Maynard Ferguson Live Performances on CDRs

MAYNARD FERGUSON WITH THE DECASTRO SISTERS FROM THE FILM SWINGIN' AND SINGIN', DECEMBER 18, 1956 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his Dream Band were the featured orchestra in the Universal International musical short film Swingin' and Singin', released in March 1957. This CDR contains two tracks from that film with the band backing the DeCastro Sisters: With My Eyes Wide Open I'm Dreaming and Birth of the Blues. Like many film soundtrack transcriptions, it lacks much of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but otherwise, it's really cool and a definitely rare MF performance.

This is a commercial radio broadcast, and it includes the tracks Introduction/Blue Birdland, Love Walked In, Jeepers Creepers, My Funny Valentine, Imagination, The Song is You, and Blue Birdland/Announcements. MAYNARD FERGUSON, CANADIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION MUSIC MAKERS '59 TELEVISION SHOW EXCERPTS, TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, OCTOBER 16, 1958 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard appeared on this Canadian television program, broadcast on October 16, 1958, even though the show was called "Music '59." Apparently, it was called "Music '58" until October of 1958, when it switched to "Music '59." The precise recording date is unknown, but it was probably a week or two earlier. The host, Jack Kane, mentions that Maynard had recorded two albums with him that summer. (We're still debating what those two albums might be.) The band backing Maynard is the Canadian show band, not his own group. They're surprisingly "tight!" Tracks include Tenderly, Well, Get It!, and Summertime (partial). The swing number is one I've not heard before, and that makes it probably a one-of-a-kind recording for MF, and thus a must-have for every serious MF collection. This is a short recording, around 8 minutes, but it's historically very significant, and the recording quality is quite good.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $7.50.

MAYNARD FERGUSON, LIVE AT BIRDLAND, NEW YORK, NEW YORK, CBS RADIO BROADCAST, DECEMBER 5, 1958 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his big band are heard here performing live from Birdland in New York City. This is a commercial radio broadcast, and as such, the fidelity is better than some of the other live recordings. It includes the tracks Blue Birdland, Red Hill Romp (Sea Isle Stomp), B.J.'s Back in Town, Tenderly, and My Man Chopin. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but otherwise, it's great!
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $12.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON, LIVE AT BIRDLAND, BANDSTAND USA BROADCAST, JANUARY 10, 1959 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

MAYNARD FERGUSON, CANADIAN BROADCASTING SYSTEM, TIMEX PRESENTS THE CANADIAN ALL-STAR JAZZ SHOW (EXCERPTS), TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, JUNE 2, 1959 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard was invited to take part in this Canadian TV show with an all-star Canadian big band. He is featured on three tracks which are captured here: Great Guns, 'Round Midnight, and T-Mex for Timex. The special thing here is the T-Mex for Timex track, which is apparently a tune composed just for this show. I don't believe it's available anywhere else, which makes this a must-have for all serious MF collectors. The fidelity is just so-so on this one. It sounds like it was recorded a bit too high in places, causing some minor distortion. Still, it's an important, if short, recording, and is priced well due to the short duration.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $7.50.

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard appears on this Canadian Television show with a broadcast date of January 18, 1960. The precise recording date is unknown, but it was probably a week or two earlier. The band backing Maynard is the show band, not his own group, but they're a group of Canadian all-star performers -- top notch. Other performers include pianist Barbara Carroll, singer Allan Blye, and harmonica player Johnny Puleo horsing around and providing comic relief. Present here are parts of the program in which MF performed. Tunes include I've Got You Under My Skin, It Had to Be You, Rodgers and Hart Medley, Where's Teddy, and Summertime. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but otherwise, it's great! What's amazing is that it even still exists! This is a very short recording of only about 12 minutes. It's priced accordingly.

MAYNARD FERGUSON, CANADIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION THE MUSIC MAKERS TELEVISION SHOW (EXCERPTS), TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, MARCH 29, 1961 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard appears on this Canadian Television show with a recording date of March 29, 1961. He was the guest host and conductor for the evening. There are just three tunes: Sound of the Blues, Jane's Jump, and Summertime. Jack Kane passed away from cancer two days earlier on March 27 at the age of 36, so this special tribute was quickly put together with MF leading the orchestra, which was the show band, not his own group. Present here are the parts of the program in which MF performed. Research indicates that this show was probably broadcast on April 3, 1961. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but otherwise, it's great! What's amazing is that it even still exists! This is a very short recording of only about 6 minutes. It's priced accordingly.

The precise recording date is uncertain, but based on the information we have, a logical guess is around 8/19/61. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but since it was a radio show broadcast, it's quite good.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $15.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE RED HILL INN, PENNSAUKEN, NEW JERSEY, DECEMBER 31, 1961 - JANUARY 1, 1962 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 4 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. This is an amazing recording. It includes sets from New Year's Eve 1961 and New Year's Night 1962 and pretty-much fills four CDRs. Much of the banter between Maynard, the band, and the audience has been retained. The band performs live on multiple tracks including Go East Young Man, Have You Met Miss Jones, Got the Spirit, Jazz Baris, The Pharaoh, Hey There, Where's Teddy, Give Me the Simple Life, Four, Pretty Little Nieda, Blue Birdland, Oleo, Auld Lang Syne, BJ's Back in Town, Maria, This is My Lucky Day, Frame for the Blues, And We Listened, "X" Stream, Mimi, Reflection, The Fox Hunt, One for Otis, Round About the Blues, Old Man River (Partial), Morgan Point, and Ole. A few of the tracks appear twice. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but otherwise, it's quite good and captures an important two nights in the history of the band.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $45.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON, CANADIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION PARADE TELEVISION SHOW EXCERPTS APRIL 15, 1962, MAY 8, 1963 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here are excerpts from a CBC television show entitled Parade. From May 8, 1963, we have the tracks Ole and (once again) Sweet Georgia Brown. Finally, from an unknown date, the track Tenderly. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but since it was a television show broadcast, it's quite good. NOTE: There are copies of this performance being swapped out in the MF universe with the misinformation that these tracks are from 1961. Please make sure if you have a copy that is mislabeled you correct it to prevent future misinformation from being spread around.

MAYNARD FERGUSON, LIVE AT THE STARLIGHT BALLROOM, HERSHEY PARK, HERSHEY, PENNSYLVANIA, AUGUST 31, 1963 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his Roulette-era big band are heard here performing live from the Starlight Ballroom. It includes the tracks Blue Birdland, Almost Like Being in Love, At the Sound of the Trumpet, Maria, Cherokee, and Take the 'A' Train. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording. This is some sort of second generation recording with fairly poor fidelity. IMPORTANT QUESTION. This recording was captured by the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service on an LP for playback to service members later under their One Night Stand title, but it's unclear at this time which four-digit ONS number applies -- probably 5989, but one source says 5985. Further research will be required to nail this down. DO ANY OF YOU HAVE GOOD INFORMATION ABOUT WHICH ONE NIGHT STAND NUMBER APPLIES TO THIS RECORDING?

Included are the tracks Blue Birdland, Almost Like Being in Love, At the Sound of the Trumpet, Maria, and One O'clock Jump. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but in this case, this is a second generation recording and there is significant distortion in places due to the recording level being too high. However, due to its historic significance, this recording has been preserved despite these flaws. Priced accordingly.

MAYNARD FERGUSON, CANADIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION PARADE JAZZ TELEVISION SHOW, FEBRUARY 6, 1964 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard led an all-star Canadian big band on this CBC Parade Jazz television program. The recording date is unknown but February 6, 1964 is the broadcast date. Maynard was in Montreal with his own band the week prior, so it's likely he traveled to Toronto during that week to record this program. Maynard himself is featured on four of the tracks, Joe Williams is featured on four, and Moe Koffman is featured on one. The tracks include Watermelon Man, Jump for Joy, C Jam Blues, One O'clock Jump, Danny Boy, Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams (And Dream Your Troubles Away), The Sound of the Night, More than Likely, and Private Eye Blues. This is a really enjoyable CDR. The fidelity is quite good for a 1964 recording given that it was professionally recorded for television. I got a kick out of hearing Private Eye Blues, which is really interesting. Highly recommended.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE IN BILOXI, MISSISSIPPI, MARCH 24, 1964 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his Roulette-era big band performing live on a 2-CDR set. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but otherwise, it's quite nice.

