MAJOR COLLECTOR SALE #1 -- THIS SALE CLOSED 7/29/05

ITEM #321 -- MAYNARD FERGUSON, THE WORLD OF MAYNARD FERGUSON (UK RELEASE) -- CBS 64101

Here's the English version of the MF Horn LP. It's got a totally different cover. Maynard is sitting down, leaning against a tree playing his horn, and his faithful steed (with an obviously English saddle) is standing there next to him grazing. I have no idea why the British version had this different cover, but it's cool, and it's MUCH rarer than either of the U.S. versions. The cover on this copy has some sticker damage at upper left -- about the size of a quarter, and just affecting the surface layer. Like most of these UK covers, the cover material is relatively thin, and it's got a little minor creasing around the edges, as well as a bit of edge wear. On the back, at bottom left, there are a number of impressions in the cover from something that was sat on top of the cover and depressed. Overall, it's still a pretty nice looking cover, but these small faults do detract from the condition. Let's call the cover EX-. The vinyl is a clean and nice NMINT. Overall, this copy rates an EX+. And … it's got a super nice MF autograph on the front in black marker! If this one had a bit nicer cover, it would easily be worth $65.00 autographed. Due to the minor cover damage, it's just $45.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #322 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, MAYNARD FERGUSON CONDUCTS THE BIRDLAND DREAMBAND, VOL. 1 & 2 (FRENCH RELEASE) -- RCA Jazz Line PM 43841

Here's Maynard on the French re-issue (double, gatefold LP) of the great Birdland Dreamband sessions from the 1950s. This is an absolute MUST in every serious collection. And this copy is MINT, FACTORY SEALED!!!! Yours for $75.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #323 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, A MESSAGE FROM BIRDLAND -- Roulette R 52027

Here's Maynard on the GREAT Message from Birdland ORIGINAL Roulette MONO LP! This copy is still in the original, sealed shrink wrap after 40+ years!!! The shrink is split a little at bottom center, and this has allowed just a tiny bit of surface wear in that one spot. It's also split a little on the back and there's a little ring wear in that one spot. Both of these are extremely minor deals, but in wanting to be as honest as possible, I felt I should mention them. Still, it's a NMINT+ cover, and the vinyl is, obviously, MINT! Just a super copy -- probably the nicest you'll ever see. Yours for $35.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #324 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, A MESSAGE FROM NEWPORT (SPANISH RELEASE) -- Fresh Sound Re. 17/1

Here's the Spanish re-issue of the Message from Newport LP. This cover on this one would be NMINT to NMINT+, but it's got a core hole at upper left. This reduces the cover to just EX+. The vinyl is MINT, never played!!! Overall, this one is NMINT-. And … it's autographed by MF on the front in black marker! It's yours for $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #325 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, A MESSAGE FROM NEWPORT -- Roulette R-52012

Here's the original, MONO, Roulette recording of the Message from Newport LP. The cover on this copy looks great from the front, with just a bit of surface wear visible. The seams are all intact. On the back, there's a some surface and record ring wear visible, a minor water stain at right, a tiny piece of the back cover paper is missing at bottom left (just the very tip), and someone underlined the names of the musicians on blue ink. I'd rate this cover, which looks NMINT from the front, as just EX- to EX. The vinyl is, unbelievably, MINT, never played!!! So, overall, let's call this one EX+ due to the cover problems. Yours for $22.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #326 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, A MESSAGE FROM NEWPORT (SPANISH RELEASE) – Fresh Sound Re. 17/1

Here's a copy of the Spanish re-issue of the Message from Newport LP. The front paper shows a bit of record ring wear, and there's minor wear on the seams. Some genius took clean tape and taped each of the four corners with it, although there's apparently no need for it. What was he thinking? Preventive maintenance? Sheesh! Also, on the back, someone wrote "Old Record" in blue ink (not even true!) and circled the track "Frame for the Blues" in black ink. Oh, well, all this reduces this cover to just VG+ or EX-. The vinyl is a clean and nice NMINT! Overall, this copy is EX to EX+. And … it's nicely autographed on the front by MF in black marker! Yours for just $22.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #327 -- MAYNARD FERGUSON, NEWPORT SUITE -- Roulette R 52047

Here's MF on the original Mono Roulette LP. Great stuff! The font cover on this one shows some light to moderate surface wear. There's a major seam split at bottom right - about 9" long. The top seam is cracked at upper right -- about an inch. The back cover shows quite a bit of surface wear and some light toning. I'd rate this cover as VG+ to EX-. The vinyl has numerous light surface scratches which translate to some definite background noise on playback. It's EX-. Overall, let's call this copy EX-. But … it's got a VERY nice MF autograph on the front in black marker! Just $20.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #328 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, MAYNARD FERGUSON – Wyncote SW-9023

