970s. It has various Kenton tracks from 1943 through 1951, including the track Jump for Joe (with MF) from 5/31/51. Exceptionally RARE LP ... I've seen less than a handfull in all these years.
COPY #1. This is the first copy of this rare LP that I've ever had posted on the website. The cover on this one has writing front and back, but since the cover is black, the writing is almost imperceptible. Because of the writing, however, the cover is just EX. The vinyl is NMINT. A nice, solid, copy of a rare European pressing. $17.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, ONE NIGHT STAND WITH STAN KENTON, VOLUME 2 -- Joyce LP-1016

Here's a great LP of MF with the Stan Kenton band, recorded at the Steel Pier, Atlantic City, New Jersey in July, 1951. MF is pictured on the front cover in the band's 1951 summer plaid tuxedo. Really hip, man! Maynard comes through loud and clear on a number of tracks, but is most sensational on the piece that was named for him -- "Maynard Ferguson." It absolutely SCREAMS!!!!!!! I've heard several collectors say that they feel this is his best extant recording of that tune, and they may be right. These Joyce LPs are very, very hard to come by. If you don't already have one, I'd strongly recommend this one to you.
COPY #1. The cover on this one is really clean. There's a 3/8" seam split at lower right -- it's very small. There are also two light wrinkles in the cover paper. Again, they're minor. I'd rate this cover as NMINT-. The vinyl looks like it's only been played a couple of times. It's NMINT. Overall, this is a nice solid NMINT- to NMINT copy. It's $15.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one would easily be NMINT, but someone used clear tape to repair an upper center seam crack. This reduces it to NMINT-. The vinyl is a clean and nice NMINT. Overall, this copy is NMINT- to NMINT. Yours for $15.00.
COPY #3. The cover on this copy has very tiny corner bends at upper left and lower right. They're hard to see except in oblique lighting. I'd rate this cover, which is otherwise pristine, as NMINT-. The vinyl is a seldom-played NMINT. Overall, this copy is in the NMINT- to NMINT range. It's $15.00.
COPY #4. This copy is MINT, FACTORY SEALED. It's $22.00.
COPY #5. This copy is MINT, FACTORY SEALED, with just a few record store stickers on the outside of the shrink wrap. It's $20.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, NINETEEN FIFTY-ONE (UK RELEASE) -- First Heard FH1004

Here's a rare, 1981 British import LP of Stan Kenton's Orchestra, recorded between February and April of 1951 during the Kenton Orchestra's 10th anniversary celebrations at the Palladium Ballroom in Hollywood. Maynard is heard throughout. This is a very, very hard-to-find LP, and I seldom see a copy.
COPY #1. Just in, this is the first copy of this LP I've had in some time. The cover on this copy has a couple of the typical light creases that show up on these thin covers. They're minor, and the cover is still NMINT. The vinyl is a seldom-played NMINT, as well. Overall, this is a nice, NMINT copy. Yours for $22.00.
COPY #2. Finally, another copy. The cover on this one shows a little of the typical light creasing and wear that's common to this LP, but it's very minor, and the cover still rates a NMINT. The vinyl is likewise a clean and nice NMINT. Overall, it's in NMINT condition, priced at $22.00.
COPY #3. The cover on this one is clean and nice, with the only issue being a corner bend at upper right, and it rates a NMINT-. The vinyl is NMINT. Overall, a NMINT- to NMINT copy, it's $20.00.
COPY #4. The cover on this one has a small rectangular discoloration at upper right where a price sticker was removed. Otherwise, this is a very clean and nice cover. Let's call it NMINT-. The vinyl looks great except for a couple of surface scuffs, and obviously hasn't been played more than 2 or 3 times. It's NMINT. Overall, this one is NMINT- to NMINT. It's $20.00.

VARIOUS ARTISTS, SCREWBALLS IN SWINGTIME -- Bandstand Records 7106

Here's a crazy big band LP with weird tunes from various bands. Included is the Stan Kenton tune Blues in Burlesque from 9/20/51. The liner notes say, "This gem by Stan Kenton features some of the most hilarious blowing by one band you'll ever hear, with Maynard Ferguson leading the way ...". This is a VERY, VERY RARE LP. Extremely hard to find!!!
COPY #1. This is the first copy of this LP I've every had for sale on this website, other than one copy in the Major Collector Sale. This one is still in the factory shrink wrap, although it has been opened. I'd rate the cover as NMINT to NMINT+. The vinyl looks like it may have been played once! It's NMINT++! Overall, this copy is in NMINT to NMINT+ condition -- really clean and nice. It's yours for $35.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one shows a little toning in places. There's a minor corner bend at bottom left, and a bit of edge wear in places. On the back, someone wrote "#0421" in the upper right corner. So, with these numerous small flaws, the best I can rate the cover is EX-. The vinyl is EX+. Overall, let's call this one EX. It's priced at $20.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, 3 DECADES OF BIG BAND DEVELOPMENT (GERMAN RELEASE) -- Capitol 1 C 148-81 157/158