MAYNARD FERGUSON, CANADIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION SHOW OF THE WEEK: NEW DIRECTIONS ON JAZZ TELEVISION SHOW (EXCERPTS), TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, SEPTEMBER 28, 1964 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard appears on this Canadian Television show with a broadcast date of September 28, 1964. There are just two tunes: Almost Like Being in Love and People. Various acts were featured on the show, including MF with his orchestra. Present here are excerpts of the show in which MF performed. Of note is the fact that the arrangement of “People” has a vocal group performing with MF and the band – perhaps the only known recording of this track by MF with vocalists. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but otherwise, it's great! What's amazing is that it even still exists, and it's MIND BLOWING that he had a vocal group performing with him on People! This is a very short recording of only about 6 1/2 minutes. It's priced accordingly.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE KENT SUITE, MANCHESTER, ENGLAND, OCTOBER 17, 1967 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. This is a really unique recording. It's also known as "An Evening with Maynard." MF is backed by a jazz trio on two tunes: Over the Rainbow and Now's the Time. There is a third track on the CD which is a question-and-answer session Maynard held with the audience. He talks about his horn and how it's constructed to meet his requirements, talks about how "West Coast Jazz" was primarily made up of "East Coast Musicians," takes a question from the audience about playing the Titans Symphony with Bernstein and what that involved, etc. This CD is worth the price for the conversation alone, but the two musical tracks are great, as well. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but otherwise, it's quite nice.

Maynard and his English big band performing live on 6 tracks including Dancing Nitely, Maria, Gary Cox (Morgan's Organ), Danny Boy, The Fox Hunt, and The Spirit of Club 43 (Got the Spirit). I presume this was recorded at Manchester's Club 43 for later broadcast on the radio. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but otherwise, it's quite nice.

MAYNARD FERGUSON ON THE DEE TIME BBC TELEVISION SHOW, FEBRUARY 17, 1968 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here's MF with Simon Dee on his Dee Time TV show. Maynard and the band perform Ole followed by an interview with Dee. Very interesting, as he talks about recently coming to England and the motivation for doing so. Since this is a transcription of the audio from a TV broadcast, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but otherwise, it's quite nice.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE ON THE BBC RADIO ONE JAZZ CLUB 'ALL STAR" PROGRAM, HOST HUMPHREY LYTTELTON, APRIL 24, 1968 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here's MF and his early English band performing live for a BBC broadcast on station Radio One. Humphrey Lyttelton, the host, chats between tracks, including Take the "A" Train, And We Listened, Alfie, Italian Sweet, and Go East Young Man. Given that this was a special taping for BBC radio, there was great mike placement and excellent recording equipment. While not studio quality, it's close.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE WITH THE GUSTAV BROM ORCHESTRA AT THE PRAGUE INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL, PRAGUE, CZECHOSLOVAKIA, NOVEMBER 20, 1968 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here's MF on a program that was recorded for television in Czechoslovakia. He was the guest artist with the Gustav Brom Orchestra at this jazz festival. This was all happening during a time when we knew very little about Maynard's whereabouts here in the U.S. Tracks include Take the 'A' Train, Maria (from West Side Story), Got the Spirit, Send for Me, and Alright, Okay, You Win. Although the first three tracks will be familiar to most of you, the last two are definitely one-offs. Given that this was a special taping for television, there was great mike placement and excellent recording equipment. While not studio quality, it's quite good. And Maynard was absolutely in his prime!! Really amazing that this was captured for posterity.

Tracks include Blue Birdland, Take the "A" Train, The Blues (Morgan's Organ), Watermelon Man, Somewhere (from West Side Story), The Fox Hunt, Italian Suite, Got the Spirit, Go East Young Man, and Dancing Nitely. This concert was taped for a television broadcast, so it was well-mic'd and properly recorded. While not studio quality, it's close.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE MANCHESTER PLAYHOUSE, MANCHESTER, ENGLAND 1969 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here's MF with his 1969-era English big band. Maynard and the band perform on the tracks Almost Like Being in Love, Alfie, Soft Winds, Meet a Cheetah, and Italian Suite. Maynard is very subdued and serious in announcing the tunes, almost as if he's in a classical music setting. Perhaps this is what he was coached to do by the BBC. The music is anything BUT subdued -- truly excellent. Italian Suite alone is worth the price of admission. Since this is a transcription of the audio from a radio broadcast, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but otherwise, it's quite nice. Some of the tracks are almost studio quality.

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. MF appeared on the CBC television program In the Mood in early 1972. This is the session where the program was recorded. Tracks include In the Mood Theme Music, Take the 'A' Train, Blue Birdland, MacArthur Park, MF Interview, Bridge Over Troubled Water, and Hey Jude. This isn't music studio quality in terms of the recording, but it's quite good since it was taped for television. Some great solo work by all concerned and I can definitely recommend this one.

Tracks include Blue Birdland, Give it One, Nice 'N Juicy, Bridge Over Troubled Water, MacArthur Park, Maria, Left Bank Express, Two for Otis, Love There from the Valachi Papers, The Fox Hunt, Got the Spirit, and Hey Jude. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but otherwise, it's quite nice. In fact, I can highly recommend this one as having excellent fidelity. The band was especially "tight" for this performance. And Maynard tells a story about being in that same auditorium in 1953 and how he got his name in the newspaper as a movie star! His banter with the audience is great here. This one is a must-have in my opinion!

Here are Maynard and the band performing live on eight tracks including Blue Birdland, Left Bank Express, Chameleon, La Fiesta, MacArthur Park, I Can't Get Started, Got the Spirit, and Hey Jude. Unfortunately, the end of La Fiesta and beginning of MacArthur Park are missing, as well as the end of Hey Jude. Very sloppy! But it's better to have the vast majority of the performance than to discard it all because of these flaws. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording. Although it's a double CDR, it's priced as a single due to the issues with the tracks.

Maynard and his big band performing live on Blue Birdland, Left Bank Express, Chameleon, The Fox Hunt, Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, La Fiesta, MacArthur Park, I Can't Get Started, Got the Spirit, Maynard on Soprano Sax, and Hey Jude (Partial). Of particular interest is Maynard on Soprano Sax. Prior to playing Hey Jude, Maynard pulled out his soprano sax and started goofing around, playing several vignettes from popular tunes including at least one that he did with the Kenton orchestra, and the band tries to follow along. Hilarious! Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording.

Being a television show recording, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a music recording studio, but otherwise, it's quite nice, and is better than most of these types of recordings.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT ARCHBISHOP ALTER HIGH SCHOOL, KETTERING, OHIO, DECEMBER 17, 1974 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his big band performed live on Blue Birdland, Left Bank Express, Chameleon, Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, Superbone Meets the Badman, La Fiesta, MacArthur Park, I Can't Get Started, and Hey Jude. This is not a great recording. There are some cut-outs in a few places and little bits of some tracks are missing, and the editing is a bit rough. On the other hand, the band and Maynard were SPECTACULAR at this engagement. MF's high register is tip top, band soloists were extraordinary that evening, etc. I wish I could have been there in person to hear this one! Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it's decent. Due to the little problems with the recording, this one is priced a bit less than usual.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE CONRAD HILTON HOTEL, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, DECEMBER 20, 1974 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his big band performed live on Nice 'n Juicy, Left Bank Express, Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, MacArthur Park, Got the Spirit, Christmas for Moderns, and Hey Jude. The editing on this is a little crude, with applause broken off abruptly at the end of each track. And, like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it's decent. Due to the minor editing glitches, this one is priced a bit less than usual.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY, DEKALB, ILLINOIS, MARCH 25, 1975 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his big band performing live on Blue Birdland (Partial), Left Bank Express, Chameleon, Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, Two for Otis, La Fiesta, MacArthur Park (Partial), Fruit of the Loon, Superbone Meets the Badman, I'm Getting Sentimental Over You, Got the Spirit, Hey Jude, and Give it One. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it's a typical recording from this genre.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT LOS ALTOS HIGH SCHOOL, HACIENDA HEIGHTS, CALIFORNIA, APRIL 27, 1975 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his big band performed live at Los Altos High School on 12 tracks including Blue Birdland, Left Bank Express, Chameleon, Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, Two for Otis, La Fiesta, MacArthur Park, Fruit of the Loon, I Can't Get Started, The Fox Hunt, Got the Spirit, and Hey Jude. This one definitely lacks the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording. It must have been recorded at an improperly high level and there is distortion heard in the louder passages. A few of the tracks are slightly truncated, as well. I've priced this one at rock bottom due to the problems with the recording. Still, it's amazing that this concert recording has even survived. You should get this one for historical purposes, not a great listening experience.

