MAJOR COLLECTOR SALE #1 -- THIS SALE CLOSED 7/29/05

ITEM #41 - MAYNARD FERGUSON, THE BIG HORN -- EmArcy EP-1-6039

Here's one of Maynard's rarest little 7" picture cover EmArcy EPs. This one dates to the mid '50s, and it's very, very hard to find in nice condition. The cover on this copy has an absolutely pristine front paper! It's virtually flawless. There's a 3" spine split at upper right, and a 1" spine split at lower right - extremely common for this cover. On the back, there's virtually none of the usual brownish toning - just maybe a hint on the very edges. Also, someone removed a price sticker on the back and left a little damage - a spot about 1.5" wide by 0.25" tall. Dealers would rate this cover NMINT-, but I'll be conservative and call it EX+. It's one of the cleanest and nicest ones I've seen, even with the minor damage. The vinyl has two very light surface scratches which don't affect play, and one scuff. The labels are clean and nice. I'd rate the vinyl as EX+ to NMINT-. Overall, this copy is in the EX+ to EX++ range. One of the nicest I've seen. $75.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #42 - MAYNARD FERGUSON, JAM SESSION VOL. 1 -- EmArcy EP-1-6109

This is the MF 7" picture cover EP from the mid '50s which has the track Our Love Is Here to Stay from the Jam Session LP. The cover on this one has been Scotch taped at upper right and lower right to correct spine splits. Other than this one problem, it's a super clean and nice EP. The front paper is nearly flawless - really pristine. The back has just the faintest hint of the brownish toning that usually is very bad on these EPs. It's truly a GREAT backing. Due to the tape, which is really the only problem, let's call it EX+. The vinyl has a few light scuffs and scratches on side A. Side B is nearly flawless. I'd rate the vinyl as EX. Overall, let's give this one an EX to EX+ -- a nice, well-above-average copy. $30.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #43 - GARY CROSBY, GOT MY EYES ON YOU / MAMBO IN THE MOONLIGHT -- Decca 9-29272

OK, folks. This one blew my mind when I saw it. I had never heard about Maynard being on this disc before. Our collector friend, however, has done his homework. According to the book "The Music of Billy May" by Jack Mirtle, the track "Got My Eyes on You" was recorded 8/23/54, features vocalist Gary Crosby, was led by Sonny Burke and His Orchestra, and includes the following instrumentalists: Pete Candoli, Conrad Gozzo, Maynard Ferguson, Milt Bernhart, and Bud Shank. (Note the proximity date-wise to the Dinah Jams recording, which was done on 8/14/54.) We listened to this disc together, and it sounds a lot like some of the Vido Musso R&B tracks from that same era. The band really swings! Since I'd never heard of this one before, and since there were two copies in the collection, I bought one from him directly, and this one goes to one of you lucky collectors! It's a pink-label Decca DJ copy. The label is near-perfect, with just a few ultra tiny little white spots in a couple of places. The vinyl is visually NMINT-, with just a couple of scuffs, and we played it so I can tell you that it sounds great - just a slight bit of background noise. Thus, a previously unknown (to me -- some of you no doubt knew about it), super little MF collectible, in NMINT- condition. $125.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #44 - VARIOUS ARTISTS, GREAT JAZZ SOLOS -- Skylark LP 17

Most of us have heard about Maynard recording a 10" LP on Skylark with Paul Nero, live at the Lighthouse, back in the early 1950s. It's called Jam Session. From time to time you see those on the market. But this is another Skylark LP, called Great Jazz Solos, and it's much rarer, in my experience. Track 1 is entitled Maynard Ferguson. What I couldn't believe when I first saw this copy is the condition. Skylark LPs are notoriously poorly made. The covers typically are falling apart, and the vinyl is typically badly scratched and ultra noisy. This copy, however, is in a very clean cover. There's just a little surface wear visible on the front, but it's minor. On the back, the wear shows a bit more, but it's still relatively minor. The top seam is split 5.5" at right; the bottom is split less than 1". (Most Skylark LPs I've seen are much worse!) The overall appearance is super clean and nice - especially compared to all the other copies I've seen. And, hold on to your hats - Maynard autographed this copy beautifully on the front cover. I'd rate this cover as EX++ -- probably the highest grading you'll see on one of these. The vinyl is unbelievable. I can't find a single spindle mark on the label, indicating that it may never have been played. There are a few ultra light marks on the surface from being handled over the years, but they're minimal. I refuse to play test it, because it's obvious it will play remarkably well, and I don't want to spoil the possibility of it being never-played. It's in NMINT++ condition - perhaps the finest copy extant!!!!! As you can imagine, a rare LP, in this ultra clean condition, with the autograph, is worth a bundle. Priced very reasonably at $255.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #45 - VARIOUS ARTISTS, JAZZ, JAZZ, JAZZ -- Columbia A2S 1476