Here's the hard-to-find German double gatefold compilation LP of Stan Kenton's Orchestra, recorded between the 1940s and 1960s, and released about 1979. There's some really great material here, and MF is represented on the tracks Samana (10/14/51), Entrance from "City of Glass" (12/5/51), Young Blood (9/52), Pennies from Heaven (1/28/53), and Intermission Riff (2/56). But there are some other incredible tracks, too, such as The Singing Oyster (one of my absolute favorite Kenton charts) from the '60s. A super collection of Kenton tunes from several decades.
COPY #1. The cover on this one has a tiny tear in the front paper, about the size of two grains of rice, at upper right. It's hard to even see it, but needed to be mentioned. Someone also put a few light blue ink marks on the back cover next to a couple of tracks. They're very faint. I'd rate this cover as EX to EX+. The vinyl is NMINT. This one is yours for $16.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one is a relatively clean and nice NMINT. The vinyl is really pristine -- NMINT++ to possibly MINT, never-played. It's yours for $20.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, CARNEGIE (UK RELEASE) -- First Heard FH1006

Here's a rare, 1981 British import LP of Stan Kenton's Orchestra, recorded 10/19 and 10/20/51, at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Maynard is heard throughout, but is especially great on his two solo efforts -- the track MAYNARD FERGUSON, and the track SAMBA. This is a very, very hard-to-find LP, and only recently, by really digging hard, have I been able to find some copies.
COPY #1. The cover on this copy has just the very beginnings of a seam crack at bottom center. It's very minor, and the cover is still NMINT. The vinyl is NMINT to NMINT+. Really a super copy! $30.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this copy is a very nice NMINT. The vinyl has a number of very light surface scratches on side 1 only, which don't affect play other than just a tiny bit of background noise on one track. It's in the EX+ to NMINT- range. Overall, this copy is NMINT-. $22.00.
COPY #3. The cover on this one is nearly crease-free (unusual for this cover). It's easily NMINT, tending to NMINT+. The vinyl is absolutely pristine -- possibly never played. It's NMINT++. Overall, this copy is a near flawless NMINT+. Yours for $32.00.
COPY #4. Wow, I've been super lucky in trading for and buying these LPs lately. This copy has a very nice cover, with the only problem being a corner bend at lower left. This reduces it from an unquestionable NMINT to NMINT-. The vinyl is a clean and nice NMINT -- close to NMINT+. Overall, this copy is in the NMINT- to NMINT range. $25.00.
COPY #5. The cover on this copy has four small sticker abrasions (from sticker removals). On the front, there's one at upper left; on the back, at upper left, upper right, and lower right. Would someone please SHOOT the record dealer who felt the need to put all these stickers on the cover at some time in the past? This reduces an otherwise NMINT cover to just EX-. The vinyl, however, is top notch. It's a seldom played NMINT+!!! Overall, this one is in the EX++ range, but keep in mind that the vinyl is pristine! A great copy to transcribe to CD if you don't mind the cover. Just $15.00.

STAN KENTON, INNOVATIONS IN MODERN MUSIC CONCERT, SEATTLE, NOVEMBER 25, 1951 -- Mark 56 Records 860

Here's a rare, 1984 pressing of the Seattle Innovations Orchestra concert from 11/25/51. This is a double LP in a gatefold cover, and it was issued by a small company in California. As far as I know, that company is now defunct, and these LPs are ultra hard to find. Tracks include the great tune "Maynard Ferguson"!!! A must for every serious MF collection.
SORRY! NO COPIES AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA WITH CHARLIE PARKER AND DIZZY GILLESPIE, KENTON AND BIRD (ITALIAN? RELEASE) -- Jazz Supreme JS 103

Here's an ultra rare, 1980s pressing of two different concerts. The first one, from an unknown date in 1951, is referred to as the "March of Dimes" transcription, and includes MF in the orchestra. The second is from 2/25/54, when Bird and Diz joined Kenton for a concert in Portland. This part of the recording does not contain MF. Tracks with MF include Artistry in Rhythm, Love for Sale, Collaboration, But Then You Kissed Me, and Lover, as well as two different March of Dimes messages. This is an EXTREMELY hard recording to come by.
SORRY! NO COPIES AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.

