MAJOR COLLECTOR SALE #1 -- THIS SALE CLOSED 7/29/05

ITEM #241 – VARIOUS ARTISTS, BATTLE OF THE BIG BANDS – Capitol T667

Here's the unbelievable LP from the mid-50s that has MF with Stan Kenton's band on Jolly Rogers and What's New (a Ferguson showpiece), with Charlie Barnet's band on Pan Americana, and with Billy May's band on the track Hi-Fi. How Capitol managed to squeeze him onto four tracks on this LP shall forever remain a mystery. Anyway, so much the better for us. The cover on this copy is relatively clean and nice -- far above average. I'd call it NMINT, but there's some transparent tape on the top seam. Still, it's easily an EX++ cover. The vinyl has quite a few small, light surface scratches, but they do translate to a bit of background noise on playback. It's EX. Overall, this copy is EX+ -- a clean and nice copy. These are very hard to find in this nice condition. $30.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

Folks, this one is an absolute classic, and it's one of the most important works of MF's career. This one is MINT, FACTORY SEALED, and, of course, retains the original paper obi strip inside the plastic wrapper. It's $35.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

Here's an extremely tough LP to find, both in its original 1956 U.S. format and also in this 1980s Japanese pressing, on pure virgin vinyl. MF is included on valve trombone, in what is arguably one of the greatest West Coast Jazz LPs of all time. Just sensational stuff! The cover on this one is absolutely superb. It looks like it just came out of the original shrink wrap. The vinyl is MINT, never-played. It still contains the original Japanese liner notes inside the cover. Let's call this one MINT overall. ITEM #247 – BUD SHANK, A STUDY OF BUD SHANK, WITH MAYNARD FERGUSON - STU WILLIAMSON - BOB ENEVOLDSON – United US-7806

This is another great Bud Shank LP. The cover on this copy has a little wear along the edges, but it's still easily NMINT. The vinyl appears never-played, but does has a couple of light scuffs. Conservatively, it's also NMINT. Overall, this is a super clean NMINT copy. Yours for $22.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #248 – BUD SHANK WITH MAYNARD FERGUSON - STU WILLIAMSON AND BOB ENEVOLDSON – Crown Records CLP 5311

Once again, here's MF with Bud Shank. The cover on this copy has a sticker at upper left with "S41" written on it. This sticker, as well as the entire upper seam and the entire left spine, have transparent tape on them. It's the non-yellowing type, so is hard to see, but it's definitely there. On the back, a sticker was removed and tore the cover paper, but it's been blacked-in with a marker, and since it's on a black part of the cover, I missed it initally. So, this cover has some definite problem, but believe it or not, it really looks quite nice. Due to the sticker and tape and other damage, it's just VG+ -- slightly better than average. The vinyl is near-perfect -- NMINT+. Overall, this copy is EX+. Yours for $20.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #249 – VARIOUS ARTISTS, JAZZ GOES HOLLYWOOD – Cameo SC1078

Here's a relatively rare compilation on the Cameo label, featuring MF on three of the tracks from the Cameo era. I seldom see one of these. This is the STEREO version. The front cover on this one, which is laminated, is super clean and nice. There's a little rubbing on the seam at bottom right. On the back, quite a bit of surface wear is visible, and the letters "NR" are rubber-stamped in blue. I'd rate this cover as EX+. The vinyl is NMINT. Overall, this copy is NMINT-. Yours for $40.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #250 – VARIOUS ARTISTS, SOUND MUSICAL ADVICE -- Columbia A2S 323

Here's an extremely hard-to-find Columbia promo LP with MF on "Soar Like an Eagle." I've only seen a handful of these since they were released in 1977. The cover on this copy is a clean and nice NMINT. The vinyl is MINT, never-played. Overall, it's easily NMINT+. Yours for $45.00.
THIS ITEM FAILED TO SELL.

ITEM #251 – VARIOUS ARTISTS, $64,000 JAZZ – Columbia CL 777

Here's a mid-50s compilation LP with the Pete Rugolo track The Shrike, which includes MF. The cover on this one shows a bit of surface wear, front and back, and some track timings have been written next to the tracks on the back cover. The seams are a bit rough and are cracked in a couple of places, and there's transparent tape at upper right. This cover is just a hair better than average -- VG+. The vinyl, on the other hand, is super clean and nice -- easily NMINT. Overall, this copy is EX to EX+. Yours for $20.00.
THIS ITEM FAILED TO SELL.

ITEM #253 – VARIOUS ARTISTS, LULLABIES OF BIRDLAND -- Forum F-9056

Here's a Forum compilation LP from the '60s with MF on the track Where's Teddy. (Check the catalog number carefully on this one, as there are two different LPs with the same title.) The cover on this one shows just a bit of surface and record ring wear, mainly on the back. There's a 3" seam split at upper right. I'd rate this one as EX to EX+. The vinyl is super clean and nice - NMINT+. Overall, this one is EX++. Yours for $22.00.
THIS ITEM FAILED TO SELL.

