MAJOR COLLECTOR SALE #1 -- THIS SALE CLOSED 7/29/05

ITEM #281 -- CHARLIE BARNET IN DISCO ORDER, VOLUME 21 -- Ajaz Records 217

This is one of the rare Disco Order LPs which attempted to catalog all the recordings of artists by date. This one for Charlie Barnet covers the period from September 2, 1947 to March 16, 1949. MF plays on the last three tracks, from March 16, 1949. These are VERY hard to come by. The cover on this one shows a little light record ring wear (minimal). It's NMINT. The vinyl is MINT, never-played!!!. A super nice copy -- one of the best you'll find. $55.00.

ITEM #282 – CHARLIE BARNET IN DISCO ORDER, VOLUME 22 -- Ajaz Records 225

This is one of the rare Disco Order LPs which attempted to catalog all the recordings of artists by date. This one for Charlie Barnet covers the period from March 17, 1949 to December 4, 1950. MF plays on 11 of the 12 tracks, from March 17, 1949 to August 16, 1949. These are VERY hard to come by. The cover on this one shows extremely light surface wear (super minimal). NMINT to NMINT+. The vinyl is MINT, never-played!!!. A super nice copy -- one of the best you'll find. $65.00.

ITEM #283 – CHARLIE BARNET IN DISCO ORDER, VOLUME 24 -- Ajaz Records 273

This is one of the rare Disco Order LPs which attempted to catalog all the recordings of artists by date. This one for Charlie Barnet covers the period from July 10, 1952 to December 6, 1954. MF plays on 10 of the 14 tracks, from November 29, 1954 to December 6, 1954. These are VERY hard to come by. The cover on this one shows some light record ring wear and a tiny bit of toning, just around the edges, but both are minor. I'd still rate this cover as NMINT. The vinyl is MINT, never-played!!!. A super nice copy -- one of the best you'll find. $60.00.

ITEM #284 – VARIOUS ARTISTS, MODERN JAZZ GALLERY (SPANISH RELEASE) -- Fresh Sound Records 252282-1

Here's a 1985 Spanish re-issue of the 1959 Kapp KXL 5001 LP entitled Modern Jazz Gallery. The original is nearly impossible to find these days, and this Spanish re-issue is hard to come by, as well. It's a double LP of West Coast Jazz recorded by six different jazz groups between 10/17 and 12/3/56. Maynard plays with the Russell Garcia Orchestra on five tracks, recorded 11/2/56. The original Kapp LP only had four of these tracks, but this Spanish re-issue includes a track called Number Four, as well as the four originals: Music City, Fish Tail, Smoggy Day, and Los Angeles River. The cover would be a pristine, NMINT++, but it's got a quarter-sized disturbance at upper right where the price sticker was removed. Too bad! This reduces the cover to just NMINT-. The vinyl, however, is pristine! MINT, never-played. Overall, this copy is NMINT to NMINT+, with the only problem being the sticker tear. Normally selling for about $60.00, this copy is yours for just $45.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #285 – SASCHA BURLAND AND HIS ORCHESTRA, SWINGIN' THE JINGLES -- Riverside 7615

Here's the LP that is missing from most serious MF collections. It's the mid-50s LP by bandleader Sascha Burland called Swingin' the Jingles. Burland took a number of famous TV and radio commercials, and wrote jazz scores for them. He then took some of the greatest jazz studio musicians in Hollywood (including MF) and laid down these interesting tracks. It sounds corny, but it was really a serious effort. The arrangements are quite good, and it comes off pretty nicely. MF solos on, of all things, Chiquita Banana! The cover on this copy has seen better days. It's got a piece of transparent tape at upper right covering a spot of price sticker damage (dime-sized). It's got some light surface wear, some seam wear, and the bottom right corner of the seam has transparent tape on it. On the back, there's a light spot where a price sticker was removed, a red and white sticker, some obvious water staining, and the words DJ COPY NOT FOR SALE rubber-stamped at top. At best, this cover is just VG-. The vinyl is very nice. It's got white DJ labels, and I'd rate it as NMINT. Overall, this copy is somewhere in the EX- range, but keep in mind that the cover is definitely not the best. I've seen these sell in Internet auctions for $200.00 or more. In this condition, this copy is just $65.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #286 – THE AXIDENTALS, HELLO, WE'RE THE AXIDENTALS! – ABC Paramount ABC-138

