Old Auction Results

Back in the good old 20th century, I held an on-going auction of rare and interesting Maynard Ferguson material. I no longer do this, but I'm leaving the old auction results available so you can see what things sold for back in the "good old days." Some of the prices now appear to be very inflated, because since 1998 when I started these auctions, the internet has exploded, and many, many more copies of what was then quite rare have turned up, causing the prices to decrease pretty dramatically. In other cases, what was only available on vinyl at that time has now been released on CD, and that's caused the demand to drop for the vinyl. But interestingly, some of these have proven to be even more rare than what we thought at the time, and I would gladly pay the auction price just to get a copy again today. Enjoy your trip down memory lane! John.

AUCTION ITEM #1: THE BALLAD STYLE OF MAYNARD FERGUSON -- CBS 63514

After many, many months of trying, I finally located a copy of The Ballad Style of Maynard Ferguson, as pictured above. Many of you have written me over the past months pleading with me to find you a copy of this album. And I've only found this ONE! Folks have offered me $100, $200, and "whatever it takes" for a copy of this album. A MINT copy sold last month on the east coast for $500 (absolutely a VERIFIED fact)! This album was issued only in the U.K. in 1969, and has MF playing with a large orchestra. It contains perhaps his most tasteful and interesting playing, from a time in his career when he was in absolutely top form. It was never issued in the U.S. This is the #1 most sought-after Maynard Ferguson LP by collectors. And this copy is NMINT. The cover is excellent, with only a couple of minor wrinkles near the corners that are almost undetectable. The vinyl looks almost new, and plays wonderfully. This is an outstanding copy.

AUCTION ITEM #2: RANDLE'S ISLAND / YOU'RE MY THRILL -- Mercury 8265-X45

It's my pleasure to be able to offer this very rare 7" 45 RPM recording of one of Maynard Ferguson's earliest appearances. On 12/21/51, Maynard entered the Radio Recorders studio in Hollywood as a member of tenor sax player Ben Webster's sextet to record several tracks that would be released on The Big Tenor 10" LP. Other musicians included Benny Carter, alto sax, John Kirby, bass, Jerry Wiggins, piano, and George Johnson, drums. Maynard used the pseudonym "Tiger Brown" for this session. But there's no denying that it's he playing both the stratospheric passages and the tasteful jazz solos on this album. Incredibly, these two tracks (Randle's Island and You're My Thrill) were not only issued on the LP, but also issued on this 7" 45 RPM disc. "Tiger Brown" is clearly identified on the label as the trumpet player. Other than myself, I don't know of a single MF collector who has a copy of this 45. I've seen the discographies of most of the major collectors, and not one of them has this 45 listed. The 10" LP lists for $250.00 in NMINT condition. I have no way of judging the appropriate value of this 45, but given its rarity and the fact that the LP is so costly, I'm certain that $50.00 is a very reasonable price. (I may be way too conservative on this, maybe not -- you'll be the judge.) I'm going to set the minimum bid accordingly. This 45 most certainly came in a simple Mercury brown paper sleeve originally, but as with 99% of these early 45s, that's long since gone. I put a nice, clean generic paper sleeve on it. The label looks like new -- beautiful original color, beautiful condition, with none of the typical sticker or other damage. The vinyl also looks very nice, but there is the typical surface noise that you find on these early 45s. It plays fine, with no pops or skips -- just surface noise throughout. Overall, I'd rate it as VG. So, here's your chance to own this very rare and desirable 45.

I've looked long and hard to come up with a copy of this album to sell. I finally won a copy at auction here in the U.S. -- at a pretty price. It was pressed in Czechoslovakia. This is the stereo version of the album. The cover is in excellent condition -- NMINT! The vinyl is a tiny bit noisy in places, but still is EX+, with no real problems other than this slight surface noise. Overall, let's call it NMINT-. A super copy, and a must in every serious collection. I'm starting the bidding at a very reasonable level, given the rarity of this album. Good luck!