Maynard and his big band performed live at Carnegie Hall on 6 tracks including La Fiesta, Frame for the Blues, Chameleon, Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, Got the Spirit, and the Tommy Medley. This one definitely lacks the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it’s acceptable.

This one lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it’s pretty good. It's average or slightly better for this type of recording.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT DRAKE UNIVERSITY, DES MOINES, IOWA, FEBRUARY 14, 1976 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON CDR)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his big band performed live at Drake University on Blue Birdland, Give it One, Primal Scream, Two for Otis, Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, I'm Getting Sentimenal Over You, and Pagliacci. It lacks the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording. It was probably recorded on a hand-held recording device by an audience member. It's average for this type of recording. There are two or three spots where bits of songs were cut off. Of course, it's miraculous that this even exists, at all.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT ST. HELENA HIGH SCHOOL, ST. HELENA, CALIFORNIA, APRIL 7, 1976 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON CDR)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his big band performed live at St. Helena High School on Blue Birdland, Give it One, Primal Scream, Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, Two for Otis, Chala Nata, and Blue Birdland (again). This is a REALLY INTERESTING performance. It's quite unlike others from this time period. Two for Otis actually begins with scat singing of the melody! Then Chala Nata is an extended 24-minute version unlike any I've heard before. It sort of made me think someone was dropping some acid that night, but frankly, I really like this version!!! It's very creative and the arrangement strays a great deal from the original version on the MF Horn album. This recording lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording. It sounds like an audience recording on a portable device. But it's not bad, and it's really interesting. I highly recommend this one.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT AICHI-KEN KENSO-KAIKEN, NAGOYA, JAPAN, JUNE 12, 1976 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

Maynard and his big band performed live in Japan on the following tunes: Blue Birdland, Give it One, Chameleon, Two for Otis, I Can't Get Started, Tommy Medley, MacArthur Park, Primal Scream, Gospel John, and Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me. This one lacks the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it’s better than the usual CDR recording -- really good!!!

MAYNARD FERGUSON ON THE DINAH! TELEVISION PROGRAM, CBS TELEVISION CITY, HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA, JUNE 23, 1976 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his big band performed Pagliacci, Primal Scream, Something (with Dinah Shore on vocals), and Blue Birdland during this TV performance. There was also a nice interview with MF in which impressionist Rich Little pitched in. This one lacks the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it’s better than most, with only a little distortion in a few passages. NOTE: 6/23/76 was the taping date; 8/30/76 was the broadcast date.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $7.50.

Maynard and his big band performed live at Carnegie Hall on 7 tracks including Blue Birdland, Give it One, Primal Scream, Two for Otis, 'Round Midnight, Chameleon, Pagliacci, and Blue Birdland. This one lacks the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it’s better than the usual CDR -- quite nice.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $15.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT HOGAN HIGH SCHOOL, VALLEJO, CALIFORNIA, MARCH 27, 1977 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his big band performed live at Hogan High School on the tracks Blue Birdland, Give it One, Primal Scream, Theme from Star Trek, Feelings, Conquistador, MacArthur Park, Chameleon, Gonna Fly Now, Two for Otis, and Pagliacci. There was also an opening number by the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps. (MF does not play on that track, but it's preserved here for historical purposes.) This was obviously an audience recording on a portable recording device, so it lacks most of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording. It's marred by a lot of loud clapping and cheering by the audience and one apparently inebriated audience member who yells out several times between tracks. It's not terrible, but it's annoying in those places. As a result, this one is priced a bit less than usual.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE 5TH ANNUAL CANADIAN STAGE BAND FESTIVAL, TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, MAY 22, 1977 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his big band performed live at this festival on 8 tracks including Give it One, Primal Scream, Feelings, Conquistador, Gonna Fly Now, Airegin, I Can't Get Started, and Blue Birdland. It was taped as a television show by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and presumably was then recorded by someone over the airwaves when it aired. It lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording. It's fairly good, but it's marred by some weird fluttering distortion on about half of Airegin and some other distortion in places, especially on I Can't Get Started. It's not terrible, but it's annoying in those places. As a result, this one is priced less than usual.

MAYNARD FERGUSON ON THE MIKE DOUGLAS TELEVISION PROGRAM, JULY 12, 1977 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his big band performed on the Mike Douglas television program on 4 tracks including Conquistador, an MF Interview, Gonna Fly Now, and Theme from Star Trek. It was taped as a television show and presumably was then recorded by someone over the airwaves when it aired. It lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording. It's fairly good, but it's marred by some distortion in a few places. It's not too bad -- just a little annoying in a couple of places. Plus, it's shorter than usual. As a result, it's priced less than most of these CDRs.

Maynard and his big band performed live at the Van Wentzel Performing Arts Hall on the tracks including Blue Birdland, Give it One, Birdland, Over the Rainbow, Gonna Fly Now, Stella by Starlight, and Pagliacci. This recording lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it’s really very good. It sounds like it was recorded off the house sound system, not a portable device.

MAYNARD FERGUSON ON THE MIKE DOUGLAS TELEVISION PROGRAM, JUNE 14, 1978 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his big band performed on the Mike Douglas television program on 6 tracks including Birdland, Maria (Disco Version), an MF Interview (with Jerry Lewis), C Jam Blues (in Bb with Jerry Lewis), You Stepped Out of a Dream, and Theme from Star Wars. It was taped as a television show and the fidelity is quite good on this one, although, like most of these second-generation recordings, it's not studio quality. Still, a very nice recording and it's worth it just to hear Jerry Lewis and Maynard goofing around on trumpet.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $10.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE ONTARIO PLACE FORUM, TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, JUNE 30, 1978 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

Maynard and his big band performed live at the Ontario Place Forum on the following tracks: Blue Birdland, Gonna Fly Now (Theme from "Rocky"), Birdland, Carnival, Stella by Starlight, Pagliacci, and Blue Birdland. The Stella by Starlight track is really amazing! This one lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it’s really quite nice.

Maynard and his big band performed live at the Newport Jazz Festival on the following tracks: Blue Birdland, Give it One, Birdland, Over the Rainbow, Gonna Fly Now (Theme from "Rocky"), Stella by Starlight, Pagliacci, and Blue Birdland. This one lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it's SUPER nice! I'm sure it was professionally recorded off the festival sound board, and it's near-studio quality. If you generally don't like the quality of these CDRs, don't worry about this one. It's great!

This one lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it’s really quite nice.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT KLEINHANS MUSIC HALL, BUFFALO, NEW YORK, OCTOBER 22, 1978 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his big band performed live in Buffalo on the following tracks: Blue Birdland, Give it One, Birdland, Theme from Battlestar Galactica, M.F. Carnival, Stella by Starlight, Pagliacci, and Gonna Fly Now. It lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording. It's an average specimen of one of these live recordings. It's OK, but not super high quality. Still, worthwhile.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $15.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON, AKRON, OHIO, OCTOBER 29, 1978 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his big band performed live at The University of Akron on the following tracks: Blue Birdland, Give it One, Primal Scream, Over the Rainbow, Stella by Starlight, Theme from Battlestar Galactica, M.F. Carnival, Birdland (Partial), and Pagliacci (Partial). The last two tracks are just fragments, apparently because this was recorded on a cassette recorder and the tape was not long enough for the whole performance. But there is some absolutely AMAZING playing by MF on those two fragments, so I kept them with the rest of the recording. This one definitely lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording. Due to the fact that there are only fragments of the two tracks, this one is priced a bit lower than usual.