Here's MF backing a vocal group called The Axidentals from the late 1950s. This group sounds a lot like Manhattan Transfer, and it's really interesting jazz. The cover on this copy looks near-perfect from the front. However, on close inspection, there's a 3" seam split at upper right, and the spine is cracked at upper left. The back has very heavy surface wear. It must have been stored in a very dirty record store bin at some time or other. I'd rate this cover as VG+ to EX-. The vinyl, on the other hand, is a clean and nice NMINT! Overall, this copy is EX. Yours for $22.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #287 -- VIDO MUSSO, THE SWINGIN'ST -- Crown Records CLP 5007

Here's a hard-to-find Crown LP from the mid-50s, with MF on trumpet in a rhythm and blues setting. You've probably never heard MF play anything quite like this before. It's one of my favorites! The covers on these are almost always badly damaged due to poor initial construction at the factory. This copy is one of the nicer ones I've seen. There's a little scrape at upper left, next to the spine, and a 4" seam split at upper right. The front paper is otherwise clean and nice, but the back paper shows a bit of surface wear and light toning. Given the condition of most of these, however, this one is definitely one of the better ones. It's EX. The vinyl is the nicest I've seen -- NMINT+. Overall, this copy is NMINT-. Yours for $22.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #288 – PEREZ PRADO AND HIS ORCHESTRA, LATIN SATIN – RCA Victor LPM-1459

Here's Maynard with the Perez Prado Orchestra from the mid-50s. The cover on this one looks really nice, but on closer inspection, someone wrote "JACKIE" in tiny letters on the front of the top seam, dead center. There's yellowing Scotch tape on the seams in the upper right and lower right corners, as well as at bottom center. The front paper shows just a hint of surface wear, but there's significant surface and ring wear on the back, as well as a dime-sized spot of discoloration where a price sticker was removed. So what looks like a really nice cover from the front is only VG- to VG. The disc has a few light scuffs and surface scratches, mainly on side 2. I'd rate it as EX- to EX. Overall, this copy is VG+ -- just slightly better than average. It's yours for $20.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #289 – PEREZ PRADO AND HIS ORCHESTRA, HAVANA, 3 A.M. – RCA Victor LPM-1257

Here's Maynard with the Perez Prado Orchestra from the mid-50s. The cover on this one is really nice, with no significant flaws. It's easily NMINT. The vinyl is quite nice, as well. Our collector friend just played it, and reports a little audible noise from a light scratch on side 1, track 2, but says the rest of the LP plays as NMINT. Let's call it EX+. Overall, this copy is NMINT-. Yours for $20.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #290 – SHORTY ROGERS, COURTS THE COUNT -- RCA Victor LJM-1004

Here's another one with MF. This is one of the most popular jazz LPs from the 1950s, and MF can be heard on it playing in the high register on many of the passages. These "book" for lots of bucks! The gatefold cover has some very light surface wear visible on the front, and a bit heavier wear visible on the back. Also on the back is a pea-sized scrape in the surface paper. Inside the gatefold, there's a large, rectangular spot of discoloration where a sticker was removed. There are two pieces of yellowing Scotch tape visible on the right edge, and there are seam cracks or splits at top and bottom. Someone also wrote numbers, in ink, next to each track listing. All this adds up to quite a bit of damage for what looks like a nice, clean LP from the front. I'd rate it as just VG- to VG. The vinyl has just a few very light scuffs and surface scratches. It plays just fine, and I'd rate it as NMINT-. Overall, this copy is a flawed, but reasonable EX-. Yours for just $20.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #291 -- SHORTY ROGERS AND HIS GIANTS, THE BIG SHORTY ROGERS EXPRESS -- RCA Victor LPM-1350