Again, I've looked long and hard to come up with a copy of this album to sell. I finally purchased a copy the other day from a dealer in England. Sorry I don't have a better illustration. This is an English pressing, with the cover printed in London. The cover is in excellent condition, with just very minor signs of wear -- NMINT-. The vinyl has some background noise throughout, but still is EX, with no real problems other than this slight surface noise. Overall, let's call this album EX+. Talk about hard to find! I've looked all over the country for copies of this 33 1/3 RPM 12" single. I know of very, very few collectors who have one. This is the disco mix version (time 7:09) of Rocky II Disco from the Hot album. It's a white label promo record in a plain white sleeve. It was released in 1979, right at the height of the disco craze. It has the same track on both sides of the record. This copy is NMINT. If you've been looking for one, look no more! AUCTION ITEM #6: THE BALLAD STYLE OF MAYNARD FERGUSON -- CBS 63514

Once again, after many, many months of trying, I finally located another copy of The Ballad Style of Maynard Ferguson. A MINT copy sold about 5 months ago on the east coast for $500! I sold a NMINT copy (Auction Item #1) for $540 on 7/18/98. So, as you can see, this album is in heavy demand. It was issued only in the U.K. in 1969, and has MF playing with a large orchestra. It contains perhaps his most tasteful and interesting playing, from a time in his career when he was in absolutely top form. It was never issued in the U.S. This is the #1 most sought-after Maynard Ferguson LP by collectors. And this copy is NMINT-. The cover is excellent, NMINT-, with only a couple of minor spine abrasions near the corners. AUCTION ITEM #8: EUROPA JAZZ -- Europa Jazz EJ-1002

Here's a rare Italian LP simply entitled Europa Jazz. It's one of a series of Europa Jazz compilation albums from 1981 featuring various artists. This particular volume, which must be #2, according to the catalog number, features the Dizzy Gillespie Quintet, Sarah Vaughan, the Charlie Mingus Sextet, and of course, Maynard Ferguson. Maynard's tracks are Pilatus and Foggy Night, which were originally issued on the equally hard-to-find Maynard & Gustav album. There is some dispute in the collector community about these tracks. Maynard definitely had a part in their production, but they're from side one of the Maynard and Gustav LP, and he only is apparent soloing on side 2 of the original LP. Thus, be aware that even though MF is on the cover of this LP, and even though he is attributed as being on these tunes, there's a controvery about it. Nevertheless, this is only the second copy of this LP I've seen. The other is in my collection! It has a gatefold cover which opens up, and there's a great photo of MF on the inside, looking rather "mod" in a paisley vest. The cover on this one is very nice, but there is definite record ring wear, front and back, and the faintest hint of some brown toning at the top of the cover. Still, I'm being very conservative in rating the cover as EX. It's quite nice. The vinyl is excellent -- NMINT- condition. Overall, I'd rate this copy as EX+ -- a nice, collectible copy. If it were NMINT instead of EX, I'd start the bidding at $50.00 or more.

AUCTION ITEM #9: MAYNARD FERGUSON, THE HOT CANARY / WHAT'S NEW -- Capitol 6F-1713

Maynard's first big hit recording with members of the Stan Kenton Orchestra was The Hot Canary, written by Paul Nero just for Maynard, and recorded at Capitol Studios in Hollywood on 5/31/51, along with the track What's New. The collectors who've heard both The Hot Canary and What's New can tell you that this is Maynard at his stratospheric and technical best. Absolutely unbelievable! This is the 45 RPM version of these tracks. (They were also issued as a 78.) Originally this came in a paper picture sleeve. I have one in its original sleeve in my collection (badly stained), and I've seen one pictured on the net, but I'll bet there aren't five of these original sleeves left in existence. If it was in the original sleeve, the minimum bid would be AT LEAST $200.00! This copy, like almost all others, is missing the original sleeve, and it's in just a plain, generic sleeve. The vinyl on this copy is the second best I've ever seen. There is some definite surface noise, but no damage. It's EX+, and is in the top 10% of the copies available. Truly a RARE, ultra collectible 45, in excellent condition, and one of the most sought-after 45s by MF collectors.