Here's an extremely hard-to-find compilation LP from Columbia, dated 1982. This is only the second copy of this LP I've ever seen. They were a promo-only item, and are next-to-impossible to find today. It's a double gatefold LP, and contains MF on Portuguese Love from the Hollywood LP, along with numerous other Columbia artists. The covers are black, and I imagine most of the few extant copies will have major record ring wear. This one has virtually none. It's a super clean and nice NMINT. The vinyl, which has the expected white promo labels, looks never-played. Let's call it NMINT++ just to be on the safe side, but I'm pretty sure it's MINT. A rare and desirable double Columbia promo LP, in outstanding condition. $55.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #46 - STAN KENTON, ONE NIGHT STAND WITH STAN KENTON'S CONCERT IN MINIATURE NO. 9 AND 10 - Joyce LP 1087

This is a rare and desirable Kenton LP on the Joyce label from the 1970s, with Maynard appearing on all 12 tracks. It's never been played, although the collector did remove it from the shrink. It's pristine. The only problems are with the cover - a core hole at upper right, and a small blemish (smaller than a dime) on the back cover. It came from the factory that way. So the cover is EX+ (otherwise, it would have been MINT), and the vinyl is MINT. NMINT copies of this LP sell in the $75.00 range. Due to the core hole and blemish on the cover, this copy is just $45.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #47 - STAN KENTON, ONE NIGHT STAND WITH STAN KENTON BACK AT THE STEEL PIER, ATLANTIC CITY, N.J., JULY 1951 -- Joyce LP 1113

Here's one to die for! This one has Maynard pictured prominently on the front cover, in front of the band soloing in his plaid jacket. Gosh, he looks young! This one was removed from the shrink wrap, was autographed beautifully by MF on the front cover, and then placed on the collector's shelf. There's just the very slightest wear apparent on the cover due to storage, but it minimal. The cover is easily NMINT, tending to NMINT+. The vinyl is a pristine, never-played MINT!!! What a sterling copy!!! $75.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #48 -- MAYNARD FERGUSON, BOY WITH LOTS OF BRASS -- EmArcy MG 36114

Here's the ORIGINAL COVER version of this outstanding LP. It's the one with a photo of Maynard standing in a studio and holding his trombone under his left arm and his trumpet under his right arm. (I guess that constitutes "lots of brass".) The later "cartoon-like trumpet cover" version is relatively common, but these originals are getting harder and harder to find, and condition is usually not so hot. This copy, however, has a near perfect front cover (just a bit of surface wear visible), completely intact spines, and just a little wear visible on the back. It's definitely in the NMINT range. I can't see even a single spindle mark on the label, and the vinyl is absolutely PRISTINE! I'm betting it's never-played, but will call it NMINT++ just to be on the safe side. I guarantee you that dealers would call it MINT and never flinch, and for good reason. What a superb copy!!! These normally sell in the $50.00 range for a nice copy. This one is much better, and is really and truly a NMINT+ copy overall. But wait! There's more! You guessed it. Maynard autographed it very nicely on the front! What more could you ask? A beauty, and well worth the asking price of $75.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #49 -- MAYNARD FERGUSON, MAYNARD FERGUSON "CONDUCTS THE BIRDLAND DREAMBAND" VOL. 1 & 2 (FRENCH RELEASE) -- RCA Jazz Line PM 43841

This is the relatively rare French pressing of the Birdland Dreamband LP. It's a double gatefold LP, and this copy was removed from the shrink wrap by the collector, then autographed by Maynard, then put away and never played. He autographed it in silver ink against the dark blue cover background, and man, is it spectacular looking. The cover would be perfect but it looks like there was a sticker on it briefly (perhaps for cataloging purposes at one time). You really can't see it, but when you hold it in oblique lighting you can see just the faintest dullness in that one little spot. Otherwise, it's just an absolutely pristine cover, and it rates a NMINT+. The vinyl is MINT. It's pristine, never-played!!! Overall, this one is a pristine NMINT++, and with the beautiful autograph, it's unique. $85.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #50 - MAYNARD FERGUSON, IT'S MY TIME - Columbia JC 36766