This is another original, relatively rare Shorty Rogers LP with MF. It dates to the mid 50s, and has a great cover photo of Shorty sitting on the front of a Santa Fe locomotive. The cover on this one has clean and nice front paper, with just a bit of surface wear visible. There's transparent tape on the seams in the upper right and lower right corners, as well as a 6" seam split at bottom center. There's also a light brownish stain in the lower left corner. On the back, some definite surface wear is visible. I'd rate this cover as VG -- just average. The vinyl, however, is NMINT. Overall, this copy is EX. A nice, solid copy of this original, rather pricey LP. Yours for just $20.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #292 – SHORTY ROGERS AND HIS GIANTS, SHORTY ROGERS PLAYS RICHARD ROGERS -- RCA Victor LPM-1428

This LP has a relatively nice cover. The front paper is clean and nice, the seams are intact -- solid. The back paper shows a bit of surface wear, and there's a record shop sticker adhering to the surface, along with a rubber-stamped "SPECIAL ISSUE" notation. Although it looks NMINT from the front, the problems on the back reduce it to just EX. The vinyl is relatively clean, but does have a few light surface scratches that translate to some definite noise on playback. I'd rate the vinyl as EX, as well. So, overall, this is a nice, solid EX copy with some minor flaws. Yours for just $20.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #293 – MAYNARD FERGUSON AND CHRIS CONNOR, TWO'S COMPANY -- Roulette R 52068

Here's the great MONO MF and Chris Connor vocal LP. The cover on this one has just a hint of record ring wear starting to form, but it's still a clean and nice NMINT. The vinyl has just a couple of very light scuffs, but they don't affect play. It's NMINT, as well. Overall, this copy is NMINT. And … it's nicely autographed by MF on the front in thin black marker!!! Just a super copy. Yours for $25.00.
THIS ITEM FAILED TO SELL.

ITEM #294 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, DIMENSIONS (JAPANESE RELEASE) -- Nippon Phonogram 195J-10103

Folks, this is an extremely rare LP! It's the 1988 re-issue of the original U.S. Dimensions LP, first issued in 1954. However, the Japanese producer added four rare tracks to this one that were not on the original -- Roses All the Way, And So I Waited Around, Homing Pigeon, and Wow. Collectors have dubbed this the "Dimensions + 4" LP. It's almost never available for collectors anymore, even in Japan. The cover on this one retains the original "obi" (loose paper strip) and the original loose-leaf Japanese liner notes. It's in like-new, MINT condition!!! Just superb!!! The vinyl is MINT, never-played!!! So here's a beautiful, MINT copy of this superb LP. It's yours for $125.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #295 – VARIOUS ARTISTS, TRUMPETS ON HIGH -- Tall Tree TT 6002

Here's the 1984 compilation LP that is an absolute necessity in EVERY serious MF collection. This one has Maynard, Miles, and Diz playing various tunes, and Maynard's contribution includes the tunes Take the 'A' Train, What's New, The Hot Canary, Short Wave, Love Locked Out, and Band Ain't Draggin' -- all tracks that were originally released on 45s and 78s in the early '50s, and are some of THE GREATEST tracks Maynard ever recorded in terms of stratospheric playing!!!! He just absolutely WAILS on some of these!!! This LP is highly sought-after by collectors, and I can usually never keep them in stock for long. The cover on this one is a clean and nice NMINT, bordering on NMINT+ -- nearly flawless! The vinyl is MINT, never-played. And … it's beautifully autographed by MF on the front in thin, black marker! Just a superb copy. It's yours for $115.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #296 – MAYNARD FERGUSON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, SI! SI! - M.F. – Roulette SR 52084

Here's the STEREO version of the great MF LP with tracks like What'll I Do, Morgan-Point, Almost Like Being in Love, Born to be Blue, etc. It's an MF classic! The cover on this copy shows just a hint of record ring wear, but it's minimal, and still easily rates a NMINT. The vinyl is MINT, never-played. And … it's beautifully autographed on the front, at upper left, by MF in thin, black marker. Just a super autograph, and a super LP. Yours for $30.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #297 -- MAYNARD FERGUSON, SCREAMIN' BLUES -- Mainstream MRL 316