AUCTION ITEM #10: MAYNARD FERGUSON, DIMENSIONS (ORIGINAL 10" LP)-- EmArcy MG 26024

Here's one of the two 10" LPs MF originally released on the EmArcy label. (The other was Hollywood Party.) I get copies of this from time to time, and they usually have so-so covers and vinyl, and sell for about $35.00 to $40.00. The cover on this copy, however, is the best I've ever seen (just as nice as the one in my personal collection). Unlike most of these early EmArcy LPs, which have a lot of brown toning around the edges of the cover, this one is pristine. The only problem with the cover is a 1" spine crack at the bottom center which someone has expertly glued back together. It's almost imperceptible. The cover is simply outstanding -- the best you'll find -- NMINT condition! The vinyl is excellent, as well. There is very minor background noise in places, but the fidelity is simply outstanding. The vinyl is definitely NMINT. So here's one of the finest extant copies of this original, early EmArcy recording, with the original silver "drummer" on the blue label. Overall, this copy is NMINT!!! It's destined for the very finest of collections. If you have a lesser copy, you won't regret upgrading to this showpiece.

AUCTION ITEM #11: STAN KENTON, ONE NIGHT STAND WITH STAN KENTON, VOLUME 2 -- Joyce LP-1016

This LP was issued in the 1970s. It's an FM radio transcription of the Kenton Orchestra from The Steel Pier, Atlantic City, New Jersey, late July, 1951. This is one of the very hardest LPs for most MF collectors to find. MF is on the cover with Stan Kenton and four other band members. He, and the other band members, are wearing plaid tuxedos! Hey, it was 1951! Frankly, I like it better than the disco look. Anyway, the liner notes say the following: "Particularly outstanding ... is MAYNARD FERGUSON, which in this performance is not only technically more correct, missing as it does the famous low note clam in the middle of the Capitol record, but also is played by a more relaxed and happier band (as evidenced by their shouts of encouragement and approval audible here), than is possible within the more ordered and formal confines of a recording studio. For other tasty bits of MF, listen to his work on VIVA PRADO or the coda to INTERMISSION RIFF." That about sums it up. Now understand that this is a transcription of a live broadcast, probably taped from FM radio. It's not studio quality. But it's RARE, and the liner notes are correct -- this version of the tune Maynard Ferguson is technically better than the studio version. The cover on this copy has a 2" spine split up upper center, and a 1/2" spine crack at bottom center. It's still a nice looking cover, EX+. The vinyl is very nice. There are no real problems -- just an occasional bit of surface noise. Given the source of this recording, it still sounds good, and is at least EX++, maybe even NMINT-. Overall, this copy is EX++.

This is the fantastic Canadian LP, recorded May 19, 1967 at the Canadian Pavilion of Expo 67, and released later that year. You may have the CD, but most collectors don't have this rare, original LP. The artwork is unique to the LP -- I guess they didn't think this would sell, so they re-did it for the CD. Frankly, I like the LP artwork much better! This LP is in super condition! The cover, which has both English and French text, is NMINT, with just a couple of super minor wrinkles which aren't even worth describing. The vinyl is in great condition, too, with just a tiny bit of surface noise in places. It's EX++ to NMINT-. This is one of the nicest copies extant. Overall it's NMINT-. This is a crisp, clean recording, needed by every serious collector.

AUCTION ITEM #13: MONTREUX SUMMIT VOLUME 1 SPECIAL RADIO EDITION -- Columbia AS395

The album Montreux Summit Volume 1 isn't rare at all. But Columbia sent out a special version of this record to radio stations, and this is it. It's very, very hard to find. This is only the second copy I've ever had. It has some of the same tunes on it as the "public" version, but it's only one LP, not two. MF solos beautifully on "Andromeda," and can be heard on other tracks, as well. It's got a white label, and the cover, which is otherwise like the "public" version, has the words "Special Radio Edition" printed as part of the design. A very rare and desirable MF collectible. AUCTION ITEM #15: MAYNARD FERGUSON, THE HOT CANARY / WHAT'S NEW -- Capitol 7-1713 (78 RPM)

This is the 78 RPM 10" version of these tracks. (They were also issued as a 45.) I've been told that originally this 78 came in a paper picture sleeve. I've never seen one! If it does exist, this is missing the original sleeve, and it's in just a plain, generic sleeve. The vinyl on this copy is very nice. I don't have a 78 RPM turntable, but I played it at 45 RPM, and the sound quality was EX for this era, with just a bit of surface noise throughout. Truly an ultra collectible 78, in excellent condition, and one of the most sought-after records by MF collectors.

