MAJOR COLLECTOR SALE #1 -- THIS SALE CLOSED 7/29/05

ITEM #161 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, ALIVE AND WELL IN LONDON -- CBS 64432

Most of you know that the 1971 Columbia C31117 disc entitled Maynard Ferguson was also released in England with a modified cover and the title "Alive and Well in London." Likewise, it has a different label (CBS) and catalog number. It's probably 20 times rarer than the U.S. version, and very, very hard to find. This one has a near-perfect cover -- just a couple of tiny creases, visible only on the back of the thin English cover. It's NMINT+ (no ring wear, no spine problems -- just immaculate). The vinyl is never played -- MINT condition. Our collector friend indicates that he took this one out of the shrink wrap, had Maynard autograph it nicely on the front, and returned it to a clean new record sleeve. It shows! Yours for $75.00.

ITEM #162 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, CHRIS CONNOR, TWO'S COMPANY – Roulette SR-52068

Here’s an interesting LP. It's not the original pressing, but rather a second or third pressing. It's in a MONO type cover (says R 52068 on it), but there's a STEREO sticker on the front of the jacket at top right, and indeed, the disc is STEREO. Looks like they ran out of STEREO covers so improvised at the factory by placing STEREO stickers on MONO covers. I've never seen one like this before. The cover itself is clean and nice NMINT to NMINT+. The vinyl is never-played, but it does have two tiny surface scratches where it was apparently laid down on something once. Still, it's NMINT. Overall, this copy is easily NMINT, tending to NMINT+. AND … it's beautifully autographed by MF on the front. Yours for $30.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #163 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, A MESSAGE FROM NEWPORT -- Roulette SR-52012

Here's an original MF Message from Newport LP in STEREO. It's got a super nice cover. The only problem is some definite roughness on the left edge. I'd rate it as NMINT-. The vinyl is the original pressing, and is in never-played, MINT condition. Overall, this copy is NMINT to NMINT+. A super copy priced at $32.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #164 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, MAYNARD '61 -- Roulette R 52064

This is the original Maynard '61 MONO LP on Roulette. It's got a pretty nice cover, with just a little surface wear visible front and back. It's NMINT-. The vinyl is likewise clean and nice, with just a few very light scuffs and a couple of light surface scratches that don't affect play. It's NMINT-. Overall, a super, NMINT- copy. Yours for $28.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #165 – MAYNARD FERGUSON,THE NEW SOUNDS OF MAYNARD FERGUSON -- Cameo C-1046

First of all, have a look back at lot #132, the STEREO version of this LP. Great story about Maynard signing his name instead of the dog's name, right? Well, here's the MONO version, and he got this one right! On the left side of the cover, he autographed it "Maynard Ferguson." On the right side, under the dog, he wrote "Rasheed." So … a great mystery is solved! We now know the name of the Great Dane! And it's in Maynard's handwriting! The cover on this one is clean and nice -- easily NMINT, tending to NMINT+. The vinyl is in pristine, never-played, MINT condition!!!! You're just not going to find one nicer than this, and definitely you won't find another one with the "dog's autograph!" Yours for $45.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #166 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, NEW VINTAGE – Columbia JC 34971

Here’s MF on one of his most popular LPs. The cover on this one, unlike most, has virtually no record ring wear … just a little dullness present in oblique lighting. There are two or three very minor edge creases. Still, I'm being very picky. It's definitely a NMINT cover. And the vinyl has perhaps been played once per side. It's an ultra clean and nice NMINT+. Overall, this copy is NMINT to NMINT+. And, of course, it's been autographed by Maynard in black marker over the silver-white ice cubes. It looks great! Yours for $20.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #167 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, NEWPORT SUITE – Roulette SR 52047