Here's the early '70s re-issue of the 1965 Blues Roar LP. You may remember it as having the cover where they reversed the photo negative, and have MF playing a left-handed horn! These come in both gatefold and standard covers. The gatefold is the original and most common; the standard cover came out later, and is quite a bit harder to find. This one has the standard type cover. This copy was removed from the shrink wrap, was autographed by MF in silver on the front, and was then placed in a clean, new plastic sleeve. It's in MINT condition!!! With the beautiful autograph, and the rarer cover, and the splendid condition, this one is still priced at just $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #298 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, RIDIN' HIGH – Enterprise 13-101

Here's Maynard on his interesting jazz-rock effort from the late '60s. If you haven't heard it before, be aware that it's not the greatest recording -- a few clinkers here and there, and rather bad arrangements. Nevertheless, it's interesting, and a must in every serious MF collection. Tracks include Sunny, Meet a Cheetah (I kid you not!), Wack-Wack, Alfie, etc. The covers on these have core holes in them about 90% of the time because they didn't sell well and got "drilled" so they could be tossed in the 99-cent bin. This one is no exception. It has a nice, clean core hole at upper left. There's also a significant corner bend at upper right. Too bad, because otherwise, this is a pristine, like-new cover. Due to these problems, let's call it EX. The vinyl is MINT, never-played. Overall, this one is EX++. And, it's autographed very nicely on the front by MF. It's yours for $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #299 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, CHAMELEON – Columbia PC 33007

Here's one of Maynard's greatest albums from the Columbia era. The cover on this copy is nearly perfect. The only problem I can see is a small, rectangular "dull spot" that can only be seen in oblique lighting. There must have been a sticker on the cover at some time, and when it was removed, it took a little of the cover gloss with it. It's super minimal! You can't even see it under normal lighting. The cover is still easily NMINT, tending to NMINT+. The vinyl is MINT, never-played. And … MF autographed it beautifully in silver ink against the black background. Just splendid! This copy is yours for $20.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #300 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, ECHOES OF AN ERA, A MESSAGE FROM NEWPORT/NEWPORT SUITE -- Roulette RE-116

Here's another great MF LP. This one came out in 1972, and it's a double gatefold re-issue LP containing BOTH of the earlier LPs, A Message from Newport and Newport Suite. This is some of the finest work ever recorded by MF. The purple covers on these LPs almost always have significant record ring wear. This copy has some definite ring wear. Otherwise, however, it's a clean and nice cover. Due to the ring wear, let's call it EX++. The vinyl is MINT, never-played. Overall, this copy is NMINT. And … it's nicely autographed on the front in black ink by MF. Overall, it's a great copy, and it's yours for just $22.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #301 -- MAYNARD FERGUSON, GONNA FLY NOW / THE FLY -- Columbia 23-10546

Here's one of the relative rare 12" disco singles of MF on two re-mixed tracks from the Conquistador LP. I seldom see one of these. This one is the normal red label variety. It comes on an original Columbia disco cover -- the type with a woman's pursed lips on the cover and bright red lipstick. These covers almost always have heavy record ring wear, but not this one! It looks almost like new! It's NMINT+. And as an added bonus, Maynard signed it in white marker. The way he signed it is really interesting. He signed "Maynard Ferguso" as if the lips were spitting out the words. When he came to the "n" at the end of his name, he scribbled it and gave it a long six-inch tail, trailing down the cover, and ending in a sort of "splash" at the end. I've never seen him sign anything like this before. The gentleman who's selling this agrees. He had Maynard sign a couple of hundred things over the years, and he said he almost always signs things "legit." I guess on this particular occasion Maynard was just in an exceptionally good and playful mood, and having a great time. It makes for a really fun cover -- totally unique in my experience! And … the vinyl is just absolutely pristine -- it's MINT, NEVER PLAYED!!!!!! So here's a superb copy of this hard-to-find 12" single, in essentially mint condition, with a superb and unusual autograph. You'll never find another one like it! It's yours for $75.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #302 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, STORM -- Palo Alto Jazz PA 8052-N

Here's Maynard on the CONVENTIONAL Storm LP from 1982. This copy was removed by our collector friend from the shrink wrap, it was autographed by MF in fine black marker, and then returned to a clean, new plastic sleeve. It's in MINT condition, and beautifully autographed by MF. There's also a photocopy of a Holton caricature of MF enclosed. Groovy! Yours for $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #303 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, STORM -- Nautilus NR 57

Here's Maynard on the AUDIOPHILE Storm LP from 1982. This copy was removed by our collector friend from the shrink wrap, it was autographed by MF in fine black marker, and then returned to the original shrink wrap, which was resealed at the bottom. It's in MINT condition, and beautifully autographed by MF. There's also a photocopy of a Holton caricature of MF enclosed. Groovy! Yours for $35.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #304 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, STORM -- Nautilus NR 57

THIS LOT IS IDENTICAL TO LOT #303 DIRECTLY ABOVE. OUR COLLECTOR FRIEND HAD TWO OF THEM.