Although not a rare LP, these often have heavy record ring wear. This one is really clean, with no visible ring wear. The only problem is just a tiny spot at upper right that in oblique light looks like there was a sticker removal. It's about the size of a dime in the very corner. Otherwise, this is a super cover. It's easily NMINT, and except for that tiny spot, would rate a NMINT+. Ultra clean! The vinyl appears never-played. It's lustrous, has no spindle marks on the label, and zero flaws of any kind. It's NMINT++, possibly MINT. Overall, this copy is NMINT+. And … it's beautifully autographed by MF on the front. How did our friend GET all these autographs? He says that he's taken grocery bags full for Maynard to sign, at times. Some nights, when things were a bit slow backstage, Maynard was very accommodating! I think Maynard would be very happy to know that these are going into such a diverse set of top-notch collections. Yours for $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #51 - MAYNARD FERGUSON, AUTUMN LEAVES / FINGER SNAPPIN' -- Mercury 70686X45

Hard to find, here's a sweet little MF Mercury 45 from the '50s. I seldom see a copy of this one! It's got clean and nice labels, and the vinyl is pretty nice, as well. There are several light scuffs, and a few ultra fine surface scratches. Expect a bit of background noise on playback. It's in the EX range. And … Maynard autographed the black label in silver ink. Our collector friend remembers that he and Maynard were having dinner one night, and he set a stack of 45s in front of Maynard, who proceeded to sign them all, including this one, during dinner. Talk about a nice gesture! So here's a hard-to-find, beautifully autographed little gem! $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #52 - DOIN' THE MADISON, PART 1 / PART 2 -- Roulette R-4250

This one is the DJ version of this relatively rare little Roulette 45. The label and vinyl are both ultra clean! It's NMINT+!!! A super copy. And ... you guessed it, it's autographed by MF in fine black marker on side B. You'll never find one nicer!!! $65.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #53 - EXCERPTS FROM BETHLEHEM'S NEW PRODUCTION OF GEORGE GERSHWIN'S "PORGY & BESS" -- Bethlehem EXLP-1-SP

Folks, you may have the CD. You may have the original 12" LP. You may have the re-issue 12" LP. You may even have the excerpts 12" LP. But I'm guessing you don't have the original 10" LP of the Bethlehem Porgy & Bess session with Russ Garcia, Frances Faye, Mel Torme, and, of course, MF! Well, here it is. It's only the second one I've ever seen. In my experience, it's ultra rare! Now the condition is nothing to brag about. If it were in really nice condition, it would rate a $100.00+ price. But this one has Scotch tape all along the top and left spines, as well as a lot of wear on the bottom spine. There are three stains, closely clustered, from price sticker removals. There's definite surface wear, front and back. So the cover isn't even average. It maybe rates a GD. The vinyl has white promo labels that are very clean and nice. The vinyl itself is also clean and nice, and would be pristine except for one long surface scuff. So the vinyl rates an EX+. Overall, let's call this one VG+. Due to the relatively poor cover, it's just $35.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #54 - BUD SHANK, BUD SHANK AND THREE TROMBONES -- Pacific Jazz Records PJLP-14

Have you heard this great little 10" LP? Just absolutely outstanding West Coast jazz from the early '50s. Your everyday, generic jazz collectors know it, too, so the price on these is usually pretty steep. Maynard was one of the "three trombones" on this LP, and his picture is featured on the back cover. The cover on this one is clean and nice, with tight seams all around. There's just a little edge and surface wear visible, so it's NMINT. The vinyl is super clean and nice, with beautiful labels, and no visible problems. It's NMINT to NMINT+. What a GREAT copy! And … Maynard autographed it in gold ink, which, on the black cover, is absolutely perfect! You've gotta have this one! $85.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #55 - MAYNARD FERGUSON, DIMENSIONS (+4) (JAPANESE RELEASE) -- Nippon Phonogram 195J-10103