Maynard and his big band performed live at Mills High School on the following tracks: Blue Birdland, Give it One, Gabriel, Airegin, Theme from Star Trek, Stella by Starlight, Happy Birthday Stan, Pagliacci / Blue Birdland, Gonna Fly Now / Blue Birdland. This one lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it’s really quite good.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT DISNEYLAND, ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA, MAY 27, 1979 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his big band performed three sets live at Disneyland on the following tracks: Blue Birdland, Give it One, Birdland, Gabriel, Stella by Starlight, Gonna Fly Now, Theme from Star Trek, Chameleon, Airegin, MF Carnival, I Can't Get Started, Dayride, and Pagliacci (Partial). This one lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it’s really quite good. Maynard speaks pretty-much before each track, there are five different versions of Blue Birdland, two of Stella by Starlight, and the band and MF were in great shape for this performance. Quite worthwhile.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $25.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE MILLER JAZZ OASIS STAGE, SUMMERFEST, MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, JULY 5, 1979 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his big band performed at Summerfest on the following tracks: Blue Birdland, Give it One, Birdland, Gabriel, Stella by Starlight, Rocky II Disco, Dayride, Chameleon, Airegin, and Pagliacci. This one lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording. It appears to have been taped by an audience member, and there's a lot of loud clapping and crowd noise, but it’s fairly decent. I think the highlight for me is this particular version of Pagliacci. I'm not sure I've heard it like this before, and generally I'm not a big fan of this one, but in this case, it's different. The entire trumpet section gets involved, and there is some brilliant trumpet playing. Both the section and MF were amazing on this one, with some of the best technique and some of the most stratospheric playing you're ever going to hear. Amazing, and really a worthwhile recording.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE ON THE WPVI AM/PHILADELPHIA MORNING TELEVISION SHOW, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, MARCH 14, 1980 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here's MF appearing on a morning television show in Philadelphia during a snow storm. It's basically a 19-minute interview with MF. He talks about getting his first trumpet as a child, his philosophy about always keeping the music fresh, his current CBS/Columbia album HOT, and the experience of working with Sylvester Stallone on the Rocky 2 recording. There's also a clip from PBS of MF and the band playing Gonna Fly Now and a couple of impromptu improvisations by MF. It some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it’s really quite good.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $7.50.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE ONTARIO PLACE FORUM, TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, JUNE 20, 1980 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his big band performed live at the Ontario Place Forum on the following tracks: Blue Birdland, Give it One, Birdland, Gabriel, and Chameleon. There are some interesting things about this one. First of all, Give it One is played at perhaps the fastest tempo I've ever heard. It's so fast some of the band can't keep up with the pace. I find it annoying, but it's pretty amazing, at the same time. The real highlight of this one, in my mind, is the fact that trombonist Kenny Crane picks up his tuba on Chameleon. I have never heard Chameleon with such a vibrant, pulsing bass as can be heard on this track. It blew me away! Then, in the middle of the piece, he SOLOS beautifully in the higher tuba register. To me, this recording is worth the price just to get this version of Chameleon, which is a very mature and different version than one you would have heard earlier. This CDR lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, and there's some hum to be heard in the very soft passages, but overall, it's not too bad.

Here's Maynard and his band on four tracks including Blue Birdland, Give it One, Birdland, and Everybody Loves the Blues. MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE NORTH SEA JAZZ FESTIVAL, THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS, JULY 11, 1980 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his big band performed live at The North Sea Jazz Festival on five tracks including Give it One, Birdland, Everybody Loves the Blues, Airegin, and Pagliacci. This one lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but just barely! It's a FANTASTIC RECORDING!!!! I can strongly recommend this one. It's perhaps my favorite recording of Everybody Loves the Blues. The band was in amazing form for this performance. A MUST HAVE!!!

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE NEWPORT JAZZ FESTIVAL, FT. ADAMS STATE PARK, NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND, JULY 20, 1980 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

Maynard and his big band performed live at The Newport Jazz Festival on eight tracks including Blue Birdland (3 times), Give it One, Birdland, Everybody Loves the Blues, MF Hit Medley, and Gonna Fly Now. This one lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording. It sounds like it was taped by an audience member. Still, it's pretty good for that type of recording. You can hear the band and MF clearly and there is some great solo work, as well.

Maynard and his big band performed live at Rolling Meadows High School on the tracks Blue Birdland, Give it One, Birdland, Dance to Your Heart, You Can Have Me Anytime, Everybody Loves the Blues, Latino Lovewalk, MF Hit Medley, and Gonna Fly Now. This one lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, and, in fact, it's not the best of recordings. Also, the editing is choppy in places. As a result, this one is priced less than most of the double CDRs.

Keep in mind that Elkhart, Indiana is one of the biggest places in the world for musical instrument manufacture, and MF mentions this several times, giving special kudos to Holton and Selmer. The extended version of Latino Lovewalk on this one is truly amazing, but the entire recording is good. This one lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but again, it’s quite good.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE PLAYBOY JAZZ FESTIVAL, THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL, HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA, JUNE 19, 1982 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON CDR)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his big band performed live at the Hollywood Bowl on the tracks Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough, Portuguese Love, and Hollywood. Apparently just these three tracks were captured from the 50-minute set. It's pretty obvious that this was captured directly from the sound board that day, as it's a crisp, clean, and well-balanced recording. Although it lacks a little bit of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, it's amazingly good. Since it's only the three tracks, it's priced accordingly.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $7.50.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE MONTREAL INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL, ST. DENIS THEATRE, MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA, JULY 2, 1982 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his big band performed live in Montreal on 6 tracks including Birdland, Hollywood, Take the 'A' Train, Sesame Street, Portuguese Love, and the MF Hit Medley (MacArthur Park, Chameleon, and Maria). Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this one is much better than most. The sound is clean and sharp and it's very, very enjoyable! Recommended!

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE MAYPORT AND ALL THAT JAZZ FESTIVAL, METROPOLITAN PARK, JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA, OCTOBER 9, 1982 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his big band performed live in Jacksonville on 5 tracks including Hollywood, MF Hit Medley (MacArthur Park, Chameleon, Hey Jude), Blue Birdland, Gonna Fly Now, and Blue Birdland (reprise). Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this one was taped from a local PBS broadcast of the concert, so it's quite good. It's shorter than most of these live CDRs, so is priced accordingly.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $7.50.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN, KENOSHA, WISCONSIN, NOVEMBER 28, 1982 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