ITEM #254 – VARIOUS ARTISTS, I LIKE JAZZ! -- Columbia JZ 1

Here's a 1950s Columbia compilation LP with the Pete Rugolo track 4:20 A.M. (with MF, of course). The cover on this one is a clean and nice NMINT -- one of the nicest I've seen. The vinyl is likewise NMINT. Overall, this is a super clean and nice NMINT copy! $25.00.

SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #257 – SHORTY ROGERS, SHORT STOPS – Bluebird 5917-1-RB

Here's a 1987 Bluebird double gatefold LP with Maynard playing on most of the tracks. This is just absolutely fantastic, early, west coast jazz, and Maynard can be heard blowing the roof off on a number of tracks. It's also got complete discographical information on the cover, and if you own the CD, you've only got SOME of the tracks that are on this LP. The cover on this one looks like it just came out of the shrink wrap. There's a tiny, pea-size spot on the back of the cover that looks like the cover paper didn't get inked very well at the factory. Otherwise, it's a flawless cover. I'd still rate it as NMINT+. The vinyl is MINT, never-played. You won't find one nicer. $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #258 – SHORTY ROGERS, SHORTY ROGERS PLAYS RICHARD ROGERS – RCA Victor LPM-1428

Here's the original Shorty Rogers LP in which he plays a number of the great Richard Rogers tunes. One of my favorites is Mountain Greenery, but they're all great -- super big band arrangements, with MF blowing on top throughout. The cover on this one has a little surface and ring wear visible, but it's relatively minor. There's a small pea-sized spot at upper right where the front paper was damaged by a price sticker, but it's been repaired and doesn't show too badly. This one is EX. The vinyl is just absolutely PRISTINE! It's NMINT++!!! Overall, this copy is NMINT-. Yours for $22.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #259 – SHORTY ROGERS, SHORTY ROGERS PLAYS RICHARD ROGERS (SPANISH RELEASE) -- RCA Victor LPM-1428

ITEM #260 – JOHNNY RICHARDS, SOMETHING ELSE AGAIN -- Bethlehem BCP-6032

Here's MF with Johnny Richards and his orchestra on a number of slightly progressive but swinging big band tunes. Originally issued in the 1950s, this is the 1977 re-issue LP. This copy is still factory sealed. The only flaw I can detect is just the tiniest corner bend at bottom left, which is just barely visible through the shrink wrap. So it's factory sealed, NMINT+ cover, MINT vinyl. Yours for $22.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #261 – RUSS GARCIA WITH MAYNARD FERGUSON, I'LL NEVER FORGET WHAT'S HER NAME – Bethlehem BCP-6044

Here's MF with the Russ Garcia Orchestra on a 1978 re-issue LP of a 1950s recording. Big band jazz just doesn't get any better than this! It's some of the best west coast arranging and playing I've heard. The cover on this one is an ultra clean and nice NMINT+ -- nearly flawless. The vinyl is MINT, never played. Our collector friend took this one out of the shrink wrap strictly in order to obtain a nice silver autograph from MF on the front cover. It's a beauty! Yours for $30.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #262 – FRANCES FAYE, FRANCES FAYE SINGS FOLK SONGS – Bethlehem BCP-6017

Here's MF on trumpet with the Russ Garcia Orchestra backing singer Frances Faye. This is a relatively rare 1958 LP, and it books for $40.00 in NMINT condition. The covers on these are always flawed, but this one isn't too bad. The front paper is clean and nice, with just a tiny triangular section missing in the extreme bottom, left-hand corner. There's also a minor bend at upper right. However, unlike most copies of this LP, the seams are all intact. This almost is never the case with this LP. I'd rate this cover as EX overall. The vinyl has a few light surface scratches. Our collector friend listened to it and he rates it EX, and that's the way it looks, visually, to me, as well. So overall, this is a nice, solid EX LP, and is much better than most copies I've seen. It's yours for $25.00.
THIS ITEM FAILED TO SELL.

ITEM #263 – FRANCES FAYE, BAD, BAD FRANCES FAYE -- Bethlehem BCP 6006

Here's a Russ Garcia re-issue LP from the 1976 with MF on valve trombone. (The cover lists "two others" on trombone, and it's MF and Frank Rosolino.) The cover on this one is a clean and nice NMINT, tending toward NMINT+. The vinyl is MINT, never played. It's yours for $22.00.
THIS ITEM FAILED TO SELL.