ITEM #305 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, A MESSAGE FROM BIRDLAND (SPANISH RELEASE) -- Fresh Sound FSR 558

Here's the 1980s-era Spanish re-issue of the original Roulette LP entitled Message from Birdland. This one has a small drill hole in the cover at upper-left. Otherwise, it's like new. Our friend removed it from the shrink wrap, had it autographed on the front in white marker by MF, then placed it in a protective plastic sleeve. Other than the core hole, it's in MINT condition, with a superb autograph. Without the core hole, this one would easily fetch $35.00. Due to this problem, it's just $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #306 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, A MESSAGE FROM BIRDLAND – Roulette R52027

Here's MF on the original MONO Roulette LP. The cover on this one is pretty nice … just a little surface wear visible front and back and a rubber-stamped name and address on the back. Otherwise, it's in great condition, with solid seams, etc. It's NMINT-. The vinyl is a super clean and nice NMINT. Overall, this copy is NMINT- to NMINT … one of the nicest I've seen. And … it's nicely autographed on the front by MF in thin black marker. Just a super copy, it's yours for $32.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #307 -- MAYNARD FERGUSON, A MESSAGE FROM BIRDLAND -- Roulette SR 52027

Here's MF on the original STEREO Roulette LP. The cover on this one is not the best. There was a cover tear on the front near the top left corner that extends across the spine and onto the back a bit. It's been taped with transparent tape, but it's pretty obvious on the black background cover. The top seam is badly worn and a bit ragged. There's a bit of surface wear visible front and back, and someone wrote a few small numbers on the back in blue ink. At best, this cover is VG -- just average, but to be more accurate I'd have to rate it VG-. There are some definite flaws. The vinyl looks like it is seldom-played, but it's been mishandled and has several scuffs on the surface. On this deep groove record it's not going to affect play significantly, but our collector friend played it and did hear some "clicks" on one track. The really nice thing about this copy is the wonderful signature by MF on the front cover in thin, black marker. Overall, this copy is EX-, but with the nice autograph and the seldom-played vinyl, it's worth the asking price of $20.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #308 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, NEW VINTAGE (ITALIAN RELEASE) – CBS 82282

Here's an interesting LP! It's the Italian version of New Vintage. The cover looks just like the U.S. version, but the catalog number and the labels on the disc are different. The cover on this one has just a few little wrinkles around the edges, but it's still easily NMINT. The vinyl is MINT, never-played. Overall, this copy is NMINT++. And … it's nicely autographed by MF on the front in black marker against the silver-white ice bucket. Superb! Yours for $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #309 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, BODY & SOUL – Blackhawk BKH 50101

Here's Maynard on his great 1986 Blackhawk release. This copy was removed from the shrink wrap, signed by Maynard in white marker on the front, then returned to a new protective plastic sleeve. It's MINT, never-played, and beautifully autographed. Yours for $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #310 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, BODY & SOUL – Blackhawk BKH 50101

Here's Maynard on his great 1986 Blackhawk release. This copy is super clean and nice, with just the absolute faintest hint of wear showing front and back on the cover. It's still NMINT+. The vinyl looks like it may have been never-played, but someone put it in the sleeve carelessly and caused a couple of surface scuffs. To be sure it played OK, our collector friend played that side of the disc, and he said it played flawlessly. So it's NMINT to NMINT+, with the only problem being the surface scuffs. Overall, let's call this copy NMINT+. And … it's beautifully autographed on the front by MF in thin black marker. It's yours for $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #311 -- MAYNARD FERGUSON AND CHRIS CONNOR, DOUBLE EXPOSURE -- Atlantic 8049