AUCTION ITEM #16: MAYNARD FERGUSON, LOVE LOCKED OUT / BAND AIN'T DRAGGIN' -- Capitol 1269 (78 RPM)

Here are two tracks MF recorded for Capitol in the early '50s! This is the 78 RPM 10" version of these tracks. It's in just a plain, generic sleeve. The vinyl on this copy is very nice. Although I don't have a 78 RPM turntable, and thus couldn't grade it by playing it, it visually grades at EX+ or better. Truly an ultra collectible 78, in excellent condition, and a highly sought-after record by MF collectors.

AUCTION ITEM #17: MAYNARD FERGUSON, GONNA FLY NOW (THEME FROM "ROCKY") / THE FLY -- CBS/SONY 06SP 150

Here's MF on the Japanese 7" picture cover 45 RPM recording of Rocky and The Fly. Actually, just like the U.S. version, it comes in a generic paper sleeve. But the Japanese CBS/Sony versions have a picture insert that sits in front of the record's paper sleeve in a clear plastic outer sleeve, so it looks like you've got a picture cover. Very interesting. Someone got the negative of MF backwards on this, and he looks like he's playing a left-handed trumpet! Condition of the picture insert, generic paper cover, and the vinyl are all NMINT to NMINT+!!! Very, very nice condition. Almost impossible to find in the U.S., and not all that prevalent in Japan, either.

AUCTION ITEM #18: VIDO MUSSO, MAYNARD FERGUSON, EDDIE SAFRANSKI -- THREE KENTON'S BE BOPPERS GROUPS 1947-50 -- Unique Jazz UJ 36

This is a rare Italian import LP which I've never seen in the U.S. I got my copy in Australia; this copy comes from Japan. It was probably issued in the late '70s or early '80s, and it contains four ULTRA RARE tracks featuring MF, all recorded 9/13/50 in Los Angeles, and all fantastic. The tracks include Short Wave, Take the "A" Train, Love Locked Out, and The Band Ain't Draggin'. Unfortunatley, in transit from Japan, this copy sustained bent corners in the upper left and upper right on the cover. What was a NMINT cover is now just EX, due to the two bends. The vinyl, however, is NMINT++ -- it looks never-played. If you don't have this one in your collection, I suggest you consider bidding seriously. Even with the bent corners on the cover, this one is ultra, ultra hard to find. I'm not sure when, or if, I'll have another. If it weren't for the bent corners, I'd start the bidding at $75.00.

AUCTION ITEM #19: MAYNARD FERGUSON, MAIN TITLE (FROM THE 20TH CENTURY-FOX FILM "STAR WARS") / OASIS -- CBS/SONY 06SP 187

Here's MF on the Japanese 7" picture cover 45 RPM recording of Star Wars and Oasis. Actually, just like the U.S. version, it comes in a generic paper sleeve. But the Japanese CBS/Sony versions have a picture insert that sits in front of the record's paper sleeve in a clear plastic outer sleeve, so it looks like you've got a picture cover. Very interesting. And there, on the cover, right along with Maynard, are R2D2 and CP30. Condition of the picture insert, generic paper cover, and the vinyl are all NMINT to NMINT+!!! Very, very nice condition. Almost impossible to find in the U.S., and not all that prevalent in Japan, either. As you can imagine, the Star Wars collectors are keen to have these, just like the Maynard collectors!!! If you don't have a copy, this may be your best chance to own one.

AUCTION ITEM #20: MAYNARD FERGUSON, THE BIG HORN -- EmArcy EP-1-6039

Maynard issued just a handful of 7" picture cover EPs during the 1950s on the EmArcy label. Hollywood Party and Dimensions are the least rare. Next comes the Jam Session Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 EPs, which are pretty rare. Then lastly, Octet, Conception, and this one, THE BIG HORN -- all of which are absolutely THE HARDEST EMARCY EPs to find!!! Now, finding them is one thing, but finding them in their original picture covers is YET ANOTHER THING!!! And finding them in their original covers, in NMINT condition, is UNHEARD OF!!!! Yet ... here one is. Tracks include Willie Nillie, Hymn to Her, All God's Children Got Rhythm, Somewhere Over the Rainbow. The cover on this one is as close to MINT as you're going to find. There is just a little bit of the typical surface disturbance on the back cover that you find on all '50s-era EPs and LPs. But overall, the cover is NMINT, with no damage of any kind! Outstanding! The vinyl is EX+, with a little bit of surface noise throughout, which is typical for this era, but ... it's still excellent, with no problems. Absolutely a beautiful little EP. I expect this one will go for WELL over $100.00. I'm starting the bidding at just $75.00. If you don't have this little gem in your collection, here's your chance!