ITEM #264 -- JIMMY DORSEY, THE UNCOLLECTED VOL. 3, 1949, 1951 -- Hindsight Records HSR-165

Here's an extremely hard-to-find Jimmy Dorsey LP with MF. This copy is just absolutely pristine, and although it's opened, it's still in the original shrink wrap. I'm going to go out on a limb and call this cover MINT -- it's THAT nice!!! The vinyl is MINT, never played. So, this is unquestionably a MINT condition copy. Just superb. Due to its rarity, it's $65.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #265 – BING CROSBY, BING SINGS WHILST BREGMAN SWINGS -- Verve MGV-2020

Here's the SWINGIN' Bing Crosby album from the 1950s. I've listened to it so many times, I can sing along, by memory. Bing is backed by the fantastic Buddy Bregman big band, including, of course, our man Maynard. This is one of my favorite vocal albums of all time! I assure you, you'll love this one. The cover on this copy is solid, with no damage of any kind other than a tiny bit of surface wear and a tiny bit of brownish toning around the edges. It's NMINT-. The vinyl is really nice, NMINT. It comes in two flavors, with "Verve" or with "MGM" at the bottom of the label. The "Verve" type is the original 1956 pressing, and indeed, this is the "Verve" type. So here's an original 1956 pressing in NMINT- to NMINT condition. I doubt you'll find another one that's this nice. It lists for $40.00 in the jazz guide. This copy is yours for $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #266 – JUNE CHRISTY, THIS IS JUNE CHRISTY (UK RELEASE) – Capitol CAPS 26 0051 1

This is the UK version of the great June Christy album. Pete Rugolo's orchestra backed Christy on this fine LP, and Maynard was in the orchestra, blowin' away. This copy is still in the original shrink wrap, and although it's opened, the cover is in pristine MINT condition. The vinyl is MINT, never-played!!! So here's a superb, MINT, import LP in its original shrink wrap. The U.S. version of this LP, which is much more common, lists for $40.00 in NMINT condition. This UK version is MUCH RARER, is in MINT (not NMINT condition), and I can assure you that you won't find one nicer! Easily worth the asking price of $40.00.
THIS ITEM FAILED TO SELL.

ITEM #267 – JUNE CHRISTY, SOMETHING COOL – Capitol T-516

Here's another Rugolo-backed effort by June Christy, dating to 1955. This is a highly sought-after LP in the jazz community, and it lists for $40.00 in the jazz guide. The cover on this one is NMINT! The vinyl is clean and nice with just a few very light surface scratches. It plays as NMINT-, but let's call it EX+. Overall, this copy is NMINT- -- just a super copy. Yours for $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #268 – CHICAGO, CHICAGO 13 – Columbia FC 36105

As I'm sure you know, Maynard was recording the Hot LP, whilst across the hall Chicago was recording their 13 LP. They invited MF over and he laid down a fantastic trumpet solo on the much-sampled track Street Player. (Uh ... you know … "sampled" … used by disco artists on other LPs, such as a track released a few years back by The Buckeheads.) Anyway, I digress. This copy has a NMINT cover, NMINT+ (possibly never-played) vinyl, and retains its original custom inner sleeve. AND … it's nicely autographed by MF on the front cover. Yours for $20.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #269 -- VARIOUS ARTISTS, WAY TO THE WEST (SPANISH IMPORT) -- Fresh Sounds 054-2602131

Here's a RARE various artists LP including MF on the tracks Love Locked Out, Band Ain't Draggin', Short Wave, and Take the "A" Train, all recorded in Hollywood on 9/13/50! This is only the fourth or fifth copy of this LP I've ever seen. This one was removed from the shrink wrap to be AUTOGRAPHED by MF, very nicely, on the front cover, then returned to a clean, new plastic sleeve. It's essentially in MINT condition -- both cover and vinyl. What more could you ask for? $165.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #270 – CLIFFORD BROWN JAMS 2 -- Nippon Phonogram 195J-2

Here's MF with a number of previously unreleased tracks with Clifford Brown from the 1954 Jam Session. Included are Coronado, Introduction, I'll Remember April, Crazy He Calls Me. SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #271 – CHARLIE BARNET AND HIS ORCHESTRA, SWINGIN' ON NOTHIN' -- Big Band Archives LP-1209

Here's a relatively hard-to-find LP of MF with the Barnet Orchestra. The cover on this one has some definite record ring and surface wear, as well as some significant seam wear, and a bend in the bottom right-hand corner. I'd rate it as EX- to EX. The vinyl is a seldom-played NMINT-. Overall, this copy is EX to EX+. $22.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #272 – CHARLIE BARNET AND HIS ORCHESTRA, "RHAPSODY IN BARNET" – Swing Era Records LP-1019