Here's the original Newport Suite STEREO LP on Roulette. It's got some surface wear visible front and back, as well as a nearly 1" square place on the back where the backing paper was removed due to a price sticker. There are two little dots of red ink on the front, near the right edge (bumped with an ink pen, no doubt). I'd rate this cover as EX- -- above average, but with some definite flaws. The vinyl, on the other hand, is just superb. There's a pretty good chance it's never-played, and it appears to be the first pressing on the white-background, "spokes" type label. It's NMINT++. Overall, this copy is somewhere in the EX++ range. And … it's nicely autographed by MF in black marker on the front. A very nice copy, priced at $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #168 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, RIDIN' HIGH – Enterprise 13-101

Like 90% of the copies in existence, this one has a small spindle hole through the bottom, right-hand corner of the cover. This is a MONO copy, and the cover is otherwise in very nice, NMINT condition. Due to the cut-out, let's just call it EX to EX+. The vinyl is never-played, but due to two small sleeve scuffs, I'll only rate it as NMINT+. Overall, this copy is in the NMINT- range. And, it's nicely autographed by MF in black marker on the front cover. Easily worth $35.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #169 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, BIG BOP NOUVEAU – Intima 7 73390-1

Cut-out versions of this record are a dime a dozen, but this one is NOT a cut-out. It's a clean, MINT, never-played copy with Maynard's autograph on the front. Yours for $20.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #170 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, DUES – Mainstream MRL 359

Here's a like-new copy of the Dues LP which was only unsealed for Maynard's autograph, then placed in a clean, new plastic sleeve. It's got a NMINT+ cover and MINT, never-played vinyl. In case you're interested, it's also got the rare GREEN (as opposed to the normal RED) labels. Yours for $30.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #171 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, STORM – Nautilus NR57

Here's the rare Nautilus audiofile pressing of the Storm recording. It's much rarer than the regular pressing, and sounds a lot better, too. This one had the original shrink wrap sliced carefully at the bottom by our collector friend. He then had MF autograph the front cover nicely in black marker, then he returned it to the shrink wrap and re-sealed it with clear tape. So it's in MINT condition, and nicely autographed. Yours for $30.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #172 – HERB POMEROY, MAYNARD FERGUSON, TRUMPETS OUT FRONT – Vogue VJD567

This lot is almost identical to lot #9. I didn’t realize it at the time I listed lot #9, but our collector friend actually had Maynard and Herb autograph two identical copies of this rare LP. Just like lot #9, Herb intentionally signed it BELOW Maynard. The only difference is that this copy has some very light ring wear, visible ONLY at the bottom of the cover. Again, it's very light, and hardly noticeable. I'd rate the cover as NMINT. The vinyl looks like it might have been played once! It's NMINT+. Overall, this is a rare LP to start with, but with both signatures, and the NMINT to NMINT+ condition, it's a gangbuster!! Yours for $165.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #173 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, HOT -- Columbia JC 36124

This one is one of the nicest copies I've ever seen of this LP. Most of these have a lot of surface and ring wear, but on this copy, there's almost zero wear -- just a couple of tiny wrinkles along the edge of the cover. It's easily NMINT. The vinyl is probably never played. It's easily NMINT+. Overall, this copy is NMINT to NMINT+. And … our collector friend had Maynard autograph it in gold market next to the gold bell of the trumpet! Just a stunning autograph. Yours for $20.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #174 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, JAM SESSION (JAPANESE PRESSING) -- Nippon Phonogram EXPR-1026

This copy of this excellent Japanese pressing was removed from the shrink wrap by our collector friend, was autographed on the front very nicely by Maynard, and then was placed in a clean plastic sleeve for protection. It even retains the original paper "obi" strip, and except for the tiniest wrinkle on the very tip of the bottom, left-hand corner, is in MINT condition. It's a pristine NMINT++. Yours for $35.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #175 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, HIGH VOLTAGE -- Intima 32794

Cut-out versions of this LP are a dime a dozen, but this one is NOT a cut-out. The black cover is an unusually clean and nice NMINT+, and the vinyl is MINT, never-played. Overall, this one is NMINT++. And … it's beautifully autographed with a gold marker against the black cover -- stunning!!! I doubt you can find a nicer copy! Yours for $20.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #176 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, COLOR HIM WILD – Mainstream S/6031