Maynard and his big band performed live at the University on 10 tracks including Blue Birdland, Birdland, Hollywood, Take the "A" Train, For Your Eyes Only, Sesame Street, Fireshaker, As Time Goes By, Christmas for Moderns, and Gonna Fly Now. Some of the dialog between MF and the audience has been retained. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you'd expect in a studio recording, but it’s quite acceptable.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT ROCKEFELLER'S, HOUSTON, TEXAS, APRIL 27, 1983 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. This is the second set the night of 4/27. Maynard and his big band performed live on Blue Birdland, Birdland, Coconut Champagne, South 21st Shuffle, Bebop Buffet, As Time Goes By, MF Hit Medley, and Gonna Fly Now. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you'd expect in a studio recording, but this one is quite good. It's a little shorter than most of the double CDRs, so it's priced accordingly.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $20.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE J.H. MCGAUGH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, SEAL BEACH, CALIFORNIA, JANUARY 15, 1984 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his band performed live at the annual benefit concert for the Los Alamitos Unified School District band program on Blue Birdland, Birdland, Portuguese Love, South 21st Shuffle, Lush Life, Bebop Buffet, and Gonna Fly Now. All of the dialog between MF and the audience has been retained and it's quite interesting and, in many places, quite humorous. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this is one of the best live recordings available. Excellent sound quality and an obviously professional recording.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $25.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE GLENDALE MALL ATRIUM, INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, FEBRUARY 25, 1984 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his band performed live at the Glendale Mall on Blue Birdland, Birdland, South 21st Shuffle, Take the 'A' Train, Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough, Bebop Buffet, Central Park, Portuguese Love, MF Hit Medley, and Gonna Fly Now. All three sets are captured here. Much of the dialog between MF and the audience has been retained. Like many live recordings, it lacks the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, and in this case, it has definite flaws, with a lot of audience noise and loud clapping. It's not the best, and it's priced a bit lower for that reason. Still, it's wonderful that this recording even exists!
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $17.50.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT INDIANA UNIVERSITY, BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA, OCTOBER 14, 1984 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his band performed live at Indiana University on Blue Birdland, Expresso, Central Park, South 21st Shuffle, Bebop Buffet, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Mira Mira, MF Hit Medley, and Birdland. Both sets are captured here. Much of the dialog between MF and the audience has been retained. Of special interest is the flute solo by Dennis DiBlasio on Santa Claus is Coming to Town which opens the second set. I'm not really sure why that was performed in mid-October, but the date of this recording checks out, and it's a fun interlude before the second set begins. Like many live recordings, it lacks the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it's actually pretty good.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT CHAFFEY HIGH SCHOOL, ONTARIO, CALIFORNIA, JANUARY 21, 1985 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here we have Maynard and his big band performing live. Tracks include Blue Birdland, Expresso, Central Park, MF Hit Medley (MacArthur Park, Chameleon, Hey Jude, Gonna Fly Now), and As Time Goes By. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this one is a bit better than most and probably was recorded via the band's sound system. I'm sure this is not the entire concert, but it's what survives, and is worth a listen. Edited a bit tightly and a bit shorter than most so it's priced accordingly.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $10.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE WEST VIRGINIA JAZZ FESTIVAL, CHARLESTON, WEST VIRGINIA, MARCH 23, 1985 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here we have Maynard and his big band performing live. It's a pretty amazing recording! Tracks include Introduction, Blue Birdland, Expresso, Central Park, Coconut Champagne, Beautiful Hearts, Balboa, Bebop Buffet, and MF Hit Medley. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this one is better than most -- quite good.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT CARMEL HIGH SCHOOL, CARMEL, INDIANA, OCTOBER 20, 1985 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here we have Maynard and his big band performing live. Tracks include Blue Birdland, Expresso, Central Park, Coconut Champagne, Beautiful Hearts, Bebop Buffet, MF Hit Medley, and Birdland. There is also a really interesting solo piano interlude by pianist Todd Carlon, and quite cool. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but overall, it's quite nice. It's a little shorter than some of the double CDRs, so is priced a bit less.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $22.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT BATESVILLE HIGH SCHOOL, BATESVILLE, INDIANA, MARCH 4, 1986 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here we have Maynard and his big band performing live. I need to be very clear. This is a poor recording. It was apparently done on a portable cassette plays by a young audience member who was overly enthusiastic (weren't we all at that age) and who yells, claps, and even sings along. The fidelity is rather poor and there are a lot of annoyances interrupting the music. But it's very hard to find recordings of the band from 1986 for some reason, and at least we have this historical record. Tracks include Central Park, The Last Dive, Beautiful Hearts, Bebop Buffet, Blue Birdland, Mira Mira, As Time Goes By, MF Hit Medley, and Birdland. There is also a really interesting solo piano interlude by pianist Todd Carlon, and that's quite unique. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, and this one is worse than most. Due to the problems with the recording, this double CDR is priced less than a single.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $12.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT LAKE WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL, KIRKLAND, WASHINGTON, APRIL 9, 1986 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here we have Maynard and his big band performing live. Tracks include Blue Birdland, Expresso, Central Park, The Last Dive (Partial), Mira Mira, and MF Hit Medley. Research indicates that four other tracks were played that night Beautiful Hearts, Bebop Buffet, Birdland, and Blue Birdland (Closer) but they did not make it onto this recording. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, and this one is definitely not the best. Due to problems with fidelity, this one is priced less than normal. Still, it's a nice historical record of what the band was doing in 1986 since very little live material has survived from that year.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $10.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE 24TH ANNUAL JAZZFEST, WEST BERLIN, GERMANY, NOVEMBER 7, 1987 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here we have Maynard and big band performing live in Berlin. This recording is transcribed from a German television program entitled The ZDF Jazz Club. Maynard was using his smaller High Voltage group at this time but flew in four additional personnel to join the band for this performance, including Wayne Bergeron on trumpet. Tracks include Blue Birdland, The Last Dive, Body & Soul, Shufflemonk, Jack Usage, Stardust, The Marketplace, Birdland, and Gonna Fly Now. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this one, since it was being recorded for a television broadcast, is really good.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $15.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE IN PENNSAUKEN, NEW JERSEY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1988 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this one is better than most -- quite good. Maynard's high register work on this one is quite amazing.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE ON THE ARSENIO HALL SHOW, STAGE 29, PARAMOUNT STUDIOS, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, MARCH 27, 1989 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here we have Maynard appearing on the Arsenio Hall Show. It's a really cool recording of highlights from the show featuring MF. Arsenio recognizes Maynard right at the end of the opening credits and chats a bit with him. Four different times during the show Maynard performs a short tune with the show's band. Towards the end of the program, he is featured with a couple of his own musicians and the show's band on Whatcha Thinkin' from the High Voltage 2 album. Afterward, Arsenio holds up a copy of the album and plugs it and says he's keeping that copy for himself. Although these excerpts are only about 12 minutes total, this is a very cool setting for MF and he's quite interesting playing with the show's band. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this one is really good since it was professionally recorded for a TV program. Highly recommended.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT JOHNNY D'S, SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS, JUNE 19, 1990 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 3 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here we have Maynard and Big Bop Nouveau performing two full sets at Johnny D's on the evening of June 19, 1990. Full commentary from MF is included. He mentions that this is the first night for Christian Jacob to join the band after extensive rehearsing with the band in California. He also shows the crowd the brand-new band jackets which have just arrived emblazoned with the typographical error "Big Bop Noveau," or, translated from the French, "Big Bop No Veal" in English. Maynard jokes that they're becoming vegetarians. Really a great night and great fun from Maynard, the band, and the crowd. A few tracks are repeated in the second set but are still captured here. Tracks include Blue Birdland, A Night in Tunisia, In a Mellow Tone, Cruisin' for a Bluesin', But Beautiful, Hit and Run, Birdland, Rhythm Method, Glenn's Den, The Fox Hunt, St. Thomas, and My One and Only Love. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this one is better than most -- quite good.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE THEATRE ROYAL, GLASGOW, SCOTLAND, JULY 5, 1990 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here we have Maynard and his big band performing live on a wonderful recording produced by the BBC. Tracks include Blue Birdland, In a Mellow Tone, Cruisin' for a Bluesin', But Beautiful, Rhythm Method, St. Thomas, Glenn's Den, Hit and Run, and Birdland. Even though it's a live recording, the sound quality is absolutely excellent on this one. It could have been released as a commercial recording.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT NEENAH HIGH SCHOOL, NEENAH, WISCONSIN, NOVEMBER 30, 1990 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON CDR)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here we have Maynard and his big band performing live on a really nice recording of a high school performance in Wisconsin. Tracks include Blue Birdland, A Night in Tunisia, In a Mellow Tone, Glenn's Den, St. Thomas (Partial), MF Hit Medley, and Gonna Fly Now. St. Thomas had the end truncated due to a tape change during the performance. The sound quality on this one is quite good. Mic placement seems to have been good and it appears to have been recorded on excellent equipment. Truly excellent fidelity in most places. I can recommend this one.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $15.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE 22ND ANNUAL INTERNATIONALE JAZZWOCHE, BURGHAUSEN, GERMANY, MARCH 17, 1991 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here we have Maynard and his big band performing live on a wonderful recording. Tracks include In a Mellow Tone, But Beautiful, St. Thomas, Cruisin' for a Bluesin', and Blue Birdland. Even though it's a live recording, the sound quality is really excellent on this one. What really blew me away on this one was Christian Jacob's improvisational piano solo on St. Thomas. Brilliant!!! Oh, and the trumpet section, trombones, and saxes were amazing as well. Did I mention the rhythm section? A must have.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $15.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE BERN JAZZ FESTIVAL, BERN, SWITZERLAND, MAY 4, 1991 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