Here's the rare Japanese pressing of the Dimensions LP. It has four bonus tracks that are not on the original EmArcy Dimensions LP - Roses All the Way, And So I Waited Around, Homing Pigeon, and Wow. (They were all released on 78s and 45s in the early '50s, but Nippon Phonogram added them to this Dimensions LP re-issue in the '80s.) Of course, these pressings are on pure virgin vinyl - the best available. This copy was removed from the original wrapper by the collector, signed by Maynard on the front, and then was returned to the collector's shelf. It still retains the original paper "obi" strip. The cover is a pristine NMINT++, and the vinyl is never-played - MINT!!! You couldn't find a nicer copy!!! Rare and highly desirable, this one is $150.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #56 - MAYNARD FERGUSON, INTERCHORDS - Columbia AS 1459

Here's the relatively rare 1982 Columbia interview LP with Maynard talking about various aspects of his career, as well playing on excerpts from several of his Columbia albums. The cover on this one would be perfect, but there's a small crease in the backing paper, visible only from the back, in one corner. It's really miniscule, however, and the cover is otherwise absolutely pristine. I'm going to call it NMINT to NMINT+, even with the minor problem. The vinyl is super clean and nice - NMINT+. Overall, this copy is NMINT+. Yep, it's autographed by MF, too, on the front, in black ink, near top right. What a super copy!!! Yours for $55.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #57 - MAYNARD FERGUSON, AROUND THE HORN WITH MAYNARD FERGUSON (JAPANESE RELEASE) - Nippon Phonogram 195J-56(M)

What a beauty this is!! It's the Japanese re-issue version of the original EmArcy Around the Horn LP. Pressed on pure virgin vinyl, you should hear these!!! I doubt you'd want to play this copy, however. It was removed from the shrink wrap by the collector, was autographed in white ink on the slate blue front cover, then returned to a record sleeve where it's remained all these years. Folks, this cover is as perfect as you'll EVER find!!! There's no doubt. It's MINT, and it even retains the original paper "obi" strip. The vinyl is likewise in never-played, MINT condition. So you've got a MINT cover, MINT vinyl, and a pristine autograph. A gem, priced at $75.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #58 - MJQ & MAYNARD FERGUSON, HOORAY FOR MODERN JAZZ QUARTET & MAYNARD FERGUSON SEXTET -- Session Disc 112

This is an obviously bootleg LP with some tracks by the MJQ and some by Maynard. There's a silhouette image on the front cover of a trumpet player, but it looks nothing like MF. Nevertheless, they're pretty rare, and thus collectors have a hard time finding them. The cover on this one has a small, slightly yellowish circle (about the size of a quarter) at upper left, two or three tiny brownish "foxing" marks, and a 6" spine split at upper right. I'd rate it EX. The vinyl is possibly never-played. It's ultra clean and nice - NMINT++. What's most interesting about this one is that Maynard normally refuses to sign these (at least that's what I've been told), but for our collector friend, he reluctantly agreed. He scribbled his autograph on the front. Frankly, it's not the best autograph you'll ever see, but the mere fact that he signed it is amazing in itself. Overall, a NMINT- copy, $65.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #59 -- MAYNARD FERGUSON, SCREAMIN' BLUES - Mainstream MRL 136

Here's the great Mainstream re-issue gatefold LP from the early '70s, with Maynard's photo reversed on the front cover so that it appears he's playing left-handed. This copy was removed from the shrink wrap by the collector, then autographed by Maynard on the front, then returned to his bookshelf. There's just a tiny bit of surface wear on the cover, but it's easily NMINT to NMINT+. The vinyl is, of course, MINT, never-played. So here we have a pristine, never-played copy, autographed by MF!!! $30.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #60 - MAYNARD FERGUSON, A MESSAGE FROM NEWPORT - Roulette SR-52012

This is the ORIGINAL STEREO LP on Roulette, not a re-issue. The cover is almost perfect. There's just one little dark spot at top center, and there's a tiny, dime-sized slightly yellowish spot on the back where a price sticker was removed. Still, it's a NMINT to NMINT+ cover. You seldom see Roulette LP covers, especially this 1958 version, this clean. The vinyl, which has the original pressing white with colored spokes label, appears never-played. It's PRISTINE, and rates a NMINT++!!! Come on folks, you just don't see early Roulette LPs this nice. But wait! Maynard autographed this one, too! Right on the front cover, in the light brown area. It really stands out. Normally selling in the $30.00 to $35.00 range, this pristine copy is $45.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #61 - MAYNARD FERGUSON, DOIN' THE MADISON, PART 1 / PART 2 -- Roulette R-4250