STAN KENTON CONDUCTS ROBERT GRAETTINGER'S CITY OF GLASS AND THIS MODERN WORLD –- Capitol W736

This is without a doubt one of the finest examples of the Stan Kenton Orchestra in a progressive jazz format. The composer, Robert Graettinger, was a genius! And Maynard is featured prominently on several of these tracks, including A Horn, Reflections, and Dance Before the Mirror (recorded 12/5/51), Entrance into the City and Structures (recorded 12/7/51), and A Trumpet and An Orchestra (recorded 2/11/53). This 12" LP version was issued in 1956. This is a very popular record with jazz collectors! List price in NMINT condition is $40.00.
COPY #1. Just in, this is the first copy of this LP I've had in a very long time. The cover on this one shows just a bit of surface wear, and there's a little roughness on the center of the spine, but still, this is a very nice EX++ cover. The vinyl is pretty rought, with some deep scratches on the first track on each side. On my turntable it plays with just pops and no skips, but if you have a very fine tone arm, it might skip on your player. I'm going to rate this vinyl as just "GOOD," which in English means "not so hot." Overall, this is just a VG copy -- average, at best. It's only $4.00.

STAN KENTON CONDUCTS ROBERT GRAETTINGER'S CITY OF GLASS AND THIS MODERN WORLD –- Creative World ST-1006

Here's the 1970s Creative World re-issue of the original Capitol LP. This is a very popular record with jazz collectors!

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, ONE NIGHT STAND WITH STAN KENTON'S CONCERT IN MINIATURE NO. 9 AND 10 -- Joyce LP-1087

Here's another one of the rare Joyce LPs. Side 1 was recorded at the Steel Pier, Atlantic City, NJ on 7/29/52, and includes the tracks Collaboration, Limelight, Somnambolism, I've Got You Under My Skin, Frank Speaking, Artistry in Rhythm, and Peanut Vendor. Side 2 was recorded at Club 86, Geneva, NY on 8/5/52, and includes the tracks Taboo, Portrait of a Count, Young Blood, Stella by Starlight, and Peanut Vendor. Maynard plays on all tracks. This is a rare and VERY desirable LP!!!
COPY #1. Here's the first copy of this relatively rare LP that I've had in stock in some time. The cover on this one would be NMINT++, except there's one tiny brown spot on the back cover (perhaps a spot of glue from the assembly operation), and there's a hole punch at upper right -- a cut-out item. This reduces the cover to just EX. The vinyl is a super clean and nice NMINT+. Due to the cored cover, this one is just $17.00.

STAN KENTON, ONE NIGHT STAND WITH STAN KENTON'S CONCERT IN MINIATURE NO. 11 & 12 –- Joyce 1090

Here's one of the super hard-to-find Joyce LPs. It was recorded 8/12/52 at the Cheswick Arena in Pittsburg, PA and 8/19/52 at the Flamingo Gardens, Lima, OH. Great stuff with MF, and very, very hard to find!
COPY #1. The cover on this one is a nice NMINT. The vinyl is a super clean and nice NMINT+! Overall, this copy is NMINT to NMINT+. It's yours for $28.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one is a nice, solid NMINT. The vinyl is NMINT+, and it looks like it's never-played. Just a super copy, this one is yours for $28.00.
COPY #3. The cover on this one is relatively clean and nice, but does have a couple of small, light spots where it's slightly discolored. Any dealer I know would call it NMINT, but I'm going to err on the side of caution and call it NMINT-. The vinyl is a seldom, if ever, played NMINT+. Overall, this one is in the NMINT range. It's $25.00.

STAN KENTON, STAN KENTON'S CONCERT IN MINIATURE NO. 13 & 14 –- Joyce 1093

Here's one of the super hard-to-find Joyce LPs. It was recorded 8/26/52 at the Moonlight Gardens in Cincinnati, OH and 9/2/52 at the Theatre No. 2, Fort Sheridan, IL. Great stuff with MF, and very, very hard to find!
COPY #1. Just in, this is the first copy of this relatively rare LP I've had in stock in some time. The cover on this one is a super clean NMINT to NMINT+! The vinyl is super clean -- NMINT++, and perhaps MINT, never played. This one is $32.00.