Our collector friend found a copy of this great LP in MINT condition, but with a small core hole in the upper left-hand corner. He removed it from the shrink wrap, had MF autograph it nicely in black marker on the front left portion of the cover, then returned it to a clean plastic sleeve. So this is a MINT, autographed copy, with the only detracting factor being the core hole. Normally this would sell for $35.00. With the core hole in the cover, just $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #312 -- MAYNARD FERGUSON AND CHRIS CONNOR, DOUBLE EXPOSURE -- Atlantic 8049

THIS COPY IS ABSOLUTELY IDENTICAL TO THE ONE DIRECTLY ABOVE.

ITEM #313 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, THE MAYNARD FERGUSON YEARS -- Roulette SK-101

Here's the relatively hard-to-find Roulette boxed set of two discs -- sort of a Greatest Hits LP on the Roulette label from the mid-'60s. This one is in STEREO. The boxes on these usually are in very poor condition, and almost always have taped corners or edges. The box on this copy has zero tape repairs. It's completely solid except for one small crack in the edge of the back cover. There's a little surface wear on the box, but overall, it's quite nice -- NMINT-. The vinyl is MINT, never-played -- simply pristine!!! And … it's nicely autographed in thin black marker on the front by MF!!! What a beauty!!! It's yours for $45.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #314 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, THE MAYNARD FERGUSON YEARS -- Roulette SK-101

THIS LOT IS VERY SIMILAR TO THE ONE DIRECTLY ABOVE. Here's the relatively hard-to-find Roulette boxed set of two discs -- sort of a Greatest Hits LP on the Roulette label from the mid-'60s. This one is in STEREO. The boxes on these usually are in very poor condition, and almost always have taped corners or edges. The box on this copy has just one repair -- a neatly taped left edge. It's otherwise completely solid. There's a little surface wear on the box, but overall, it's quite nice. Due to the tape, let's call it EX+. The vinyl is MINT, never-played, but someone did write their name on the labels. Let's call the discs NMINT. It's also nicely autographed in thin white marker on the front by MF!!! What a beauty!!! It's yours for $35.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #315 – VARIOUS ARTISTS, MERCURY 40TH ANNIVERSARY V.S.O.P. ALBUM (JAPANESE RELEASE) -- Mercury 824 116-1

Here's the great 4-LP boxed set of previously unreleased tracks that was mastered direct to disc in Japan and released in 1984. These are very hard to find, and MF is represented on a previously unreleased take of The Roamin' Showman and Taking a Chance on Love. This copy is in the original box, and has the original paper "obi" strip still attached, although it was torn in one spot and carefully taped with clear tape. The cover itself is very nice, with no real problems except that the gold foil label on the front has a few light scuffs on it that can be seen in oblique lighting. Nevertheless, it's a very clean and nice NMINT cover. The inside of the box retains the original booklet insert, as well as the 4 original discs, all of which are in MINT, unplayed condition. They're pure, virgin vinyl, of course! So here we have a NMINT+ copy of a superb, hard-to-find boxed set from Japan. Grab it while you can. $60.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #316 – VARIOUS ARTISTS, THE COMPLETE GEORGE GERSHWIN PORGY AND BESS – Bethlehem 3BP-1

Here's the 3-LP boxed set of the complete Porgy and Bess recordings from 1956. The list of trumpet players, including MF, on this LP reads like the who's who of trumpet players in west coast jazz, with a few east coast cats thrown in for good measure. Just to be clear, this is not the 1956 original release of the recording. Instead, it's the 1975 re-issue. The original lists for $60.00 in the jazz guide, and I've seen it sell for $100.00 before. This re-issue version usually sells for around $45.00 to $50.00. This copy is almost like new. The cover is a clean and nice NMINT+, and the vinyl is MINT, never-played. Just an outstanding copy of this hard-to-find LP set. Don't lose out on this nice copy. It's $45.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #317a -- ELLA FITZGERALD, THE COLE PORTER SONGBOOK -- Verve VE-2-2511