This one is the PROMOTIONAL COPY version of this relatively rare little Roulette 45. The label and vinyl are both ultra clean! It's NMINT+!!! A super copy. And ... you guessed it, it's autographed by MF in fine black marker on side B. You'll never find one nicer!!! $65.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #62 - MAYNARD FERGUSON, CHRISTMAS FOR MODERNS, PART I / PART II -- Roulette R-4317

Here's the relatively rare little 7" 45 of the wonderful Christmas for Moderns medley. This is the RADIO STATION COPY version. I believe it's only available here in this 45 format and on the Mosaic boxed set, so it's a hard one to find. The labels on this copy are super clean and nice, and the vinyl's NMINT- to NMINT. Just a beauty! And … it's autographed by MF on the B side in fine black marker. Superb! $65.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #63 - MAYNARD FERGUSON, YESTERDAYS / INDISCREET -- Roulette R-4084

Here's the rare 7" single of the two tracks which aren't available elsewhere -- even on the Mosaic boxed set. This is the DISK JOCKEY version of this disc. The labels show a bit of surface wear, and a rubber-stamped "Many Thanks / Stan Pat" is in tiny pink letters on the Indiscreet side of the disk. The vinyl is about the best I've seen. It's NMINT-. Overall, a very nice copy -- $135.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #64 - GEORGIE AULD AND HIS ORCHESTRA, MARGIE / YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE -- Mercury 70864X45

Here's one many of you don't know about. It's got Maynard blowing on these two tunes with the Georgie Auld Orchestra. It dates to the mid-'50s, and Maynard can be heard loud and clear! The labels are clean and nice, and the vinyl is NMINT-. Maynard signed it on the Margie side in silver marker against the black label, and it looks super! The only problem is that a few flakes of the silver marker ink (paint, really) have come off over the years and adhered to the vinyl. Just to be safe, the collector and I spun this one up the other night, and it played through flawlessly. Those paint flecks don't affect play at all. So here's a rare and beautifully autographed little 45 with MF -- $45.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #65 - GENE NORMAN PRESENTS BOB KEENE AND HIS ORCHESTRA, GNP VOL. 8 -- GNP-150

This is the original 10" LP of Maynard playing with the Bob Keene Orchestra. He's pictured prominently on the back cover. The cover is solid, with no splits or other damage. There's just a bit of surface wear and some spine wear, but overall, it's EX+. The vinyl is relatively nice, with clean, undamaged labels. There are some light surface scratches which cause a little background noise on playback, but no real problems. I'd rate the vinyl as EX- to EX. Overall, this is a nice, solid EX copy. $65.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #66 - CHARLIE BARNET AND HIS ORCHESTRA, DANCING PARTY - Verve MGV 2027

This LP contains much of the material recorded by MF in the mid-'50s with the Barnet Orchestra. Tunes include Blue Hound Bus Greys (clever!), Things Ain't What They Used to Be, Argo …, etc. The original ones said "Verve" on the label; the later re-issues said "MGM". This one is the original "Verve". The cover on this one looks almost new from the front, with the only visible problem being a minor bend to the upper right-hand corner. There's a bit of ring wear visible on the back. Overall, I'd rate the cover as NMINT-. The vinyl is NMINT. Overall, a great, NMINT- to NMINT copy! $80.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #67 - LOUIS BELLSON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, SKIN DEEP -- Norgran Records MGN-1046

Many of you have probably seen the now-out-of-print CD of this album, but few of you own the original LP, because it's very hard to find! Well, here it is. The front cover on this one looks almost like new. It's really splendid! The back is almost as nice, with just a bit of ring wear visible. The top spine had split at one time, and someone put a 2" piece of Scotch tape on it at upper right. Due to that piece of tape, I'm going to rate this cover as EX+, but it's closer to NMINT-. The vinyl is just absolutely lustrous. It looks like it's only been played once or twice! You just don't see this record in this condition! It's NMINT to NMINT+!!! Overall, this copy is easily NMINT-, tending toward NMINT. $65.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #68 - BUDDY BREGMAN, SWINGING KICKS -- Verve MGV-2042