VARIOUS ARTISTS, FULL DIMENSIONAL SOUND, A STUDY IN HIGH FIDELITY –- Capitol SAL-9020

Here's an incredibly rare LP. It contains various artists, and is a sampler record of tracks recorded in high fidelity by Capitol in the early 1950s. It comes in a box with a booklet which explains everything you'd ever want to know about "full dimensional sound." Of interest to us is the Stan Kenton track 23 Degrees North - 82 Degrees West, recorded 9/12/52. A great track with MF, and a demo LP that is very, very hard to find! (I think it may have been only given out to record stores.)
COPY #1. Just in, this is the first copy of this LP I've ever posted on the website. They're very, very hard to come by. The cover on this one has a little tearing on the spine, but otherwise is in great shape. The disc is NMINT. Rare! $20.00.

STAN KENTON, ONE NIGHT STAND WITH STAN KENTON'S ENCORES #1 AND #2 –- Joyce 1100

Here's one of the super hard-to-find Joyce LPs. It was recorded 11/25/52 at the Rustic Cavern, Englewood Cliffs, NJ. Great stuff with MF, and very, very hard to find!
COPY #1. Just in, this is the first copy of this LP I've had in a couple of years. They're very, very hard to come by. The cover on this one is relatively clean and nice, but there are a few tiny disturbances on the front cover, reducing it from NMINT to NMINT-. The vinyl looks like it might have been played once. It's NMINT+. Overall, this copy is NMINT. It's yours for $25.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one shows just a bit of surface wear, front and back. It also has three small depressions at upper right where someone tried to punch holes in the cover, but instead just made small, circular dents. Nevertheless, this detracts from an otherwise very nice cover, so it's only in EX condition. The vinyl appears to be MINT, NEVER PLAYED. Due to those attempted hole punches, this copy is just $18.00.

STAN KENTON CONCERT IN MINIATURE ENCORES, JANUARY 18, 1953, HOLLYWOOD PALLADIUM –- Joyce Record Club JRC-1205

This is without a doubt one of the rarest Kenton albums ever pressed. It's the most rare of all the Joyce LPs I've encountered. It has the Kenton Orchestra recorded live at the Hollywood Palladium on 1/18/53. Although MF is not mentioned on the cover, all the major collectors agree that he's on this recording, and there's discographical information supporting it. Plus, you can definitely hear him! It's a wonderful, live recording of the Kenton orchestra, and this LP is in very, very few MF collections!!!
COPY #1. This copy is MINT, FACTORY SEALED!!! Superb!!! Yours for $35.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one looks like it just came out of shrink wrap. NMINT to NMINT+. The vinyl appears to be MINT, never played, but to be conservative, let's call it NMINT++. Overall, this copy is NMINT+. It's $30.00.
COPY #3. This one is opened but still in the original shrink wrap. The cover is MINT. The vinyl might has been played once -- it's pristine, NMINT++. This copy is NMINT++. It's $32.00.
COPY #4. Both the cover and vinyl on this one are MINT!!! Yours for $34.00.
COPY #5. This is a MINT copy, but there is one tiny little brown spot on the lower seam of the cover, about the size of a grain of rice. So I'm going to call this near-perfect copy NMINT+++. It's $33.00.

STAN KENTON, ONE NIGHT STAND WITH STAN KENTON AND MUSIC '55 –- Joyce LP-1130

Most of this LP is a live performance of Stan with Ella Fitzgerald, plus Haogy Carmichael & The Tigertown 5, from 1955. But the last 15 minutes of the LP are taken from a Palladium concert in January, 1953, and include MF. Those tracks are Theme and Introduction, Southern Scandal, Easy to Love, Bags, Adios, and Theme and Signoff. A very, very hard LP to find!

STAN KENTON, CITY OF GLASS AND THIS MODERN WORLD –- Creative World ST-1006

This is without a doubt one of the finest examples of the Stan Kenton Orchestra in a progressive jazz format. The composer, Robert Graettinger, was a genius! This 12" LP version on the Creative World label is a re-issue of the original Capitol W736 LP, and it dates to the late '60s, early '70s. This is a very popular record with jazz collectors! NMINT copies of this LP sell in the $25.00 to $30.00 range.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, SKETCHES ON STANDARDS –- Capitol T426

Stan Kenton entered the Capitol Recording Studios on 1/28 and 1/30/53 to knock out a great album of standard hits. This LP version was released in 1955. MF was, of course, included in these sessions. The result was one of the most listenable of the Kenton recordings. Tunes include Sophisticated Lady, Begin the Beguine, Pennies from Heaven, Over the Rainbow, etc.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, SKETCHES ON STANDARDS –- Creative World ST-1041