ITEM #317b -- ELLA FITZGERALD, THE RODGERS AND HART SONGBOOK -- Verve VE-2-2519

This is just one lot -- lot #317 -- but it contains TWO double gatefold LPs. Maynard played in the Buddy Bregman band backing Ella on both of these mid-'50s LPs. If you haven't heard them, then you've probably missed two of the finest recordings by Ella. She is just absolutely fabulous on these two albums! These are 1977 re-issues of the original LPs, and they're quite common. Thus, we're offering you BOTH of these double LPs (a total of 4 discs) as one lot. The Cole Porter LP has a clean and nice NMINT to NMINT+ cover (just the faintest hint of record ring wear starting to form on the dark cover) and MINT, never-played vinyl. The Rodgers and Hart LP is in identical condition … nice, NMINT to NMINT+ cover and MINT, never-played vinyl. Together, this set of four LPs is some of the finest recorded music of all time. The pair of LPs is yours for a grand total of $40.00.

ITEM #318 – CLIFFORD BROWN, THE IMMORTAL CLIFFORD BROWN – Limelight LM 2-8201

Here's Maynard with Clifford Brown on a Limelight 1965 compilation double gatefold LP. These are very hard to find! The cover on this one has a little of the typical record ring wear that you see on these light beige covers. It's really not bad, and otherwise the cover is clean and nice. Inside the gatefold a booklet is attached. On this one, the front cover of that booklet is missing, and the booklet has come apart and is loose inside the gatefold. If it wasn't for the damage to this attached booklet, this would be a NMINT- cover. Due to the problem with the little booklet, let's call it just EX-. The vinyl is a clean and nice NMINT. I've seen these sell several times at auction in the $50.00 price range. Due to the damaged booklet on this one, it's just $30.00.

ITEM #319 – BIG BAND RTB WITH AMERICAN GUESTS CLARK TERRY, JOHNNY GRIFFIN, NATHAN DAVIS, MAYNARD FERGUSON, ERNIE WILKINS – RTB 2121719

Folks, this is a RARE LP!!! It's a Yugoslavian LP from the mid 1980s, and it contains two tracks with Maynard from 11/13/68, recording during a date as a special guest wth the RTB Big Band. (I presume this is a Yugoslavian big band.) As you know, Maynard was traveling all over Europe at that time, and laid down tracks in Germany and other European nations. This is one of the sessions that got put on an LP. Maynard solos nicely on two tracks: Sid's Theme and Got the Spirit. The album cover and label credits Sid's Theme to "Villie" Maiden. Yes, that's a "V"!!! This is only the third copy of this LP I've ever held in my hands. They are almost impossible to find here in the U.S., and the European collectors tell me they seldom see one, either. The covers on these are ultra thin and flimsy, and they're almost pure black, and you know what that means! But in this case, there are only some minor creases along the edges, two minor corner bends, and there's just a minimum of surface wear visible. It's a very well preserved cover, and even with the very minor problems, easily deserves a NMINT rating. The vinyl is a very nice NMINT+. Overall, this one is NMINT to NMINT+. And … Maynard autographed it nicely on the front cover in thin, silver marker! Although it's not an absolutely perfect copy, it's quite nice, and is every bit as nice as the one in my personal collection. Our collector friend had to pay a big price to get it, and he reminds me that one sold in an internet auction in February of 2000 for $261.00 plus postage, handling, and insurance. And THAT copy wasn't autographed! This nice autographed copy is yours, postage paid in the U.S., of course, for just $250.00.

ITEM #320 -- MAYNARD FERGUSON, SWINGIN' MY WAY THROUGH COLLEGE -- Roulette R25058

Here's one of the true standards from the MF library. If you don't own this one, then you're missing some of the most listenable and solid tunes from the Roulette era. They include standards such as What's New, Tenderly, and Bye Bye Blackbird. The cover on this copy is super clean and nice, with just two faults … a pea-sized disturbance on the front near the bottom edge (possibly sticker damage, but minor -- only affects the ink on the surface) and the original owner's name written on back. So instead of NMINT, let's call it EX+. The vinyl is a seldom-played NMINT!! Overall, it's NMINT-. And … this copy is beautifully autographed by MF in black marker at upper right on the front cover!!! Except for the minor damage, this clean and nice autographed LP would be worth $35.00+. In this condition it's yours for just $28.00.