AUCTION ITEM #21: MAYNARD FERGUSON, GONNA FLY NOW -- CBS/Sony FCCP 30184

In 1992, the Sony CD Club in Japan issued this limited edition compilation CD entitled "Gonna Fly Now." It has 8 tracks: Gonna Fly Now, The Way We Were, Your Song, MacArthur Park, Birdland, For Your Eyes Only, La Fiesta, and Theme from Star Trek. It was not sold on the open market, but was ONLY available to Sony CD Club members!!! This is one of the rarest CDs of MF material ever produced. I'm shocked to have one to auction. Here's a MINT, FACTORY SEALED COPY of this rare little CD!!!!! I traded a collector for this copy, instead of paying "an arm and a leg" for it, so I'm going to start the bidding at a very reasonable level. Good luck with your bidding!

AUCTION ITEM #22: MAYNARD FERGUSON, THE BIRDLAND DREAMBAND -- RCA Bluebird 6455-2-RB

In 1987, RCA Bluebird issued a CD with 18 tracks from the original Birdland Dreamband LPs of the mid-50's. Tracks include Lady Bug, Blue Birdland, More West, The Wailing Boat, Say it with Trumpets, etc. This CD has been out of print for several years, and is now almost impossible to find. Here's a pristine copy, in NMINT+ condition -- except for the fact that it's not factory sealed, it's just like new. It's a major item for any MF collection.

AUCTION ITEM #23: MAYNARD FERGUSON, MAYNARD FERGUSON OCTET (AUSTRALIAN RELEASE) -- Esquire Mercury MG-36021

The Octet LP is by far the hardest-to-find and most expensive EmArcy LP by Maynard. They typically sell from $65.00 to $100.00, or even more, depending on condition -- that's IF you can find one! But here is the same album, pressed and released in Australia on the Esquire Mercury label. It's TEN TIMES RARER than the U.S. version, and is ultra scarce, even in Australia!!!!! The cover above is for illustration purposes only, as it's the U.S. cover. (Sorry -- I don't have a scanner or digital camera.) The Australian cover looks almost identical, except that the logo in the upper left-hand corner is somewhat different. But the Australian cover is made quite differently, with thinner card stock, and fold-over flaps on the back. The cover on this copy is EX+, in quite nice condition, with a bit of the typical brown "foxing" on the rear cover, and a little bit of brown showing at the bottom on the front. It's still a very nice cover. I've listened to the vinyl, and it's very good for 1950's vinyl, playing at EX+. Overall, this is a nice, solid record, grading out at EX+. The winner of this LP is going to have one of the rare treasures of the Maynard Ferguson collecting world!

AUCTION ITEM #24: VARIOUS ARTISTS, JAZZ USA (DUTCH RELEASE) -- CBS 85920

Here is an incredibly hard-to-find CBS compilation LP from Holland. It was released in 1982, and includes a number of CBS/Columbia artists: Bob James, Al Di Meola, Charles Earland, Stanley Clarke, Miles Davis, Weather Report, James Blood Ulmer, Wynton Marsalis, Ramsey Lewis, and OF COURSE, Maynard Ferguson. Maynard's tune is "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough," from the Hollywood album. I'm sorry I don't have a scan, but let me describe it to you. It's a red, white, and blue cover with a U.S. Flag superimposed over a map of the United States. Condition of the cover is very, very nice, with the only problem being a minor bend in the upper left-hand corner. You can't even see it from the front, but it's visible from the back. There's also the slightest abrasion on the very tip of the bottom right-hand corner and the top right-hand corner. But I'm being ultra picky here. The cover still is super, and rates a NMINT-. The vinyl is at least NMINT. Overall, this one is NMINT. This is a MUST for every serious Maynard Ferguson collector.