Stan Kenton entered the Capitol Recording Studios on 1/28 and 1/30/53 to knock out a great album of standard hits. MF was, of course, included in these sessions. The result was one of the most listenable of the Kenton recordings. Tunes include Sophisticated Lady, Begin the Beguine, Pennies from Heaven, Over the Rainbow, etc. This is the re-issue LP version, released in the early '70s.
COPY #1. The cover on this one is yellow and brown. Here's the first copy of this LP that I've had in some time. The cover on this one shows just a little bit of wear in a couple of places. It's NMINT. The vinyl has one extrmely small and light paper scuff, but frankly, I don't think this disc has ever been played. It's NMINT, tending to NMINT+. Ovearll, this copy is NMINT. $15.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one is the beige portrait cover. It looks like it wasn't manufactured properly. There's a little squiggly impression on the front corner at lower left that looks like it might have had the front paper applied wrong. The back paper has some bubbles underneath where it wasn't fastened properly. Don't get me wrong. It's a clean and nice cover, and would otherwise easily rate a NMINT, but with this little manufacturing defects, it's maybe EX+. The vinyl looks like it might be never-played, but it was mishandled, and there are a few light surface scratches. Let's call it EX+, as well. So here's a solid, but somewhat damaged copy, in EX+ condition. Just $5.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, PORTRAITS ON STANDARDS –- Capitol T462

Between 9/51 and 5/54, Stan Kenton’s orchestra recorded a number of favorite tunes which found their way onto the 1955 release Portraits on Standards. MF played on the tracks "Street of Dreams" (9/20/51), "The Lady in Red" (3/31/54), and "Under a Blanket of Blue" (5/6/54).

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, PORTRAITS ON STANDARDS –- Creative World ST 1042

Between 9/51 and 5/54, Stan Kenton’s orchestra recorded a number of favorite tunes which found their way onto the 1955 release Portraits on Standards. MF played on the tracks "Street of Dreams" (9/20/51), "The Lady in Red" (3/31/54), and "Under a Blanket of Blue" (5/6/54). This Creative World version dates to the 1970s.
COPY #1. This one has a brown and yellow cover. The cover shows quite a bit of record ring wear, mainly on the front, and some seam wear on the tip of the bottom right corner. I'd rate the cover as EX- to EX. The vinyl is a relatively clean and nice NMINT. Overall, let's call this one EX+. It's $5.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, PORTRAITS ON STANDARDS (GERMAN RELEASE) –- Telefunken Capitol T462

This German version has similar cover graphics to the U.S. version, but the opening slit it at top and the cover is coated nicely with laminate. A nice variety for the U.S. collectors.
COPY #1. Just in, this is the first German pressing of this LP I've had for sale. The cover on this one has clean and nice front paper, but the seams are delaminating on each side. The could easily be repaired. Otherwise, this is a clean and nice cover, and it rates an EX. The vinyl has a lot of light surface scratches. It plays OK, but with some definite background noise. I'd rate it as VG- to VG -- on the lower end of average. Overall, this copy is VG+. Yours for $9.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, PORTRAITS ON STANDARDS (JAPANESE RELEASE) –- Capitol ECJ-40031

This Japanese version, which I'm guessing dates to about 1980, has similar cover graphics to the U.S. version, but it's nice variety for the U.S. collectors, and the vinyl is far superior to the original U.S. pressing.
COPY #1. Just in, this is the first Japanese pressing of this LP I've had for sale. The cover on this one is in super condition, and looks almost MINT. I'll call it NMINT++ to be on the conservative side. It contains the Japanese liner note insert, as well. The vinyl looks like it's never been played -- NMINT++. Overall, this copy is NMINT++. Yours for $18.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, COLLECTOR'S CHOICE -- Creative World ST 1027

This is a super popular album with collectors. MF plays on most of the 10 tracks. What makes this so collectible is his solo effort on What's New! He just flat out BLOWS THE ROOF OFF of Capitol Studios, Los Angeles, on this track. He also solos on Viva Prado.
COPY #1. This has the yellow and brown cover. The cover on this one shows the typical record ring wear both on the front and back, but it isn't too bad -- still an EX+ cover. The vinyl looks like it may have been played once or twice, but not more -- NMINT. Overall, this one is NMINT-. $10.00.
COPY #2. This has the beige portrait cover. Due to the desirability, and the fact that this is MINT, FACTORY SEALED!!!!!!!!!!!! ... this copy is $20.00.
COPY #3. This has the yellow and brown cover. The cover on this one is near-perfect. The only problem is 1" mark from a blue pen on the back cover (must have just accidentally marked on the cover). Otherwise, the cover looks like it just came out of the original shrink wrap. It's NMINT. The vinyl is likewise NMINT. Overall, this copy is a nice, clean NMINT. Yours for $15.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, POPULAR FAVORITES BY STAN KENTON -- Capitol T-421