Here's the Stereo version of the great little Wyncote LP which has Maynard sitting in a director's chair on the front cover. The cover on this one looks like it just came out of the shrink wrap. The only problem is an embossed diamond at upper right. I've seen this before, and I think it was a means of defacing the covers (a cut-out process), but it's almost unnoticeable. Frankly, I wish they would have done this to ALL the items they want to cut-out instead of boring a hole through the cover. Anyway, due to this embossed diamond, let's call the cover NMINT instead of NMINT+. The vinyl is a clean and nice NMINT to NMINT+. And … it's beautifully autographed on the front in black marker by MF! A super nice copy, it's yours for $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #329 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, MESSAGE FROM MAYNARD – Roulette R-52101

Here's my absolute favorite MF album of all time! (No one seems to want to argue the point with me, either!) This is just an absolutely sensational LP!!! The cover on this one shows a bit of ring and surface wear, front and back. There's a little rubbed spot on the bottom seam, just next to the opening slit at right. I'd rate this one as EX to EX+. The vinyl has a few light surface scratches. Our friend played it before sending it to me, and he says there are a few light pops and crackles in places. I'd rate it as EX-. Overall, this is a nice, solid, EX copy. And -- it's got Maynard's autograph on the front in black marker. This nice copy is yours for $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #330 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, MAYNARD '64 – Roulette SR 52107

Here's the relatively rare Maynard '64 LP. These are getting harder and harder to find in recent years! And this is the Stereo version -- rarer than the Mono, in my experience. The cover on this one shows a little surface and record ring wear, front and back. There's also some minor edge wear. There's a super minor little bend on the very tip at upper left, and a tiny bend at bottom right. It's still an EX+ to NMINT- cover. The vinyl is NMINT- to NMINT. Overall, let's call this one NMINT-. And … it's beautifully autographed on the front by MF. It's yours for $32.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #331 -- MAYNARD FERGUSON, MAYNARD '63 -- Roulette R 52090

Here's the great Maynard '63 LP, MONO version. The cover on this one has a bit of surface wear visible on the front, slightly more pronounced wear on the back, and a quarter-sized water spot on the back near the bottom edge. Someone taped the top seam with masking tape. There's also some faint red marks on the back where a written price was mostly, but not completely, removed. So this is definitely not the finest of covers. It's only VG-, at best. The vinyl, on the other hand, is super clean and nice. Our collector friend says it's only been played a few times, and it looks it! NMINT to NMINT+. Overall, this copy is EX. And … it's nicely autographed on the front by MF in black marker. Yours for just $20.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #332 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, LET'S FACE THE MUSIC AND DANCE -- Roulette R 52055

Here's Maynard on the LP that's chock full of standards. I really, really like this LP! The cover on this one has relatively clean and nice front paper, with just a little bit of wear visible. There's a little seam wear, and the bottom seam is split 3" at right. On the back, there's some brownish toning in places. Overall, I'd rate this cover as EX- to EX -- a solid cover, with some small faults. The vinyl is NMINT. Overall, this copy is EX+ -- a very nice, solid copy. Yours for $24.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #333 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, THE BIRDLAND DREAM BAND -- Vik LX-1070

Here's volume 1 of the original Birdland Dream Band LP from the 1950s. These are getting increasingly hard to find. The cover on this copy has some yellowed tape and tape remains all around the three sides. Ouch! It's too bad, too, because the front paper is just about the nicest I've ever seen for this LP. It's got just a hint of surface wear. The back, around the edges, is super yellow from the tape. The rest of the back is pretty clean and nice, except for the number "38" written at upper right. So although it's a really nice looking cover, these flaws drop it down in the GD+ range -- not the best of covers! The vinyl, on the other hand, is easily NMINT!!! How does this happen? A messed up cover and super vinyl? Anyway, it's somewhere I the VG+ to EX- range overall. Maynard was autographing it in gold ink on the front when the pen broke and caused the "Fe" in "Ferguson" to be botched. What else could go wrong??? Still, this one is easily worth $20.00, just for the vinyl, if nothing else. Have a nice cover and want a nice LP to go in it? Or looking for a copy to tape or place on CD ROM? This is the one! Just $20.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #334 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, TRUMPET RHAPSODY -- BASF MPS MB 20662