Tracks include Introduction, A Night in Tunisia, In a Mellow Tone, Cruisin' for a Bluesin', Interview with MF, But Beautiful, St. Thomas, and Blue Birdland. Even though it's a live recording, the sound quality is really excellent on this one. What really blew me away on this one was Christian Jacob's improvisational piano solo on But Beautiful. Brilliant!!! One of the best live performances you're going to hear.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $15.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE ULMER JAZZKELLER SAUSCHDALL, ULM, GERMANY, MAY 6, 1991 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here we have Maynard and his big band performing live on a wonderful recording. Tracks include Introduction and Blue Birdland, A Night in Tunisia, In a Mellow Tone, Cruisin' for a Bluesin', But Beautiful, St. Thomas, and the MF Hit Medley. Even though it's a live recording, the sound quality is really excellent on this one. What really blew me away on this performance was Christian Jacob's improvisational piano solo on But Beautiful. But I also really enjoyed the version of Chameleon within the MF Hit Medley with some incredible licks on an electronic instrument. Brilliant!!! The band was really together and the microphone placement was superb. One of the best live performances you're going to hear. Although this one comes on two CDRs, it's a bit shorter than most double CDRs, so it's priced a bit less, as well.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $20.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE STAN KENTON 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION: BACK TO BALBOA, NEWPORT BEACH, CALIFORNIA, JUNE 2, 1991 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. You probably know about this concert. Portions of it were issued commercially on the MAMA label, including MF and Big Bop Nouveau on the tracks Night in Tunisia and Hit and Run. But most of the band's work that day was never released commercially. Here is most of that performance. Tracks include Blue Birdland, A Night in Tunisia, But Beautiful, and the MF Hit Medley, along with some very funny comments by MF interspersed between tracks. Of particular note is Christian Jacob's performance on But Beautiful. Absolutely brilliant! Since it's a live recording, the sound quality is not what you'd expect from a commercial recording, but it's decent.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $15.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE PHILADELPHIA ART MUSEUM, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, JULY 4, 1991 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Tracks include Blue Birdland, A Night in Tunisia, St. Thomas, Birdland, and Gonna Fly Now (Theme from Rocky). Since it's a live recording, the sound quality is not what you'd expect from a commercial recording, but it's REALLY GOOD! It was obviously professionally recorded from the sound board. It's about as close to studio quality as you're going to get on a live recording.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $15.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT MUSIC AT THE GROVE, NEWARK, CALIFORNIA, JULY 21, 1991 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Tracks include Blue Birdland, A Night in Tunisia, In a Mellow Tone, But Beautiful, St. Thomas, MF Hit Medley, and Birdland. Interestingly, I think the version of Chameleon during the MF Hit Medley is one of the most rocking versions I've ever heard, and the closing Blue Birdland, likewise, really rocks! Those two really blew me away. Since it's a live recording, the sound quality is not what you'd expect from a commercial recording. This was performed on an outdoors stage, and it appears to have been recorded by an audience member on a hand-held portable tape recorder. As such, the fidelity is poor and there is quite a bit of distortion, especially in the louder passages. If you're buying it as a historical recording, great, but if you're buying it for great fidelity, skip this one. Although it's a double CD, it's priced less than usual due to the recording quality.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $17.50.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT CLUB OVATIONS, PEABODY, MASSACHUSETTS, APRIL 12, 1992 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

Tracks include A Night in Tunisia, But Beautiful, Brazil, Birdland, Blue Birdland, Break the Ice, That's My Desire, MF Hit Medley, and Gonna Fly Now. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, and it's not top sound quality, but it’s quite acceptable.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $25.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE OSWEGO AUDITORIUM, OSWEGO, NEW YORK, MAY 7, 1992 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON CDR)

Tracks include Blue Birdland, Get it to Go, Break the Ice, But Beautiful, Brazil, That's My Desire, MF Hit Medley, and Birdland. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording. There are some rough transitions in a few places, but I smoothed them out a bit and it's generally a quite good recording. Well worth a listen.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $15.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT JAZZ JAMBOREE '92, CONGRESS HALL, THE PALACE OF CULTURE AND SCIENCE, WARSAW, POLAND, OCTOBER 23, 1992 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here we have Maynard and his big band performing live in Warsaw, Poland. Tracks include Blue Birdland, Get it to Go, A Night in Tunisia, That's My Desire, Brazil, Footpath Cafe, MF Hit Medley, Birdland, and Gonna Fly Now. The audience goes nuts and applauds for about 3 minutes in order to get MF to do his second encore on Gonna Fly Now. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but just barely. This one was professionally taped for broadcast on Polish television, and as such, it's really good. I can strongly recommend this one!
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $25.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE GUINESS CORK JAZZ FESTIVAL, THE CORK OPERA HOUSE, CORK, IRELAND, OCTOBER 25, 1992 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON CDR)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here we have Maynard and his big band performing live in Ireland. Tracks include Get it to Go, That's My Desire, MF Interview, Brazil, Poison Ya Blues, MF Hit Medley, Birdland, and Blue Birdland. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but just barely. This is a professionally recorded performance, the fidelity is excellent, and the band and MF were in top form. There's even an interview with Maynard included. Highly recommended!
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $15.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT BRICK TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL, BRICK MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM, BRICK TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY, MARCH 12, 1993 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here we have Maynard and his big band performing live in New Jersey. Tracks include Blue Birdland, Get it to Go, A Night in Tunisia, That's My Desire, Brazil, Poison Ya' Blues, MF Hit Medley, and Gonna Fly Now. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but just barely. This is a very nice recording by an audience member, with decent fidelity, and it's 100% complete. This one really takes me back. To hear the primarily high school audience going crazy for this music is inspiring! Maynard was in top form, both with his playing and with his delightful commentary. For example, a huge blizzard was about to hit, and he remarks about the great weather "coming tomorrow." He was really "on" that night. The band sounds great, too. At the end, the high school kids get to join MF and the band playing Gonna Fly Now. If you remember a high school auditorium performance by MF, and want to recapture it, this is about the best way to do so. A bit shorter than most 2-CDR sets, so priced accordingly.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT CLUB BENÉ, SAYREVILLE, NEW JERSEY, OCTOBER 1, 1993 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here we have Maynard and his big band performing live in New Jersey. Tracks include Blue Birdland, Get it to Go, A Night in Tunisia, Band Introductions and Audience Banter, That's My Desire, Brazil, I Don't Wanna Be a Hoochie Coochie Man No Mo', St. Thomas, MF Hit Medley, and Birdland. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this is a very nice recording by an audience member, with quite decent fidelity. Maynard and the band were very together for this performance, but an obnoxious drunk kept interrupting MF while he was talking. Maynard deals with him nicely, then a bit roughly, then just tells him to please be quiet. But what amazed me was now many great come-back lines Maynard had for this guy. Regardless of this one obnoxious audience member, it's quite a nice recording and well worthwhile. In fact, I really enjoyed hearing MF deal with this guy!

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE EPCOT CENTER, WALT DISNEY WORLD, ORLANDO FLORIDA WITH THE ALL-AMERICAN COLLEGE JAZZ BAND AND SINGERS CONDUCTED BY DR. RONALD C. MCCURDY, JULY 2-4, 1994 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and the horn section from Big Bop Nouveau joined this all-star college ensemble in the 1994 performance which was a tribute to Duke Ellington. The college band played the opening number, followed by Maynard and his guys joining them on stage. The rehearsal was on July 1 followed by two performances per night July 2-4. This recording includes two near-identical sets from those performances on July 2-4, but exact performance dates for each set are unknown. Tracks include Introduction and Take the 'A' Train, Get it to Go, Caravan, In a Sentimental Mood, Birdland, Blue Birdland, and Gonna Fly Now. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this one is better than most.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE ST. ANSELM COLLEGE, MANCHESTER. NEW HAMPSHIRE, MARCH 17, 1995 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his big band performing live on 4 tracks including Blue Birdland, Get it to Go, Caravan, and That's My Desire. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it’s quite acceptable. Since there are only four tracks from this session, it's priced accordingly.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $10.00.

Maynard and his big band performing live on 6 tracks including Blue Birdland, You Got It, Caravan, I Don't Want to be a Hoochie Coochie Man No Mo, Sweet Baba Suite, and Birdland. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it’s quite acceptable.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE WIGAN INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL, WIGAN ENGLAND, JULY 17, 1995 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here's Maynard and his band performing live on Blue Birdland, It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing, Caravan, Sweet Baba Suite, Poison Ya Blues, Sugar, She Was Too Good to Me, Milestones, A Night in Tunisia, and Birdland. I really like this one. The version of Sugar is one you won't find on many of these recordings and it's really good. Maynard and the guys also surprise Scott Englebright, singing him a rendition of Happy Birthday in the middle of the first set. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this one is quite good.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $25.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT PURDUE UNIVERSITY, LAFAYETTE, INDIANA, OCTOBER 14, 1995 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and his big band performing live on 4 tracks including Blue Birdland, You Got It, Caravan, and Sweet Baba Suite. These are extended versions of the tracks and there's some great soloing and section work. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but in this case, the recording is truly excellent, with great fidelity.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE 10th INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL, VIERSEN, NORTH RHINE-WESTPHALIA, GERMANY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1996 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard and the band appeared at this wonderful German jazz festival and the recording is professional and quite outstanding. The tracks are You Got It, Caravan, Sweet Baba Suite, It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got that Swing, and two short but interesting interviews with MF. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this is as good as these live recordings get. Truly a wonderful recording, excellent microphone placement, and excellent fidelity. Highly recommended!