AUCTION ITEM #25: MAYNARD FERGUSON, TRUMPET RHAPSODY -- PAUSA 7037

First this record was issued as Maynard '69, then was re-released as Trumpet Rhapsody with a blue cover on the MPS label, then was re-released on this PAUSA label with a brown cover. This is BY FAR the rarest of them all. This is only the second copy I've ever personally seen. Tunes include It's Almost Like Being in Love, Knarf, Ole, Dancing Nitely, Tenderly, Whisper Not, and Got the Spirit. The cover on this copy is still in its original shrink wrap! It's really excellent! NMINT condition. The vinyl is NMINT, as well. It's really, really a great copy. (Trust me. You'd want ANY copy of this if you could get it! So much the better that this one is NMINT!)

AUCTION ITEM #26: MAYNARD FERGUSON, MAYNARD FERGUSON'S GREATEST HITS (JAPANESE RELEASE) -- CBS Sony 25AP2026

This Japanese LP was released in 1981, was never released in the U.S., has a unique cover, and includes the tunes Gonna Fly Now, Theme from Star Trek, Theme from Galactica, Main Title from Star Wars, Birdland, Fantasy, Everybody Loves the Blues, and You Can Have Me Anytime. The cover on this copy is really nice, but does have a few detracting features -- slight ring wear at the top on both the front and the back, as well as a 1/2" spine split at upper right and a bit of spine cracking at top center (although it's just cracked through the surface paper, not the cardboard). Still, the cover is NMINT-, a quite nice and collectible cover. The vinyl is NMINT. Just pristine! And the original paper insert, describing all the tracks in Japanese, is still inside the cover. Outstanding! Hard to find now in Japan, and almost non-existant in the U.S., this is a unique LP that every collector needs in their collection.

AUCTION ITEM #27: MAYNARD FERGUSON, DIMENSIONS (ORIGINAL 10" LP)-- EmArcy MG 26024

Here's one of the two 10" LPs MF originally released on the EmArcy label. (The other was Hollywood Party.) I get copies of this from time to time, and they usually have so-so covers and vinyl, and sell for about $35.00 to $40.00. The cover on this copy, however, is the second best I've ever seen (see Auction Item #10, which was just very slightly better than this copy). Unlike most of these early EmArcy LPs, which have a lot of brown toning around the edges of the cover, this one has just a very small amount, and only at the very edges. Other than this, the cover is almost MINT. The cover is simply outstanding -- one of the best you'll find -- NMINT condition! The vinyl is excellent, as well. There is very minor background noise in places, but the fidelity is simply outstanding. The vinyl is definitely NMINT-, and is NMINT in places. So here's one of the finest extant copies of this original, early EmArcy recording, with the original silver "drummer" on the blue label. Overall, this copy is NMINT- to NMINT!!! It's destined for the very finest of collections. If you have a lesser copy, you won't regret upgrading to this excellent LP.

Here's the very first copy of this LP that I've been able to find for sale. It's a 1984 pressing on the Artistry label, and is very, very rare. And ... it's an excellent pressing. The cover on this copy is NMINT -- really nice! And the vinyl is NMINT as well. If it's been played, it's only been one or two times. The tunes are Goodbye Mr. Chops, Lady Bug, Maynard the Fox, More West, etc. An outstanding LP.

AUCTION ITEM #30: MAYNARD FERGUSON, THE BEST OF MAYNARD FERGUSON (ORIGINAL CD) -- Columbia CK 36361

Although it's extremely common in LP format, the CD version of this "Best of" album is nearly impossible to find. It's been out of print for several years, and I almost never see a copy. Check your collection. I'll bet you don't have one unless you were actively collecting MF albums when it was released. Even then, you may have "passed" on the CD because you already had the LP in your collection. So this one is a relative rarity. This copy is still sealed, in MINT condition!

I used to think this album wasn't too terribly rare. But I've been "combing the woods for them," and I just can't find them anymore. This copy is a real beauty. It's got a NMINT cover, with the only detracting factor being a sort of very faint crease mark. I'm not sure what it is, but it looks like maybe just the slightest factory defect from the way the cover paper was glued to the cardboard backing. It's barely noticeable, and would definitely rate a NMINT+ if it weren't for this small detail. Nevertheless, it's a super clean cover. The vinyl is fantastic, as well -- NMINT! Overall, this one is NMINT. A pristine, highly desirable copy.