What a super record! The cover on this one is super clean and nice, with the only problem being a bit of surface wear visible on the back cover. Still, it's minimal, and the cover is easily NMINT. The vinyl is likewise a clean and nice NMINT. Overall, this one is NMINT … AND … it's nicely autographed by MF on the front. A nice, clean copy … priced at $28.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #177 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, MAYNARD FERGUSON AND HIS ORIGINAL DREAMBAND, RECORDED LIVE 1956 – Artistry 104

This one is a hard-to-find 1984 Artistry pressing of the great '56 Dreamband. This is another one where our friend removed it from the shrink, had Maynard sign it, and returned it to a plastic sleeve. The autograph is in silver against the black background, and it's absolutely stunning! The cover itself is MINT, as is the vinyl -- both are just like brand new. You will NEVER find a nicer copy, as one just can't exist. Yours for $85.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #178 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, THE BEST OF MAYNARD FERGUSON (UK PRESSING) – CBS 84200

This LP looks just like its U.S. counterpart, but the cover is of thinner stock and the CBS label is very different from the U.S. Columbia label. The cover on this one shows some definite record ring wear front and back, and there's a little pigment missing from the front cover where a price sticker was removed. It's an EX cover. The vinyl has a couple of surface scratches that don't affect play. It's NMINT-. Overall, this copy is EX+. And … it's nicely autographed on the front by MF. Yours for $20.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #179 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, STRATOSPHERIC – Mercury EMS-2-406

The upper right-hand corner on this copy has a corner bend. Otherwise, this is a clean and nice Mercury re-issue LP of many of the MF tracks from the 1950s. It's a double LP, and the cover shows none of the typical ring or surface wear. Even with the corner bend, it's easily NMINT-. The vinyl is MINT, never-played. $24.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #181 – SHORTY ROGERS, 14 HISTORIC ARRANGEMENTS & PERFORMANCES – PAUSA PR 9016

Here's a 1983 compilation LP of Shorty Rogers playing with Stan Kenton, June Christy, and his own "Giants." Maynard is heard on several tracks. This one is FACTORY SEALED, but I can see just a tiny wrinkle through the shrink-wrap to the upper right-hand corner. Still, it's got a NMINT+ cover and obviously has MINT vinyl. A splendid, sealed copy. $35.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

This one is a promo LP put out by Columbia in 1977, and it includes the track Main Title from the file "Star Wars" by MF. The cover on this copy shows some surface wear, front and back. It's EX+. THIS ITEM FAILED TO SELL.

ITEM #188 – VARIOUS ARTISTS, AMERICAN JAZZMEN IN EUROPE – Vantage Records LP-512

Here's a rare LP (date unknown, but probably the 1970s) that includes MF on the track "And We Listened to Him," recorded in Copenhagen on 5/12/68. This is an extremely rare LP. It's only the second copy I've ever seen. The cover, other than a minor bend to one corner, is almost like new. It's NMINT, tending toward NMINT+. The vinyl is MINT, never-played!!! Overall, this one is NMINT++. If you don't have this LP, I'd strongly urge you to pick up this copy. Even if you CAN find another one, it's doubtful that the condition will be anywhere near this nice. A great investment at $125.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #189 – VARIOUS ARTISTS, BARGAIN DAY – EmArcy MG 36087

Here's a relatively scarce EmArcy compilation LP from the mid-1950s. It's got MF on his own track Finger Snappin', as well as with Georgie Auld on Swingin' in the Moore Park. The front paper on this cover is really clean and nice. It's NMINT. But there's a piece of transparent tape on the top spine, as well as a dark stain on the back at the top. Overall, I'd rate this cover as EX-. The vinyl has one very light scratch (doesn't affect play) on side B, but otherwise is very clean and nice. It's NMINT-. Overall, this copy is EX to EX+ -- a nice, solid copy. Hard to find, it's just $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #190 – VARIOUS ARTISTS, THE BIG BAND SCENE … AND ALL THAT JAZZ -- Big Band Archives LP-2204