This is an original Capitol LP from the mid-50s. Maynard can be heard on 7 of the 12 tracks: September Song (3/20/51), Dynaflow (3/28/51), Laura (5/28/51), Jump for Joe (5/31/51), Francesca (6/29/51), Taboo (9/11/52), Harlem Nocturne (1/22/53). The title is precisely correct -- these are definitely the most popular tunes done by the Kenton band during Maynard's tenure in the early 1950s.
COPY #1. Interestingly, I think this is the first copy of this LP I've ever had for sale. It's not rare, but apparently I've just never had one before. The cover on this copy has some ring and surface wear, front and back. The seams and tight, but a little rubbed in a couple of places. Overall, it's a nice, solid copy -- EX+. The vinyl has several very light scratches. I played one track where I could see several, and it played fine, with just a bit of surface noise persent in the softer passages. It's EX. Overall, this copy is EX to EX+. Just $8.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, POPULAR FAVORITES BY STAN KENTON (GERMAN RELEASE) -- Telefunken Capitol T-421

This German pressing is similar to the U.S. version, but it has the opening slit at top, and the cover is laminated all-over, unlike the U.S. version. A nice variety for the U.S. collector.
COPY #1. The cover on this one is relatively clean and nice, with no major issues. It's NMINT-. The vinyl has numerous light surface scratches. It plays OK, but with definite background noise. It's VG, at best. Overall, this copy is EX-. It's yours for $9.00.

COPY #1. The cover is excellent, except for a 1" split in the top seam, at the left edge and an owner's name nicely rubber-stamped on the back. Still, it's EX. The vinyl is NMINT-. Overall, this album is EX+. $6.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, STAN KENTON'S GREATEST HITS -- Capitol N-16182 (MONO)

This compilation album of many of Stan Kenton's great tunes includes MF on Laura, recorded 5/28/51 (Capitol Recording Session No. 2176). For some reason, the track September Song was left off this particular version of this album.
COPY #1. The cover is excellent, with just the faintest hint of record ring wear -- NMINT-. The vinyl is possibly never played -- NMINT+. Overall, this album is NMINT. $7.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, STAN KENTON'S GREATEST HITS -- Music for Pleasure MFP 5607

This is the UK release of the Greatest Hits LP. Unlike the U.S. version, it has a RED cover, and a different cover photo. Like the U.S. version, it contains the tracks September Song and Laura which have MF on them. Very, very hard to find here in the U.S.
COPY #1. This copy is in FACTORY SEALED, MINT condition!!!!!! $15.00.
COPY #2. This copy is in FACTORY SEALED, MINT condition!!!!!! $15.00.
COPY #3. This copy is in FACTORY SEALED, MINT condition!!!!!! $15.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, A CONCERT IN PROGRESSIVE JAZZ, Creative World ST 1037

This is a compilation album of Stan Kenton tunes from 9/24/47 - 9/20/51. MF plays on two tracks: Theme for Alto (3/20/51) and Come Rain or Come Shine (9/20/51). No solos for MF here, but a very collectible, hard-to-find LP on this Creative World label.
COPY #1. This one has a yellow and brown cover. The cover on this one is a super clean and nice NMINT+! The vinyl is MINT, NEVER PLAYED. Stunning. It's $16.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, ONE NIGHT STAND WITH STAN KENTON BACK AT THE STEEL PIER, Joyce 1113

This is a relatively rare Joyce pressing of Maynard with the Stan Kenton Orchestra. Maynard is featured, soloing, on the front cover! It was recorded at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in July, 1951. Tracks include Love for Sale, I Only Have Eyes for You, Where or When, Artistry in Tango, Lover, September Song, Interlude, Lullaby in Rhythm, Laura, Artistry in Percussion, Nice Work if You Can Get It, Don't Worry 'Bout Me, Jolly Rogers, and Theme and Signoff. Maynard wails throughout! This is an absolute MUST in every serious MF collection.
COPY #1. This is the first copy of this relatively rare LP that I've had in stock in several years. And good news. It's MINT, FACTORY SEALED!!! It's yours for $25.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, ONE NIGHT STAND WITH STAN KENTON AT CARNEGIE HALL, Joyce 1080