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE ON THE HOME AND FAMILY TELEVISION SHOW, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, OCTOBER 22, 1996 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard appeared on this cable TV show with only his rhythm section: Christian Jacob (P), Trey Henry (B), and Ray Brinker (D). He plays along with the show's theme song (The e_Mail Song), chats with the hosts a bit, and performs on You Got It and Night in Tunisia. Quite an interesting setting for MF in a quartet. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it's OK for casual listening.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE MILL ON THE PIER, WIGAN, ENGLAND, BBC RADIO BROADCAST MARCH 5, 1997 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here we have Maynard and his big band performing live in Wigan, England. The actual recording took place on the nights of September 24th and 25th, 1996 for this March 5, 1997 broadcast. Tracks include You Got It, Sugar, Sweet Baba Suite, I Don't Wanna Be a Hoochie Coochie Man No More, It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing, Blues from Around Here, I Can't Get Started with You, Milestones, A Night in Tunisia, and Birdland. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but being recorded by the BBC with professional equipment, this is about as good as it gets for a live recording.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT OCTOBERFEST, LA CROSSE, WISCONSIN, OCTOBER 1997 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

Maynard and his big band performing live on 6 tracks including Blue Birdland, It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing, A Night in Tunisia, Birdland, and Gonna Fly Now. A special note on this one. The fidelity on this recording is relatively poor. However, it has historical significance, so it being preserved to capture the tracks played at this engagement, as well as the commentary from Maynard.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE MCCREARY CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL, STEARNS, KENTUCKY, MAY 11, 1999 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. This CDR contains only a portion of this concert. It has the full track Just Friends, and it has an additional track that's a medley of other performances from that evening. It's less than 16 minutes total time, so is priced accordingly. Although not the complete concert, what's here is historically significant so is being preserved for that reason. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this one is actually very nice.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $7.50.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE VAN DYCK LOUNGE, SCHENECTADY, NEW YORK, MAY 11, 2000 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. This is the second set Maynard and the band performed that night at the Van Dyck Lounge. The tracks include Blue Birdland, It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got that Swing, Friday Night at the Cadillac Club, I Love You, Waltz for Nicole, Do You Know What it Means to Miss New Orleans?, and A Night in Tunisia. Right in the middle of the set, Ed Sargeant comes to the stage to announce a special raffle, and it's actually a ruse to get a young lady up to the stage where her boyfriend can ask her to marry him. (She says YES!) Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this one is really nice. It sounds like it was recorded directly from the sound board and I can close my eyes and almost feel like I'm sitting in the club. Highly recommended.

BOSTON METROPOLITAN ORCHESTRA, SUMMON THE LEGENDS WITH MAYNARD FERGUSON & ARTURO SANDOVAL, LIVE AT THE BERKLEE PERFORMANCE CENTER IN BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, MAY 14, 2000 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Maynard Ferguson and Arturo Sandoval were honored in May 2000 at a concert put on by the Boston Metropolitan Orchestra. The Orchestra performed a new composition entitled Summon the Legenda Overture (dedicated to Maynard and Arturo). This was followed by Arturo's Sextet on 5 tracks, then MF and Big Bop Nouveau on four tracks. The concert wrapped up with Maynard and Arturo jointly performing A Night in Tunisia. This is an amazing performance! Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it’s quite acceptable.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT A TASTE OF MINNESOTA, ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, JULY 4, 2000 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON CDR)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. MF and Big Bop Nouveau perform here on 9 tracks including Introduction / Blue Birdland, The Star Spangled Banner, You Got It, Just Friends, The Girl from Ipanema, Misra Dhenuka, I Can't Get Started, Cajun Cookin' / MF Hit Medley / Blue Birdland, and Birdland. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, and there's considerable crowd noise in the background, so it's not the best. But I'm not sure where else you will find MF playing The Star Spangled Banner! Due to the quality issues with this recording, it's priced a bit lower than most.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $10.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT SPENCER HIGH SCHOOL, SPENCER, WISCONSIN, MARCH 3, 2001 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON CDR)

MF and Big Bop Nouveau perform here on 8 tracks including Blue Birdland, You Got It, Waltz for Nicole, Misra-Dhenuka, Milestones, On the Sunny Side of the Street, Cajun Cookin', and the Hit Medley. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it’s quite good.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE 32ND ANNUAL JAZZWOCHE, BURGHAUSEN, GERMANY, MAY 4, 2001 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. MF and Big Bop Nouveau perform here on Blue Birdland, It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got that Swing, Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone, Straight No Chaser, Misra-Dhenuka, Milestones, On the Sunny Side of the Street, The Girl from Ipanema, and Birdland. This is one of my favorite live recordings!!! MF and the band were in excellent form, the recording quality is professional-grade, and it sounds wonderful. I was blown away to find that Straight No Chaser is on this recording! All the dialogue has been retained between tracks. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it’s one of the very best live recordings of MF and the band extant.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE BASEMENT CLUB, SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA, FEBRUARY 23, 2002 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON CDR)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. MF and Big Bop Nouveau performed at the Basement Club in Sydney where the performance was taped for television and narrated by Australian super-trumpeter James Morrison. Morrison provides insightful commentary throughout, and he even performs with the group on the track Blues from Around Here. The tracks include It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got that Swing, Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone, Birdland, I Love You, Blues from Around Here, MF Hit Medley, Blue Birdland, and Milestones. This is one of my favorite live recordings!!! MF and the band were in excellent form, the recording quality is professional-grade, and it sounds wonderful. James Morrison's playing on the blues track is absolutely amazing!!! Apparently, ex-President Bill Clinton was in the audience that night, as well. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it’s one of the very best live recordings of MF and the band extant. I listened on high-end equipment with my eyes closed and it almost sounded like I was sitting in the club listening live. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only time MF played with Morrison, as well. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!

DIANE SCHUUR, MAYNARD FERGUSON, AND THE BIG BOP NOUVEAU BAND LIVE AT RUTGERS UNIVERSITY, APRIL 6, 2002 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON CDR)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. MF and Big Bop Nouveau headlined this concert with Diane Schuur at Rutgers in April of 2002. Copies of this recording are from the Dick Slade Estate. I’m not sure where Dick got this live recording, but to my knowledge it is not commercially available. There are 13 tracks, some of which I had never heard before: Blue Birdland, It Don’t Mean a Thing if It Ain’t Got That Swing, The Girl from Ipanema, Just One of Those Things, Deep Purple, Autumn Leaves, Love Letters, East of the Sun, I Fall in Love too Easily, Lush Life, My Romance, Besame Mucho/Blue Birdland, and the encore, Just Friends. MF and Big Bop are featured on the first three tracks, then Schuur joins them starting on track 4. Schuur was really “up” for this performance, with witty commentary and great vocals. And Big Bop and Maynard were really SWINGING behind her!!!! Total playing time is 73:05. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it’s quite acceptable.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE WITH THE PIEDMONT WIND SYMPHONY, BRENDLE RECITAL HALL, WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY, WINSTON-SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA, MAY 18, 2002 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON CDR)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. MF was invited to play Danny Boy with this wind symphony while visiting Wake Forest University. There's just the one track on this CDR. Chip McNeill from Big Bop Nouveau also appeared and played a tenor sax solo as part of this performance. It's really cool to see MF in front of an orchestra. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it appears to have been taped from the hall's sound system and is actually a very nice recording. Due to the short duration, this one is priced accordingly.
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $7.50.

Tracks include Blue Birdland, It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing, Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone, The Girl from Ipanema, Misra Dhenuka, Milestones, MF Hit Medley, and Birdland. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording. It was apparently recorded by an audience member, but the recording is actually quite good. Well worthwhile!
COPY #1. This copy is NMINT+. $25.00.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT HOMESTEAD HIGH SCHOOL, MEQUON, WISCONSIN, OCTOBER 27, 2002 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here's MF and Big Bop Nouveau at a high school concert in Wisconsin. Tracks include Blue Birdland, It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing, Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone, and The Girl from Ipanema. It appears that not all of the concert was captured here, but still, it's 40+ minutes of great music with extended solos and some great performances. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording. It was apparently recorded by an audience member, but the recording is actually quite good. Well worthwhile!

