Patti Page LPs with Maynard Ferguson
PATTI PAGE WITH PETE RUGOLO AND HIS ORCHESTRA, PATTI PAGE IN THE LAND OF HI-FI -- Verve 314 538 330-2
On May 7-8, 1956, Pete Rugolo put together this fantastic high-fi recording session for artist Patti Page, and he brought along the best side men in Hollywood. For many years, no one knew whether Maynard was on this session, or not. Then, in 1999, this album came out on CD, and the liner notes said that the trumpets were Chico Alvarez, Pete Candoli, Buddy Childers, poss. Maynard Ferguson, and poss. Ray Linn. Of course, "poss." meant "possibly." When I listened to the CD, all I had to listen to were two tracks. When it got to the track "Out of Nowhere," it just popped right out at me. There was Maynard blowing away in the upper register in two identical passages. I was convinced. Next ... our Major Collector friend who auctioned off his collection on this website personally asked Patti Page (in March, 2000, at a concert in Washington, DC) if Maynard was on this release. She said, "YES!" Then the final domino fell. In 2009, this album was issued on CD by Fresh Sound Records in Spain, and this time it cited precise information. MF plays on 6 tracks: Nevertheless, Out of Nowhere, The Lady is a Tramp, I've Got My Eyes on You, I Didn't Know About You, My Sin. Page could really belt out the tunes, and Rugolo's arrangements are outstanding! This is the 1999 version of the CD. It comes in one of the cardboard-type gatefold covers as opposed to a jewel case.