Here's MF with the Barnet Orchestra on two tracks from August, 1949: Rhapsody In Blue and Cornacopia. (Doc is on this one, as well!) The cover on this copy is very nice, with the only problem being just a hint of toning around the edges and a tiny bit of ring wear, visible on the back. I'd still rate it as a NMINT- cover, because it's otherwise in super condition. The vinyl has never been played, but it does have an insignificant sleeve scuff. Still, it's NMINT++. Overall, this copy is easily NMINT. AND … it's autographed nicely by MF on the front cover at lower left. A super LP! $30.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #273 – ONE NIGHT STAND WITH THE BATTLE OF THE BANDS, CHARLIE BARNET VS. WOODY HERMAN, STAN KENTON AS REFEREE -- Joyce LP-1012

Here's Maynard with the Barnet Band from July 30, 1949. The cover on this copy has just the tiniest little wrinkle in the extreme tip of the lower left-hand corner. Still, it's NMINT+ -- just a pristine cover. The vinyl is MINT, never-played. And … it's got one of the nicest MF autographs I've ever seen on the front cover. It's done with sharp, relatively thick black marker, and Maynard placed a sweeping, crisp autograph across the cover. Just beautiful!!! So … you've got an almost totally MINT LP here, with a flawless, bold autograph. One of the best extant, it's yours for $50.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #274 – CHARLIE BARNET AND HIS ORCHESTRA, SOME LIKE IT HOT -- Swing Era Records LP-1002

Here's another relatively hard-to-find Barnet LP with MF. This one has the great MF tune All The Things You Are!!! Screamin'!!! The black covers on these typically are really shot, but in this case, the cover looks GREAT! The only significant problem is a piece of clear tape on the seam in the upper right and the bottom right corners. Still, even with these minor flaws, it's easily NMINT-. The vinyl is blue, not black, and it's highly sought after by general record collectors. (They call it "blue wax".) It's MINT, never-played. Overall, this copy is NMINT! AND … the black cover is beautifully autographed in silver ink on the front by MF!!! Just a wonderful copy. Yours for $28.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #275 – CHARLIE BARNET AND HIS ORCHESTRA, CLASSICS IN JAZZ -- Capitol T-624

Here's the classic Charlie Barnet LP that was recorded in 1949 when MF was in the band. This is the true studio session where MF was first heard on record in the U.S. Tracks include Pan Americana, Claude Reigns, etc. The cover on this one is really splendid -- vivid colors, intact seams -- about the only problem is three tiny check marks on the back in the upper right-hand corner. Even with those check marks, it's still a NMINT cover. The vinyl is in never-played, MINT condition!!! Just unbelievable!!! This copy is easily NMINT+. Very, very hard to find in this condition, this copy is $45.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #276 – CHARLIE BARNET AND HIS ORCHESTRA, REDSKIN ROMP – RCA LPM-1091

Here's the original Charlie Barnet LP with MF from 1955. This one list in the jazz guide for $50.00 in NMINT condition, and it's no wonder. It's really a swingin' big band LP! And MF can be heard throughout, blowing at the top of the band. The cover on this one is super clean and nice. There's just a hint of a seam crack forming at bottom center, but it's not split. On the back, someone rubber-stamped their acquisition date: FEB 2 1956 in tiny black letter. They also stamped "247" just underneath the date -- presumably their personal catalog number. It's even smaller than the date. If it wasn't for these two small flaws, I'd rate the cover as NMINT to NMINT+. It still easily deserves a NMINT-. The vinyl has MAYBE been played once or twice -- it's an ultra clean and nice NMINT+!!! Overall, this copy is NMINT. One of the nicest copies I've seen, it's $45.00.
THIS ITEM FAILED TO SELL.

ITEM #277 -- CHARLIE BARNET, LONELY STREET -- Verve V-2040

Here's a hard-to-find Verve LP from the mid-'50s with Maynard blowing the roof off on several tunes, most notably, Lumby. The cover on this copy is clean and nice, with just a little surface wear visible, mainly on the back. Still, it's NMINT. The vinyl is NMINT-. This is the type with MGM on the label -- a second pressing. (Frankly, in my experience, these are much harder to find than the first pressings, which have "Verve" on the lablel.) This one is priced at $30.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #278 – BENNY GOODMAN AND CHARLIE BARNET, CAPITOL JAZZ CLASSICS VOL. 15, BEBOP SPOKEN HERE – Capitol M-11061

Here's Maynard with the Barnet band on Bebop Spoken Here, Claude Reigns, and Really? The cover on this LP show just a hint of surface wear on the front, and a little roughness on the left spine. There's an almost imperceptible bend in the very tip of the upper, right-hand corner, and a tiny spot of discoloration on the back where a price sticker was removed. Still, it's a nice, solid, clean cover, and easily rates a NMINT-. The vinyl looks like it's only been played a couple of times. It's NMINT to NMINT+. Overall, this copy is NMINT. Yours for $20.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #279 – CHARLIE BARNET AND HIS ORCHESTRA, 1944-1949 – Golden Era Records GE-15015