This is a relatively rare Joyce pressing of Maynard with the Stan Kenton Orchestra. It was recorded 10/19/51, live at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Tracks include Spirals, Ennui, Sambo, Shelly Manne, Conte Candoli (Round Robin), Art Pepper, Improvisation, John Graas, Maynard Ferguson (YES!!!!!), Samana, and Love for Sale. This is an absolute MUST in every serious MF collection.
COPY #1. The cover on this copy is a beautiful, NMINT, but it does have the core hole at upper right that's been on every copy I've seen. This reduces the cover to just EX+. The vinyl is super -- NMINT to NMINT+. Overall, this copy is NMINT-. $18.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one is very, very clean, but it does have the typical core hole at upper right. This reduces the cover from NMINT to just EX+. The vinyl is super -- NMINT to NMINT+. Overall, this copy is NMINT-. $18.00.
COPY #3. The cover on this one has a hole punch at upper right (a cut-out item). There's also a bit of toning around the edges, and a minor corner bend at lower right. I'd rate this cover as VG -- just average. The vinyl is a seldom-played NMINT+. Overall, let's call this one EX to EX+. It's yours for just $12.00.
COPY #4. The cover on this copy has just a hint of toning around the edges, and would rate a NMINT- to NMINT rating. But it's got a hole punch at upper right (a cut-out item). This reduces an otherwise nice cover to just EX-. The vinyl is a seldom-played NMINT to NMINT+. Overall, let's call this one EX++. It's $15.00.
COPY #5. The cover on this one is FACTORY SEALED, but there is a core hole at upper right. The disc is, of course, MINT. Due to the core hole, this copy is just $15.00.
COPY #6. The cover on this one has some light brownish toning around the edges in places and a core hole (a cut-out item) at upper right. This reduces it to just VG. The vinyl is super clean and looks to have been played just once. It's NMINT+. Overall, this one is in the EX to EX+ range. It's $12.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, NEW CONCEPTS OF ARTISTRY IN RHYTHM -- Capitol T-383

MF plays on all tracks, and is especially fantastic on Invention for Guitar and Trumpet, which was written by Bill Holman especially for Sal Salvador and Maynard. Kenton is smoking a cigarette on the cover, so I predict this will be a real collectible some day. This LP version includes Kenton's "Prologue (This is an Orchestra!)", which was not included on the 10" or EP version. MF blows his brains out on this!!!
COPY #1. The cover on this copy has quite a bit of surface wear on the front and some brownish toning on the back. But the seams an spine are totally solid. It's in EX- condition. The vinyl is definitely NMINT. Really a super nice copy, in overall EX+ condition. $9.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, NEW CONCEPTS OF ARTISTRY IN RHYTHM -- Creative World ST-1002

MF plays on all tracks, and is especially fantastic on Invention for Guitar and Trumpet, which was written by Bill Holman especially for Sal Salvador and Maynard. This LP version includes Kenton's "Prologue (This is an Orchestra!)", which was not included on the Capitol 10" or EP version. MF blows his brains out on this!!! Note that this is the Creative World re-issue, released in the '70s. My experience is that this is a much rarer record than the original.
COPY #1. This one has a yellow and brown cover. This copy has a really nice cover, with the only flaws being a slight fading of the spine and some record ring wear. I'd still rate the cover as EX+. The vinyl is pristine -- NMINT. Overall, this copy is NMINT-. $13.00.
COPY #2. This one has a yellow and brown cover. The cover on this one shows just a bit of record ring wear, but it's still EX++ -- a very nice copy. The vinyl is pristine -- I don't think it's ever been played. I'm going to go out on a limb here and call it MINT. Overall, this copy is NMINT- to NMINT. $14.00.
COPY #3. This one has a beige Kenton portrait cover. It's pretty nice, except there's a quarter-sized discoloration at upper right where a price sticker was removed, a 1.5" seam split at upper right, and a 1" spine crack at bottom center. Let's be conservative and call it EX-, although it looks EX+. The disc is a pristine NMINT+!!! Overall, this copy is EX++. $10.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, NEW CONCEPTS OF ARTISTRY IN RHYTHM (JAPANESE RELEASE) -- Capitol ECJ-70159

This is a fantastic Japanese pressing which I'm guessing dates to the 1970s or 80s. My experience is that this is a MUCH RARER record than the original.
COPY #1. This one has a clean and nice cover with just a bit of wear and toning in places. It's still NMINT-. The vinyl is a seldom-played NMINT+. Overall, this copy is NMINT. Due to its relative rarity, it's $22.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, CONCERT ENCORES (UK RELEASE) -- First Heard FH-40