Here's the great Trumpet Rhapsody LP, which, if you don't know, is a re-release of Maynard '69. The cover on this one has some noticeable record ring wear, both front and back, and a little wear on the seams, but there are no splits or real problems. I'd rate the cover as EX+. The vinyl was just played by the Major Collector, and he felt it was at least NMINT-. I'd have to agree; maybe even NMINT. Overall, this copy is EX++. And … it's nicely autographed by Maynard on the front in silver ink. Yours for $22.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #335 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, MF Horn 3 -- Columbia KC 32403

Here's Maynard's great effort from the 1970s. The cover has a bit of surface wear, front and back, but it's not too bad. I'd rate it as NMINT-. The vinyl is MINT, never-played!!!! Overall, this copy is NMINT. And … it's nicely autographed by MF on the front in black marker. A super copy, it's yours for $20.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #336 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, MF HORN AND MF HORN 2 – Columbia CG 33660

Here's a copy of Columbia double gatefold re-issue LP from the 1970s. These typically have terrible record ring wear, but this copy has virtually none. The cover is easily NMINT+! And the vinyl is MINT, never-played. Overall, it's NMINT++! And … it's beautifully autographed on the front by MF. Yours for $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #337 -- MAYNARD FERGUSON, STRATOSPHERIC -- Mercury EMS-2-406

Here's MF on the 1970s double gatefold re-issue LP of a number of tracks from the EmArcy days. These are a MUST in every MF collection -- stunning material! The cover on this one is super clean and nice, with just a very light, quarter-size discoloration on the front from a price sticker and a faint hint of ring wear in a couple of spots. The back cover has a miniscule bend in the bottom corner -- very faint. Even with this small problems, it's easily a NMINT- cover, tending toward NMINT. The vinyl has a couple of light scuffs, but the discs play fine. They're NMINT-. Overall, this is a nice, solid, NMINT- copy. And it's nicely autographed by MF on the front cover. Yours for $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #338 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, COLOR HIM WILD – Mainstream 56031

Here's the Mono version of the great Color Him Wild LP. When's the last time you listened to this one? If it's been a while, I encourage you to pull out a copy and give it a spin! MF was just in his absolute prime during this era. The cover on this one has bends at lower left and lower right. The front paper is like new -- pristine! The seams and tight and undamaged, but the backing paper shows some light staining and wear. I'd rate this cover as EX. The vinyl has a single light scuff on it. It's NMINT- to NMINT. Overall, this copy is EX+. And … it's perfectly autographed by MF in thin silver ink on the front! Really a nice copy, it's $24.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #339 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, DIMENSIONS 1955 – Trip TLP-5507

Here's the 1970s Trip re-issue of the 1955 Dimensions LP. The covers on these are black, and they typically have moderate to heavy record ring wear. The copy has virtually none. The only flaws are just a bit of edge wear and a small, rectangular spot on the front cover that's a little dull from a sticker removal. You can hardly see it, except in oblique lighting. I'd rate this cover as NMINT- to NMINT. The vinyl is MINT, never-played. Overall, this copy is NMINT to NMINT+. And, MF autographed it on the front. This is a sort of unique autograph. He wrote the signature very small in the one small whitish area on the front cover. Very different, and highly collectible. This copy is yours for $24.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #340 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, MF HORN – Columbia C 30466

As you probably know, this cover came in two flavors. The original, from 1970, is called the "stool" cover, because MF is sitting in a business suit on a white stool on the front cover. This copy is indeed the early "stool" cover. These typically have a lot of record ring wear on the covers, and this one is no exception. There's definite ring wear, front and back. There's also a little faded spot at top dead center. I'd rate this cover as above average, but flawed -- EX-. The vinyl is a clean and nice NMINT! Overall, let's call this one EX+. And … it's got a pristine MF autograph on the front in thin black marker. One of the nicest, clearest autographs I've seen. It's yours for $20.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #341 -- MAYNARD FERGUSON, THE BIRDLAND DREAM BAND VOLUME 2 -- Vik LX-1077

These original Birdland Dream Band LPs on Vik are getting harder and harder to find. This copy has quite a bit of surface wear on the front cover (mainly visible on the white area of the cover), an 8" seam split at upper right, and a 1/2" seam split at lower right. On the back, there's a small "x" in ink at upper left, and it's been rubber-stamped "NOT FOR SALE". The back shows some surface wear and slight toning, as well. I'd rate the cover as VG+ -- just a fraction above average. The vinyl, on the other hand, is really nice. It has a few very light surface scuffs, and one visible surface scratch, but on this deep grove LP, it can't be heard. The Collector played it and says it sounds almost like new. I'd rate it as NMINT-. Overall, this copy is somewhere in the EX range. And … Maynard autographed it nicely on the front with gold ink against the brown background. It looks great!!! Normally selling in the $55.00 range for a NMINT copy, due to the cover problems, this copy is yours for just $35.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #342 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, STRAIGHTAWAY JAZZ THEMES -- Roulette SR 52076