I can definitely recommend this one.

Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this one is quite good. It was professionally recorded with excellent microphone placement because it was simulcast on the internet. Great fidelity, clear sound, and the group was on top form that evening. In fact, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this one could have been released commercially. It's that good. Crank up the volume and enjoy!!! I can definitely recommend this one.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT RYLE'S JAZZ CLUB, CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, 75TH BIRTHDAY BASH, MAY 3, 2003 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. This 2-disc set mainly has MF band alumni personnel playing as a tribute to MF. MF and Big Bop Nouveau only play on the final three tracks of Disc 2. The Disc 1 tracks, without MF, include a really nice extended version of Blue Birdland, Got the Spirit, Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, Superbone Meets the Bad Man, Stella by Starlight, and Happy Birthday. Disc 2 continues with the alumni personnel on Stay Loose with Bruce, The Way We Were, MF Hit Medley, and Blue Birdland. At this point on Disc 2, MF and Big Bop Nouveau take over and play Blue Birdland, It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got that Swing, and Blues from Around Here/Blue Birdland. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this one is superior to most. And it's a real treat hearing several dozen different alums perform!

Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this one is pretty good. What's really cool about this one is the fact that the fire department evacuates the building in the middle of It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got that Swing! It's wonderful listening to the aftermath -- MF joking with the audience, making a siren sound with his trumpet, getting the band queued up at the right spot to continue the tune, etc. Really a fun one, and quite good.

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here's the MF band live at The Stockholm Jazz Festival. This is quite a good recording. Tracks include Introduction and Blue Birdland, I Love You, Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone, The Girl from Ipanema, But Beautiful, and MF Hit Medley (Partial). Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this one is quite good. Actually, a very nice recording.

MAYNARD FERGUSON AND BIG BOP NOUVEAU LIVE AT THE LOS ANGELES JAZZ INSTITUTE STRATOSPHERIC TRIBUTE CONCERT SERIES, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, OCTOBER 3, 2004 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON CDR)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. From Thursday, September 30 through Sunday, October 3, 2004, the Los Angeles Jazz Institute sponsored a series of films, panel discussions, and concerts celebrating the life and career of Maynard Ferguson. The first 16 concerts, using mostly MF alumni players and original arrangements, recapped Maynard’s career from the early years: the Birdland Dream Band, Roulette, Cameo, Columbia and later eras, and the alumni performing were a virtual who’s who of the best players that ever performed with Maynard. The final performance of the weekend, concert 17, was by Maynard and Big Bop Nouveau, and is captured here. The large California Ballroom at the Sheraton was absolutely packed, with a standing-room-only audience. There are 8 tracks including Blue Birdland, It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing, Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone, The Girl from Ipanema, But Beautiful, MF Hit Medley, Caruso, and Blues from Around Here (Partial). Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this one is far superior to most. Really a nice recording.

MAYNARD FERGUSON AND BIG BOP NOUVEAU LIVE AT THE KOBALT CLUB, LINCOLN PARK, LINCOLN, RHODE ISLAND, JUNE 24, 2005 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON CDR)

Tracks include Weight for Six, Blue Birdland, I Love You, Frame for the Blues, The Girl from Ipanema, I'm Old Fashioned, MF Hit Medley, and Birdland. (MF does not play on Weight for Six.) MAYNARD FERGUSON AND BIG BOP NOUVEAU LIVE AT THE BARNUM FESTIVAL, BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, JUNE 25, 2005 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON CDR)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here's MF playing on an outdoor stage at a community festival in Connecticut. Tracks include Blue Birdland, I Love You, Frame for the Blues, The Girl from Ipanema, MF Hit Medley, and Birdland. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, and this one is no exception. It appears that it was recorded by an audience member and there's a lot of background noise, plus this one is a bit shorter than most. Decent, but not great, and priced accordingly.

MAYNARD FERGUSON AND BIG BOP NOUVEAU LIVE AT THE BREWERY GARDEN II, CESKY KRUMLOV, CZECH REPUBLIC, JULY 30, 2005 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON CDR)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here's MF and the band in the Czeck Republic. Tracks include Blue Birdland, It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got that Swing, Frame for the Blues, The Girl from Ipanema, But Beautiful, and the MF Hit Medley. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this one is far superior to most. Really a nice recording with absolutely excellent fidelity. I'll go so far as to say that it could have been released as a commercial recording. This performance was taped from a live internet broadcast. It began with Reggie Watkins leading the band in Caravan prior to MF coming to the stage. The person capturing these tracks failed to include that first track, most likely because MF was not present. The MF Hit Medley at the end was interrupted by a rainstorm, so fades out as rain stopped the performance. Overall, an excellent recording which I strongly recommend.

MAYNARD FERGUSON AND BIG BOP NOUVEAU LIVE AT HAMILTON HIGH SCHOOL, CHANDLER, ARIZONA, OCTOBER 1, 2005 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON CDR)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here's MF and the band in a performance at an Arizona High School. Tracks include Blue Birdland, I Love You, Frame for the Blues, The Girl from Ipanema, Darn that Dream, MF Hit Medley, and Birdland. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this one is far superior to most. Really a nice recording with absolutely excellent fidelity. Per the information supplied with the recording, it was taped on a digital recorder, was mastered properly, and just sounds wonderful. The band was tight, MF was "on," and even the MF Hit Medley is an extended version featuring eight of the MF hits instead of the usual four or five. It turned out to be one of the best CDR recordings available. Highly recommended!

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT BELLEVILLE EAST HIGH SCHOOL, BELLEVILLE, ILLINOIS, FEBRUARY 13, 2006 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON CDR)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here's MF and the band on Blue Birdland, Dr. Fox PhD, Frame for the Blues, The Girl from Ipanema, Misra Dhenuka, and the MF Hit Medley (Partial). Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording. It was apparently recorded at a fairly low volume, and turning up the gain to hear well isn't too effective. A tiny bit of the MF Hit Medley is missing at the end, as well. It's a decent recording, but without great fidelity -- a bit less than expected for this type of recording. As a result, it's priced lower than most.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE STADIUM THEATRE PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE, WOONSOCKET, RHODE ISLAND, MARCH 18, 2006 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON CDR)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. Here's MF in one of his final live performances. Tracks include Blue Birdland, Dr. Fox PhD, Frame for the Blues, The Days of Wine and Roses, The Girl from Ipanema, I Love You, But Beautiful, MF Hit Medley, and Birdland. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this one is quite nice except for the final track -- Birdland -- which suffers from a lot of distortion starting about half-way through. Since the CDR is almost 80 minutes with this track included, I thought about just removing it, but for historical accuracy, I decided to leave it on the CDR and let the listener decide whether to keep it, or not. Otherwise, quite a nice recording.

Tracks include Weight for Six, Blue Birdland, Dr. Fox PhD, Frame for the Blues, The Girl from Ipanema, But Beautiful, MF Hit Medley, and Birdland. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this one is quite nice. A very decent recording, crisp and clear.

MAYNARD FERGUSON LIVE AT THE BLUE NOTE, NEW YORK, NEW YORK, JULY 23, 2006 -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON 2 CDRs)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. This recording was made on the last night of the last week of Maynard's final tour, exactly one month, to the day, before his death on August 23rd. It is the last live recording of the band. Both sets from the Blue Note were captured on tape that night. Tracks include Blue Birdland, It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing, Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone, The Girl from Ipanema, Waltz for Nicole, MF Hit Medley, I Love You, Blues from Around Here, Milestones, Darn that Dream, and A Night in Tunisia. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but this one is quite nice. From a historical perspective, it's one of the most desirable of the MF live recordings.

MAYNARD FERGUSON, THE ALBUM THAT NEVER WAS -- (PRIVATE PRESSING ON CDR)

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSING. IT IS NOT A COMMERCIAL RECORDING. I found this CD in the Dick Slade collection. It's a compilation of live recordings that did not make it onto commercial albums. Included are Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, Fruit of the Loon, Sweet Rosetta, Foxfire, an unknown track, and two versions of The Tommy Medley with Blue Birdland. Like many live recordings, it lacks some of the fidelity you’d expect in a studio recording, but it’s quite acceptable.