Again, many of you have probably seen the now-out-of-print CD of this album, but few of you own the original LP. This is not exactly the original pressing - the original has "Verve" on the label, and this one has "MGM", but it's the early 1960s re-issue. The cover is almost perfect - there're just a few spots of brownish "foxing" on the back of the cover, but it's still easily NMINT. The vinyl is clean and shiny, with just a couple of very light scuffs. It's likewise NMINT. So, overall, here's a beautiful NMINT copy, in super condition. $50.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #69 - JIMMY DORSEY, ONE NIGHT STAND WITH JIMMY DORSEY, CAFÉ ROUGE, NEW YORK - Joyce LP-1048

Here's the hard-to-find Jimmy Dorsey disc with MF, recorded live on 3/28/49. Great stuff!!! The cover on this one is almost perfect - just a small amount of yellowing right on the edges. Still, it's NMINT - a solid, almost new cover. The vinyl is super clean and nice - perhaps only played once. It's NMINT+. Overall, this copy is NMINT to NMINT+. $40.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #70 - MAYNARD FERGUSON, M.F. HORN 4&5, LIVE AT JIMMY'S - Columbia KG 32732

Here's a very nice copy of this GREAT LP! The front cover shows a bit of the ever-present record ring wear. The back, however, shows almost none. Overall, it's NMINT-. The vinyl is NMINT to NMINT+ - super clean and nice. Overall, this copy is NMINT. And … it's beautifully autographed in black ink on the front by MF. A super copy, $45.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #71 - MAYNARD FERGUSON, MAYNARD - Columbia PC 36978

This copy was removed from the shrink wrap, autographed by MF on the front cover, then placed in a record sleeve for protection. It's MINT, never played, and beautifully autographed. SUPERB!!! $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #72 - MAYNARD FERGUSON, AROUND THE HORN 1955 -- Trip Jazz TLP-5558

Here's the Trip Jazz re-issue of the 1955 Around the Horn with Maynard Ferguson LP. This copy was removed from the shrink wrap, autographed by Maynard on the front, then placed in a record sleeve for safe-keeping. It's never-played, and is in immaculate condition. $30.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #73 - MAYNARD FERGUSON, THE BEST OF MAYNARD FERGUSON, THE WHOLE WORLD'S HIS STAGE -- Columbia AS 445

This is the rare Columbia promo-only, white label LP. It's a sort of "greatest hits" LP from 1978. The black covers on these were highly subject to record ring wear. I've seen 4 or 5, and all of them has ring wear - some minor, some major. This copy has some definite ring wear, but it's lighter than on most copies I've seen. Maynard autographed it in silver ink (paint, really) on the front, just above the MF Horn logo. A superb autograph! I'd rate this cover as NMINT-, with the only flaw being the ring wear. The vinyl is MINT - never played!!! Overall, this is a beautiful, NMINT copy of this rare and elusive LP, superbly autographed. $65.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #74 - COUNT BASIE & MAYNARD FERGUSON, BIG BAND SCENE '65 -- Roulette R 52117

Here's the MONO version of this great 1965 issue. Maynard's band takes up all of side two, and one of the tunes is the great, screaming Maria! The cover on this one is a clean and nice NMINT- to NMINT, with no significant flaws of any kind - just extremely minor bends on the very tips of three corners. The vinyl is super, as well, with just a few light scuffs visible. It's easily NMINT-. Overall, this copy is NMINT- to NMINT. But wait! Yes, it's carefully autographed on the front by Maynard in silver ink. Just a super copy! $30.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #75 - MAYNARD FERGUSON, DIMENSIONS 1955 -- Trip Jazz TLP-5507

This is the Trip Jazz re-issue of the original EmArcy Dimensions LP. It's got a black cover, and this one suffers from a bit of the typical record ring wear. Also, the backing paper got loose and wrinkled a bit before it was carefully re-glued to the cover. So I'd rate this cover as just EX -- very nice, but a bit short of NMINT. Maynard autographed this one on the front in silver ink against that black background, and it really looks great! The disc shows signs of having been played a few times, but it's still clean and nice with just a couple of visible scuffs. It's NMINT-. Overall, this copy is EX+. Just $20.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #76 - SHORTY ROGERS BIG BAND, SHORT SNORT - Straight Ahead Jazz SAJ-1002