Here's a VERY RARE 12" single LP of the Theme from "Battlestar Galactica." It's got the same track on both sides, timing at 5:56, and it's a white label promo version in a plain white 12" single cover which is pristine. The vinyl is super clean, NMINT condition. The only detracting factor is a tiny date stamp (Nov 30 1978) on one side of the record label. Other than this, it's fantastic! I've only seen this record pop up twice in the past few years, and the other copy is in my collection!

AUCTION ITEM #33: MAYNARD FERGUSON, DIZZY GILLESPIE, MILES DAVIS, TRUMPETS ON HIGH! -- Tall Tree 6002

Folks, I've gotten DOZENS of want lists from collectors asking for this record. I normally just can't find them! This is a compilation LP from the 1980s with Maynard playing on the tracks Take the 'A' Train, What's New, The Hot Canary, Short Wave, Love Locked Out, and Band Ain't Draggin'!!!!! These are THE GREATEST tunes recorded by MF in the early 1950s. And here they all are in a single LP. One of these sold at auction just last week for more than $175.00, plus shipping and handling. I'll price my copy resonably for the starting bid, but I expect it to sell for $200.00 or more. Don't miss out on this opportunity to get an ULTRA rare MF LP!!! The cover is NMINT (with the only detracting factor being just the slightest bend in the upper left-hand corner), and the vinyl is NMINT or BETTER!!! A really nice, collectible copy!

Minimum Bid: $150.00
Bidding Increment: $10.00
Auction Closing Date: Saturday, August 14, 1999, 7:00 p.m. Pacific Time
Terms: Payment in Full by Saturday, August 21, 1999

AUCTION ITEM #34: MAYNARD FERGUSON, GONNA FLY NOW (THEME FROM "ROCKY") / THE FLY (JAPANESE PRESSING) -- CBS/SONY 06SP 150

(See lot #36 for the Dutch version of this same 45.)

Minimum Bid: $30.00
Bidding Increment: $2.00

Terms: Payment in Full by Saturday, October 16, 1999

AUCTION ITEM #35: MAYNARD FERGUSON, MAYNARD FERGUSON'S GREATEST HITS (JAPANESE RELEASE) -- CBS Sony 25AP2026

The cover on this copy is really nice, but does have a few detracting features -- slight ring wear at the top on both the front and the back, as well as a 1" spine crack at top center (although it's just cracked through the surface paper, not the cardboard). Still, the cover is NMINT-, a quite nice and collectible cover. The vinyl has a couple of very light surface scratches. I played through these passages, and except for five almost imperceptible clicks on the track Battlestar Gallactica, they don't affect play in any way. Overall, the sound quality is absolutely fantastic, and the vinyl definitely rates a NMINT- to NMINT rating. And the original paper insert, describing all the tracks in Japanese, is still inside the cover. Outstanding! I'm going to rate this copy as NMINT- to NMINT overall. Hard to find now in Japan, and almost non-existant in the U.S., this is a unique LP that every serious collector needs in their collection.

AUCTION ITEM #36: MAYNARD FERGUSON, GONNA FLY NOW (THEME FROM "ROCKY") / THE FLY (DUTCH PRESSING) -- CBS 5106

Lot #34 is the Japanese version of the Gonna Fly Now 7" 45 RPM record. This is the Dutch version. It has a unique picture cover, and is really quite attractive. The cover on this one is in great shape, with no real problems, but there are a couple of minor creases in the thin cover paper. Still, it's a NMINT- to NMINT cover. The vinyl is NMINT-, as well, and plays great. Overall, let's call it NMINT-. It's a nice, attractive copy of this little gem.

AUCTION ITEM #37: ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK, LA PRIMA NOTTE DI QUIETE -- Sugar Music SLCS-7265

Here's MF on an Italian film soundtrack CD, pressed in Japan in 1995. This is an extremely elusive item. Several on-line CD stores say they can back-order this item for you, but no cigar. I tried for two years to get a copy (other than the one that's in my personal collection). Finally, a Japanese collector traded me this copy that he was able to find tucked away in a small record store in Japan. It's in the origianl shrink wrap, so it's in FACTORY SEALED, MINT condition. I've seen a copy sell for more than $150.00 on the Internet. And no wonder. Maynard is the primary soloist on this soundtrack, and he does some interesting and tasteful playing. We're just lucky that some wise Japanese record producer decided to print up some copies of this CD.