Here's Maynard on the great TV racing show-inspired LP. This is the STEREO version. The cover on this one has a bit of surface and record ring wear visible front and back, but the seams are nice and tight, and it's an otherwise undamaged cover. I'd rate it as EX+. The vinyl has a few scuffs and light scratches on side A. The collector played it and says it's fine, with just a few slight crackles in a spot or two. It's likewise EX+. Overall, it's a nice, solid, EX+ copy. And … Maynard autographed this one very nicely on the front in black marker. It's yours for $30.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #343 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, THE WORLD OF MAYNARD FERGUSON -- Roulette R 52110

Here's perhaps the hardest of the Roulette LPs to find. I'm not sure why, but this one is just seldom seen. The cover on this copy has relatively clean and nice front paper, with just a little surface wear visible. There's a piece of clear tape covering about half of the bottom seam. The back likewise has some light surface and record ring wear. Overall, I'd rate this cover as EX. The vinyl has quite a lot of scuffs and light scratches visible. Our friend played it, and he says there are some definite background noise issues on the softer passages and in between the cuts. I'd rate this vinyl as just VG -- average, at best. Overall, this copy is in the VG+ or EX- range. The saving grace is the beautiful MF autograph on the front cover. It's in white ink against the dark background, and is beautifully executed. $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #344 – PETE RUGOLO, MUSIC FROM OUT OF SPACE -- Mercury SR 60118

This is the relatively rare Pete Rugolo STEREO LP which has Maynard on a number of tracks. The front cover has Rugolo donning a space suit, and as a result, general record collectors go NUTS for these LPs. I've seen them priced for $60.00 in record stores. The cover on this copy does have some surface wear on the front, but it's almost invisible due to the dark color of the cover and the excellent lamination that was applied at the factory. The back, which is mostly white, does show quite a bit of wear, and there's a bit of water staining at the top. However, the seams are nice and tight, and it's a generally nice cover. It rates AT LEAST an EX-, but EX would probably be more fair. The vinyl has some scuffs and surface scratches. Our friend played it and says there are a few light pops and crackles, and some background noise can be heard between tracks. It's somewhere in the EX range, as well. Overall, let's call this one EX. It's a nice, solid copy, and it's priced at $35.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #345 – VARIOUS ARTISTS, ALL THE HITS WITH ALL THE STARS VOL. 6 -- Wyncote W-9113

This LP is a Wyncote compilation that has MF on the track Danny Boy. It's a very hard LP to find! The cover on this one has a 7" seam split at upper right. It would have split more, but there's a bit of yellowed (formerly clear) tape at top center. There's also a 7" seam split at lower right. There's some wrinkling in the cover paper at upper right, and a bit of surface wear, as well. The back shows some definite cover wear. I'd rate this cover as just GD … a full notch below average. The vinyl has some scuffs and light surface scratches. It plays with some definite background noise in places. It's just VG. Overall, this copy is GD+ to VG-. I've seen these sell for as much as $55.00. This one is just $25.00.
THIS ITEM FAILED TO SELL.

ITEM #346 – MAYNARD FERGUSON, HIP TWIST / MARIA – Roulette R-4421

Here's a 45 RPM 7" single from the late 1950s. It's the type with the words "RADIO STATION COPY" imprinted on the label. Condition of the labels is SUPER -- like new! The vinyl is NMINT+! It's well worth the asking price! $55.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #347 -- STAN KENTON, ONE NIGHT STAND WITH STAN KENTON IN 1951 -- Joyce LP-1070

Here's MF with the Kenton band from a concert recorded at the Hollywood Palladium in March of '51. The cover would be in great condition, but there are all kinds of brownish toning spots all over it! Looks like the glue they used reacted with something in the environment where this one was stored. The result is a very blotchy looking cover. Due to this problem, it can only be rated as VG. The vinyl is a seldom-played NMINT. Overall, this one is EX. Normally selling for $50.00 or more, due to the cover problems, it's yours for just $25.00.
SORRY, SOLD!!!

ITEM #348 – STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA WITH CHARLIE PARKER AND DIZZY GILLESPIE, KENTON AND BIRD – Jazz Supreme JS 703