I'm betting many of you have never heard of this LP. It's relatively rare. I'm not sure of the exact release date, but a guess would be about 1980. It's got Maynard with Shorty and the gang recorded on July 11, 1953 at the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa Beach, California. Tracks include Sometimes I'm Happy, How High the Moon, Short Snort, Take the Train, C Jam Blues, The Great Lie, and Buzzy. I collected MF records for years before I actually got a copy of this for my own collection - it's just very hard to find. The cover on this one is a clean and nice NMINT, tending to NMINT+. It's super. The vinyl looks never-played. It's NMINT++!! Overall, let's call this one NMINT+. Just a super clean and nice copy. $65.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #77 - STAN KENTON, ONE NIGHT STAND WITH STAN KENTON AT CARNEGIE HALL -- Joyce LP-1080

Here's Maynard performing with Stan the Man at Carnegie Hall on October 19, 1951. This LP contains a live performance of the tune "Maynard Ferguson," and of course, it's a screamer! The cover on this one has a faint wrinkle in the bottom left-hand corner, and there's a tiny dime-size spot on the back that just ever-so-slightly discolored from a sticker removal. Still, it's easily a NMINT cover. Maynard autographed it beautifully on the front! (Our collector REALLY knew how to get the best autographs I've ever seen from Maynard. This one is typical - clean and crisp, centered nicely on the front cover in black marker.) Our friend thought it was never played, but I think I can detect one very light spindle mark on the label on each side. I'm betting it was played precisely one time per side. So it's NMINT++. Overall, this copy is NMINT+, and with that nice autograph, it's $55.00.

ITEM #78 - STAN KENTON, ONE NIGHT STAND WITH STAN KENTON VOLUME 2 -- Joyce LP-1016

Here's Maynard with Stan and the guys recorded at the Steel Pier, Atlantic City, New Jersey, July, 1951. The cover on this one shows just a faint hint of record ring wear front and back. Otherwise, it's almost like new. It's easily NMINT. The vinyl has been played, but not often. It's got one or two very light scuffs, and still rates a NMINT. And of course, coming from this collection, it's autographed by MF on the front in black marker. Overall, this is a nice, solid NMINT copy. $50.00.

ITEM #79 - STAN KENTON & HIS ORCHESTRA, NINETEEN FIFTY-ONE (UK PRESSING) - First Heard FH-1004

Here's the hard-to-find Stan Kenton disc from the UK featuring MF with the 1951 orchestra, and soloing on Machito and Viva Prado. You just don't see these very often. The covers are very thin, and every copy I've seen has a bend here or there. This one is no exception, with a bit of creasing in the bottom left and bottom right corners. There's also a small splotch of bright silver ink (dime-sized) at top right. Since the cover is silver, it's almost imperceptible, and I have no idea where it came from - perhaps it came that way from the factory. Anyway, it's worth mentioning, although it very minor. The cover rates a NMINT-. The vinyl is super clean and shiny, with just a couple of very light surface scratches visible. They absolutely won't affect play. The disc is NMINT. Overall, this copy is NMINT- to NMINT. A super specimen, $45.00.

ITEM #80 - VARIOUS ARTISTS, THREE KENTON'S BE BOPPERS GROUPS 1947-50 - Unique Jazz UJ-36

A few years ago, some bright Italian guy got the idea to release an LP with Vido Musso, Maynard, and Eddie Safranski tunes on it, and he called it the grammatically incorrect title you see above. You'd think these guys would at least CONSULT someone who knows English well before putting something on an album cover. Unreal! Anyway, it's otherwise pretty nicely done, and has Maynard on some of his early tracks from 9/13/50: Short Wave, Take the 'A' Train, Love Locked Out, and The (sic) Band Ain't Draggin'. The cover on this one is clean and nice with the only problem worth mentioning being a dime-sized discoloration where a sticker was removed on the back cover. It's easily a clean and nice NMINT cover, tending toward NMINT+. The vinyl is never-played - MINT!! Overall, this copy is NMINT++ -- just a super copy. And, like most everything else, it's autographed nicely by MF on the front in black marker, which looks great against the red cover. What surprises me is that our collector friend was able to get that autograph on this obviously bootleg LP. Maynard usually "passes" on signing them, or at least complains about it. But here it is, proof that once again our friend was persuasive with The Boss. Yours for $85.00.
