Maynard Ferguson DVDs
MAYNARD FERGUSON BIG BAND, TONY SCOTT QUARTET, LIVE IN PRAGUE, 1968 - Impro-Jazz IJ 539
Here's a great DVD from 2008. The title is a little misleading, because here Maynard is playing with the Gustav Brom Orchestra, not his own outfit, at the 1968 Prague Jazz Festival. Tracks include Take the "A" Train, Maria (from West Side Story), Got the Spirit, Send for Me, and All Right, OK, You Win. The first three tracks were familiar to me, but, of course, Maynard mixes it up from the studio versions. The second two tracks feature vocalists with MF soloing, as well, and I had never heard those two tracks before. I think this is the only place you can find them. Also included is the Tony Scott Quartet on four tracks. Total run time is 53:05, and the DVD is compatible with all DVD players in all regions. Long out of print and very hard to find.

THE WORLD OF MAYNARD FERGUSON - Sleepy Night Records SNRDVD001
Here's the recording of a British TV special that was recorded on 16mm film in 1970. It's a classic piece of television history and, at the time this DVD was released, had never been seen since the original air date, as the master had been lost for many years. This DVD is duplicated from the only surviving copy. It's Maynard's own show and features not only his British Big Band, but also special guests from all different types of music of the day including jazz singer Jon Hendricks (Gimme That Wine), classical guitarist John Williams, the pop group Arrival, singer Sylvia McNeill, and Indian musician Mukunda. It's an interestingly staged show with roller skating hippies in tie died outfits, singers swinging on flower-bedecked swings hung from the ceiling, infrared photography in spots, etc., etc. Special features include an interview with MF's manager and friend Ernie Garside, and rare footage of Maynard filmed by his friend Gary Gillies from 1994 to 2004.

SARAH VAUGHAN & FRIENDS, WITH DON CHERRY, MAYNARD FERGUSON, DIZZY GILLESPIE, AL HIRT, HERBIE HANCOCK, CHUCK MANGIONE, RON CARTER, AND BILLY HIGGINS -- A NIGHT OF SASS & BRASS - Immortal IMM 940083
This 2006 DVD is a recording of a performance at the Storyville Jazz Hall in New Orleans in 1986. Sarah Vaughan is, of course, the headliner, but with Maynard, Al Hirt, Don Cherry, Dizzy Gillespie, and Chuck Mangione backing her as a trumpet section, and Herbie Hancock on Piano, Ron Carter on Bass, and Billy Higgins on Drums, this is an absolutely amazing performance. I'm not sure you can hear MF playing with any of these particular trumpeters on any other recording. He does some great solo work, as do the other players, throughout the DVD. Tracks include Watermelon Man, I Can't Give You Anything but Love, Just Friends, Send in the Clowns, Bimsha Swing, I Can't Get Started, 'Round Midnight, Bags' Groove, Take the "A" Train, and Watermelon Man (Reprise). Total playing time is approximately 57 minutes. Long out of print and very hard to find.

LIFE ON THE ROAD WITH MAYNARD FERGUSON AND THE BIG BOP NOUVEAU BAND, 1989-2006 – E&D Productions ORMFDVD
Here's a 2012 DVD of various video clips of MF and the band over the years from 1989 to 2006. You won't find this amazing material anywhere else. It was filmed at concerts and locations all over the U.S. and even as far as India. Also included are some unreleased tunes, a pictorial montage, and a final encore of Caruso from 2004. Liner notes are included from Ed Sargent and Dan Potts. The back cover has some great photos of Maynard, most of which I had never seen before, including one of him swimming with a dolphin! Great DVD!!! It's long out of print and very hard to find!

LIVE FROM SEATTLE, MAYNARD FERGUSON, LIVE FROM THE KING CAT THEATER -- Paradise Media Partners
This DVD was released in 2004, and I believe the performance dates to about that same year. Tracks include You Got It, Caravan, Misra-Dhenuke, Milestones, Gonna Fly Now, and Birdland. Run time is approximately 56 minutes. It's long out of print and very hard to find. The microphone placement (one or more on every instrument) and excellent mixing with Dolby sound make this an especially good DVD.

LIVE FROM SEATTLE, DIANE SCHUUR WITH MAYNARD FERGUSON AND HIS BIG BOP NOUVEAU BAND, LIVE FROM THE KING CAT THEATER - Paradise Media Partners
This DVD was released in 2006, and I believe the performance dates to about 2004, as it appears to have been recorded at the same time as the MF King Cat Theater DVD. There are 15 tracks in all. Big Bop Nouveau performs throughout, but MF only appears on the last two tracks. Run time is approximately 56 minutes. As with the MF King Cat DVD, the microphone placement (one or more on every instrument) and excellent mixing with Dolby sound make this an especially good DVD.

MAYNARD FERGUSON TRIBUTE, 1928-2006 - Contemporary Productions
This DVD was released in 2007, and it showcases the tribute concert that was held in St. Louis in September 2006, about a month after Maynard's passing. The band consists of MF sidemen from the years 1973 through 2006, and there are very few major players from those years who are not represented. Included are special guest trumpeters Eric Miyashiro, Lew Soloff (from Blood, Sweat, and Tears), and Andrea Tofanelli. The tunes run the gamut from the Birdland Dream Band days through the Concord days, right up to Maynard's last album. I'm not sure if my favorite performance is Eric Miyashiro on Give it One, Andrea Tofanelli on Tenderly, Dennis Noday on Maria, or Wayne Bergeron on MacArthur Park. Perhaps you will have even another favorite. A truly beautiful concert! The first disc is the concert itself. Disc 2 is full of Bonus Features, including footage of MF playing with Stan Kenton in 1950 all the way through to studio footage of "The One and Only" in 2006. The accompanying booklet sums it all up nicely. Very, very rare. I don't remember seeing one of these for sale in years now.