OK folks. Here's a unbelievable one. First of all, this is only the second copy of this LP that I've ever held in my hands! It's an ultra-rare double gatefold compilation LP with MF on the track Lonely Town. You're not going to BELIEVE the front cover on this one. It's got a woman, lying on a mat on her stomach on a pool deck, facing away from the photographer, and totally nude expect for a towel wrapped around her head!!!!! I'm not joking! I couldn't believe it when I first heard about this cover. Our friend took this to Maynard to get his autograph on the front, and Maynard did a double-take, and almost refused to sign it. However, once again, our friend persuaded him. He also asked Maynard to "initial" the cover, but Maynard ADAMANTLY refused. (If you can't figure out why, don't ask, and I'm SURE not going to explain it to you!) The cover on this one is in super clean, NMINT+ condition. Disc 1 is NMINT; disc 2 has a few light scuffs and surface scratches, and is EX. Overall, this copy is in the NMINT- to NMINT range. An excellent copy of an ultra-rare LP, and perhaps the only one MF ever autographed. Sorry to have to ask it, but I'm guessing that this is going to go quick. $175.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #191 – VARIOUS ARTISTS, THE JAZZ GREATS VOLUME VIII, DRUM ROLE EmArcy MG 36071

Here's a mid-50's EmArcy compilation LP with a 3:20 segment of Maynard's tune "Night Letter" featuring drummer Shelly Manne. The front cover on this one is relatively clean and nice with no real damage. The bottom seam has some clear tape on it, and there's just a little bit of yellow around the edges of the cover, mainly visible on the back. It's an EX- cover. The vinyl is the original silver drummer on blue background type of label, and it's NMINT!!! Overall, this copy is EX+. A very nice copy, with outstanding vinyl. $30.00.
THIS ITEM FAILED TO SELL.

ITEM #192 – VARIOUS ARTISTS, EUROPA JAZZ – Europa Jazz EJ-1002

Most of you probably already know the story on this LP. It was issued several years ago in Italy, and it prominently states on the cover that in includes Maynard Ferguson, and has a nice color photo of him inside the gatefold. The two tracks are Pilatus and Foggy Night, both from the Maynard and Gustav LP. However, we learned definitively (about 3 years ago when the Maynard and Gustav CD was released in Czechoslovakia) that Maynard definitely DOES NOT PLAY on these two tracks. So here's an LP purporting to contain MF, showing his photo prominently, but not actually having him play on it. Still, all the MF collectors I've talked to feel this belongs in their collections. I just wanted to set the record straight and not deceive anyone! OK. The cover has some slight record ring wear and one tiny crease, but it's still NMINT. The vinyl is a pristine, never-played MINT. Overall, this copy is NMINT+. $45.00.
THIS ITEM FAILED TO SELL.

ITEM #193 – VARIOUS ARTISTS, THE HISTORY OF JAZZ VOLUME 4, ENTER THE COOL -- Capitol T796

This one is a Capitol compilation LP from 1957 with Maynard playing in the Stan Kenton band on the track Round Robin. The cover on this one is has a dime-sized discoloration on the back from a price sticker. Otherwise, it's very clean and nice, and still rates a NMINT. The vinyl is the original pressing on a turquoise Capitol label, and it's likewise NMINT. Just a super copy, this one is $22.00.
THIS ITEM FAILED TO SELL.

ITEM #194 – VARIOUS ARTISTS, INDIVIDUALS -- Columbia CG 36213

Be aware that there are two different Columbia promo LPs with this same title, and both feature Maynard. Check the catalog number carefully to determine if this is one you already have. This one features MF on the track Rocky II … Knockout! Most every copy of this LP that I've ever seen has major record ring wear. This one has just a faint touch of ring wear. It's NMINT. The vinyl is MINT, never-played. Overall, this one is NMINT+. Yours for $30.00.
THIS ITEM FAILED TO SELL.