Here's MF on a rare import LP with the Kenton Orchestra on two dates, 1/18 and 1/22/53, both from the Hollywood Palladium. This is the rarest of the three First Heard LPs. I seldom see a copy of this one! A MUST for every serious MF collection.
COPY #1. The cover on this one is super clean and nice, with the only problem being a minor corner bend at upper right. Still, it's easily NMINT. The vinyl appears to have been played just once per side. It's NMINT+. Overall, this copy is NMINT to NMINT+ -- just a super copy of a relatively rare LP. It's $25.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one has some definite issues. There's a small rectangular discoloration at upper right where a price sticker was removed, a corner bend at lower left, and a little seam and spine roughness in places. On the back there's a factory sticker stating "IT HAS BEEN DECIDED TO MAKE FIRST HEARD RECORDS AVAILABLE TO STRICTLY ACCREDITED RETAILERS AND PUBLIC LIBRARY SUPPLIERS." The sticker covers up some of the text. Due to all these issues, it's only a VG cover. The vinyl on the other hand looks to have been played maybe once. It's easily NMINT to NMINT+. Overall, this one is EX. Priced accordingly at $13.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, BY REQUEST, VOLUME II -- Creative World ST 1040

COPY #3. This one has the beige Kenton portrait cover. The cover on this one is still in the original shrink wrap, and it's NMINT++! The vinyl is MINT, NEVER PLAYED. $17.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, KENTON IN HI-FI -- Capitol W724

This is the mono version of the 1956 Stan Kenton LP which featured MF on lead trumpet. Kenton cut this album to lay down his most popular tracks from the 40s and early 50s in hi-fidelity. Although MF had left the band several years earlier, he was invited back especially for this Los Angeles-based recording session. It's SENSATIONAL!!!
COPY #1 -- This copy is just VG. It has a spine split about 4" long at upper right, and has the word "BONUS" neatly perforated into the lower left corner of the cover. (It must have been a record club give-away.) Just $3.00.
COPY #2 -- The cover on this one is really nice looking, except for a 2” seam split at bottom center and the fact that the top seam has been repaired with clear tape. The vinyl is just “GOOD” -- below average. Overall, let’s call this copy GOOD+. Just $2.00.
COPY #3 -- The cover on this one is EX- due to some wear and the fact that the top seam has been repaired with clear tape. The vinyl is only VG-, however. Overall, it’s an average copy -- VG. Just $2.00.
COPY #4 -- The cover on this one is really nice, with just the faintest hint of surface wear -- NMINT-. The vinyl is likewise very nice -- NMINT-. Overall, this is a nice, clean copy -- NMINT-. $11.00.
COPY #5 -- The cover on this one shows just the faintest hint of wear and there's a seam split at upper right. Still, it's an EX to EX+ copy. The vinyl EX to EX+. Overall, this copy is EX to EX+. 7.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, KENTON IN HI-FI -- Capitol SW724

This is the stereo version of the 1956 Kenton session.
COPY #1. The cover is EX, but the vinyl is only VG. Overall, it's VG+. $4.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, KENTON IN HI-FI (JAPANESE RELEASE) -- Capitol ECJ-60018

This is the first copy of the Japanese pressing of this LP that I've ever had to sell on the website. It's in stereo, and I believe it dates to about 1980. The vinyl on this Japanese version is absolutely outstanding.
COPY #1. The cover on this copy looks almost new. It's NMINT+. The vinyl looks to be MINT, NEVER PLAYED. Overall, let's call this one NMINT++. It's well worth the asking price of $18.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, KENTON IN HI-FI (UK Release) -- Capitol LCT 6109

This is the mono original English pressing of the 1956 Kenton session.
COPY #1. The cover on this copy is a relatively clean and nice NMINT-. The vinyl has a number of light surface scratches that do cause a bit of background noise on playback. It's VG to VG+. Overall, let's call this copy EX. It's yours for $9.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, KENTON IN STEREO -- Creative World ST-1004

This is the early '70s reissue, on the Creative World Label, of the 1956 Kenton in Hi-Fi album. Probably 10 times harder to find on Creative World than on Capitol.
COPY #1. This one has a yellow and brown cover. The cover shows some record ring wear both front and back, and the spine is a bit faded. Still, the cover is EX overall. The vinyl, on the other hand, is outstanding -- NMINT. Overall, the condition is EX++. $10.00.
COPY #2. This one has a beige Kenton portrait cover. The front cover on this one shows some signs of record ring wear. This reduces a NMINT cover to just EX+. The vinyl is NMINT-. Overall, this one is EX+ to NMINT-. $10.00.
