L.A. Jazz Institute CDs with Maynard Ferguson

L.A. JAZZ INSTITUTE PRESENTS MODERN JAZZ A LA LIGHTHOUSE, FEATURING HOWARD RUMSEY'S LIGHTHOUSE ALL-STARS -- Lighthouse LAJI001

In 2003, the Los Angeles Jazz Institute (the same folks who brought us the Maynard Ferguson Stratospheric weekend in October, 2004) issued a limited edition CD of 12 never-before-released tracks of Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars. These were given out only to the members of the institute, as a membership incentive. Only 300 copies were pressed, and each is individually hand numbered and autographed by Howard Rumsey. Track number 5 is the tune What's New, and features none other than Maynard Ferguson soloing with the All-Stars on this signature tune. The recording was made on Sunday, May 31, 1953, and this is the first, and possibly the last, time that it has ever been released. Talk about RARE!!! With only 300 copies of this disc available, it's surely one of the rarest CDs in existence with MF, and with this never-before-released tune, it's going to be an instant rarity with the MF collectors.
COPY #1. This is limited edition copy #182 of 300. It's in like-new, MINT condition. However, the disc came from the factory with some unplayable tracks. This happened to a number of copies of LAJI001. The Jazz Institute did not have any replacement copies at the late date when I found this CD. So I have included a good copy of the disc (made from my own collection copy) and discounted the price on this one. Normally it would be $80.00. It's just $40.00. (NOTE: On 5/1/21 a perfect copy sold in eBay for $225 plus $4 shipping plus tax.)

L.A. JAZZ INSTITUTE PRESENTS WEST COAST RARITIES -- Lighthouse LAJI002

In 2004, the Los Angeles Jazz Institute issued their second limited edition CD for members only, this time with 9 never-before-released tracks from their archives. Presumably, just like their first CD, this one was issued in a quantity of 300, as well, although this second one is not hand-numbered, and is not autographed by Rumsey or any of the other stars featured on this disc. Track number 7 is the tune Everybody Moan, by Maynard and his West Coast Dreamband, recorded live at Peacock Lane in Hollywood on 1/4/57. This is the first, and possibly the last, time that it has ever been released. It's ultra RARE!!! With presumably only 300 copies of this disc available, it's an absolute rarity, and needed in every significant MF collection.
SORRY! NO COPIES AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.

L.A. JAZZ INSTITUTE PRESENTS WEST COAST BIG BAND RARITIES -- Lighthouse LAJI003

In 2005, the Los Angeles Jazz Institute issued their third limited edition CD for members only, this time with 11 never-before-released tracks from their archives. Presumably, just like their first CD, this one was issued in a quantity of 300, as well, although this third one is not hand-numbered, and is not autographed by Rumsey or any of the other stars featured on this disc. Track number 2 is the tune Salute, arranged by Pete Rugolo, and played by the Stan Kenton Innovations in Modern Music Orchestra at their Preview Concert, recorded live at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Auditorium on 1/30/50. The young Maynard had only been in the band DAYS when this was recorded! Then, track 9 features June Christy and the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra on Blue Birdland and The Glory of Love, recorded live at the Tropicana Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada, date unknown. WOW! Rare, rare stuff, never before released, and probably never to be released again! With presumably only 300 copies of this disc available, it's an absolute rarity, and needed in every significant MF collection.

L.A. JAZZ INSTITUTE PRESENTS AN EXPRESSION FROM ROGERS: THE RARE AND UNISSUED SHORTY ROGERS -- Lighthouse LAJI004

In 2006, the Los Angeles Jazz Institute issued their fourth limited edition CD for members only. It included tracks from various Shorty Rogers concerts recorded between August 9, 1947 and November 23, 1957. Presumably, just like their first CD, this one was issued in a quantity of 300, as well, although this fourth one is not hand-numbered, and is not autographed by any of the musicians featured on this disc. Regardless, it's rare. This previously unreleased material includes MF on the tracks Take the 'A' Train, Solo for Art, and Sweetheart of Sigmund Freud. With presumably only 300 copies of this disc available, it's an absolute rarity, and is needed in every significant MF collection.

L.A. JAZZ INSTITUTE PRESENTS STAN KENTON'S ARTISTRY IN COMEDY -- Lighthouse LAJI005

In 2007, the Los Angeles Jazz Institute issued their fifth limited edition CD for members only. It included 24 tracks from various Stan Kenton concerts recorded between November 7, 1948 and September 29, 1962. Presumably, just like their first CD, this one was issued in a quantity of 300, as well, although this fifth one is not hand-numbered, and is not autographed by any of the musicians featured on this disc. Regardless, it's rare. This previously unreleased material includes MF on seven of the 24 tracks. With presumably only 300 copies of this disc available, it's an absolute rarity, and is needed in every significant MF collection.

L.A. JAZZ INSTITUTE PRESENTS HOWARD RUMSEY'S LIGHTHOUSE ALL-STARS: LIVE IN THE SOLO SPOTLIGHT -- Lighthouse LAJI0011

Here's the Los Angeles Jazz Institute limited edition CD for members only, year #11. It includes 9 tracks from various sessions at the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, California between 1951 and 1954. Presumably, just like their first CD, this one was issued in a quantity of 300, as well, although this one is not hand-numbered, and is not autographed by any of the musicians featured on this disc. Regardless, it's rare. This previously unreleased material includes MF featured on the track Blue Moon, from sometime in 1952 (the precise date is apparently unknown). It's just Maynard and the rhythm section, and I don't believe this track has ever been published before, or since. Truly an amazing find. With presumably only 300 copies of this disc available, it's an absolute rarity, and is needed in every significant MF collection.