ITEM #195 – VARIOUS ARTISTS, LULLABY OF BIRDLAND -- RCA Victor LPM-1146

This LP contains 12 different versions of the same tune -- Lullaby of Birdland. It's an ultra-popular LP with jazz collectors in general. MF is featured on the version with Charlie Barnet's band. The front looks clean and nice, the seams are solid, and there's just a bit of surface wear visible on the back. A collector rubber-stamped his name in purple in on that back at top center. I'd rate this cover as EX. The vinyl has a few very light surface scratches which don't significantly affect play. It's likewise EX. Overall, this copy is nice and solid, and a well-above-average EX. Normally selling in the $40.00 range, this one is $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #196 – VARIOUS ARTISTS, MONTREUX SUMMIT VOL. 2, SPECIAL RADIO EDITION – Columbia AS 440

Here's a single-disc special promo version of the Montreux Summit Vol. 2 LP. It's probably 100 times rarer than the normal Montreux Summit Vol. 2 double-disc LP. It's only one of a handful that I've ever seen. The front cover has a slight mark in the upper right-hand corner where a price sticker once resided. It's minor, but worth a mention. Otherwise, the cover is almost like new. It's NMINT. The vinyl is a super clean and never-played MINT. Overall, this one is NMINT+. Yours for $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #197 – GEORGIE AULD AND HIS ORCHESTRA, IN THE LAND OF HI-FI -- EmArcy MG 36060

Here's the original mid-50s LP of tenor sax player and bandleader Georgie Auld. This is a really great LP. Maynard can be heard to great advantage on a number of passages, blowing away at the top of this great band. And this one is in great condition. The cover paper is super -- no flaws that I can see. The seams are all intact, and there's just the slightest amount of the brownish toning that attacks all these EmArcy covers. It's definitely a NMINT cover. The vinyl has the original silver drummer on blue background label. There's just a little bit of discoloration on the side B label where a price sticker was removed. It's minimal. The disc surface has just a few very, very light surface scratches. They don't significantly affect play. I'd rate the vinyl as NMINT-. Overall, this is a super nice copy in NMINT- to NMINT condition. Yours for $40.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #198 – CHARLIE BARNET & HIS ORCHESTRA, 1949 – Alamac QSR 2446

The cover on this one has just a hint of surface wear, but it's still easily NMINT. The vinyl looks like it's never-played. There's just one ultra small sleeve scuff on one side. Otherwise, it's in pristine condition. Let's call it NMINT+. Overall, this one is NMINT to NMINT+. Yours for $30.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #199 – CHARLIE BARNET & HIS ORCHESTRA, CLASSICS IN JAZZ – Capitol T-624

Here's the original, early 1950s 12" LP of the 1949/50 Barnet band, including MF, on the tracks Pan Americana, Over the Rainbow, Really?, and Claude Reigns. These original Capitol LPs are getting very hard to find. The cover on this one looks almost new from the front. There's almost zero wear! On the back, there's a dime-sized spot of discoloration where a price sticker was removed, and some general surface wear and brownish "foxing" in a number of places. The seams are all tight and nice. Except for the back cover, this would be an easy NMINT. Due to the minor problems on the back, let's call it EX+. The vinyl is just about the cleanest and nicest I've ever seen for this LP. It's NMINT. A really nice copy, it's yours for $45.00.
THIS ITEM FAILED TO SELL.

ITEM #200 – CHARLIE BARNET, LONELY STREET – Verve MGV-2040

Here's the Barnet Orchestra with Maynard on several tracks from the mid-1950s. If you've never heard MF on the track Lumby, here it is, and he absolutely wails on this one! The cover on this copy is a clean and nice NMINT-, with the only problems being a tiny bit of surface wear, a tiny ding on the bottom seam, and three small inked check marks on the back cover in one corner. Still, it's a very clean and nice cover. The vinyl is just ultra clean and nice -- NMINT+. It's probably only been played less than a handful of times! And … this one has "Verve" on the label, as opposed to "MGM", so it's the earlier, original pressing! A super copy, it's yours for $40.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!
