SHORTY ROGERS AND HIS ORCHESTRA, THE BIG SHORTY ROGERS EXPRESS -- RCA Victor LPM-1350
Here's the classic Shorty Rogers LP, The Big Shorty Rogers Express, with Shorty sitting on the front of a Santa Fe locomotive on the front cover. Maynard plays on the tracks Coop de Graas, Infinity Promenade, Short Stop, and Boar-jibu (recorded 3/26/53), and Contours, Tale of an African Lobster, Chiquito Loco, and Sweetheart of Sigmund Freud (recorded 4/2/53). This one was released in 1957, and lists for $60.00 in NMINT condition.
COPY #1. The cover on this copy looks pretty nice from the front, with just the faintest hint of surface wear visible. But the rest of the cover isn't too nice. There's transparent tape on all three spines, the original owner's name written on the back, and some "doodling" in ink on the back. The cover is just VG-. The vinyl is only VG. Overall, this one is just VG- to VG -- definitely not a first rate copy. Due to the problems, you can have this normally very expensive LP for just $4.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this copy has a 6" seam split at bottom right; some water staining, which is mainly visible on the back only, and some ring wear, mainly visible on the back. From the front it's a very nice looking cover, but due to the damage, I'm rating it just GOOD+. The vinyl is covered with lots of fine scratches and surface scuffs, which cause it to play with definite background noise. It's just GOOD to GOOD+, as well. Overall, this is a below average copy, in the GOOD range. It looks pretty nice, however, so would make a nice space filler until you could get a better copy. So here's you chance to get this normally very expensive LP for just $2.00.
COPY #3. The cover on this one has super clean and nice front paper. There's a seam crack beginning to form at bottom center, but it's minor. There's a bit of edge wear, and on the back, a bit of surface wear and a crease in the backing paper. It came from the factory that way. Although this cover looks NMINT from the front, I'm going to call it a more conservative EX due to the few minor issues I've noted above. The vinyl is fairly nice but there are several light surface scratches and some scuffs. I've played it and it sounds great, with just a little background noise in places. Let's call it EX-. Overall, this copy is EX- to EX. It's $8.00.
SHORTY ROGERS AND HIS ORCHESTRA, "BLUES EXPRESS" (FRENCH IMPORT) -- RCA Masters FXL1 7234
Here's a French re-issue LP of the classic Shorty Rogers LP, The Big Shorty Rogers Express, with Shorty sitting on the front of a Santa Fe locomotive on the front cover. The original LP was released in 1957, and lists for $60.00 in NMINT condition. This French release dates to about 1980, and it's in a slick paper, gatefold cover, with excellent vinyl. It's really a super pressing. A NMINT copy should fetch around $40.00.
COPY #1. This is the first copy of this French import LP I've had in some time. The cover on this one is clean and nice -- NMINT. The vinyl is absolutely PRISTINE!!! It appears to be never-played. Just to be on the safe side, I'll shy away from calling it MINT, but it's definitely NMINT++!!! Overall, this copy is NMINT+. $25.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one is super clean and nice -- NMINT+. The vinyl is NMINT. Overall, this one is NMINT to NMINT+. $22.00.
COPY #3. The cover on this one is a clean and nice NMINT. The vinyl is a pristine NMINT+! Overall, this sopy is NMINT to NMINT+. It's yours for $22.00.

SHORTY ROGERS AND HIS GIANTS VOL. 3, "BLUES EXPRESS" (FRENCH IMPORT) -- RCA Jazz Line NL 89502
Here's a French re-issue LP of the classic Shorty Rogers LP, The Big Shorty Rogers Express. This one has a predominently red cover, but does have a small photo vignette with Shorty sitting on the front of a Santa Fe locomotive. The original LP was released in 1957, and lists for $60.00 in NMINT condition. This French release dates to about 1980, and it's in a slick paper, standard cover, with excellent vinyl. It's really a super pressing. A MINT copy should fetch around $45.00.
COPY #1. The cover on this copy has a few very minor creases along the edges (typical of these thin, European covers) and a tiny bit of edge wear. Still, it's easily NMINT. The vinyl has a couple of light scuffs. It's NMINT-. Overall, this one is NMINT- to NMINT. $20.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one looks like it had a thin, even strip of laminate professionally applied to all four edges. (It's definitely laminate, not tape.) I understand many European collectors do this to preserve the condition of the edges, and it WORKS! This is otherwise a pristine, ultra clean and nice NMINT+ cover. The vinyl is likewise a clean and nice NMINT+. Just a super copy. Do be aware of the laminated edges! Because American collectors usually shy away from any alterations at all, I'm going to mark this down to a low price of $12.00.
COPY #3. The cover on this one is pristine -- like new -- except for a nice clean core hole at upper left -- a cut-out item. This reduces an otherwise NMINT cover to just EX. The vinyl is almost certainly MINT, NEVER PLAYED. Overall, it's EX++ to NMINT-. Due to the core hole it's just $10.00.

SHORTY ROGERS AND HIS ORCHESTRA, SHORTY ROGERS COURTS THE COUNT (U.K. RELEASE) -- His Master's Voice CLP 1041
Here's the classic Shorty Rogers LP, Courts the Count, in the original release from England. Maynard plays on the tracks Topsy, Basie Eyes, It's Sand, Man, and Doggin' Around (2/2/54), Jump for Me, Over and Out, Down for Double, and Swingin' the Blues (2/9/54), and H&J, Tickletoe, Taps Miller, and Walk, Don't Run (3/3/54). The original U.S. pressing was released in 1954, and lists for $75.00 in NMINT condition. This U.K. release apears to date to the mid-1950s.
COPY #1. The cover on this copy has some significant damage. It's torn in the upper right and bottom right corners, has clear tape on both seams and the spine, and has visible wear and damage pretty-much everywhere except for the center of the front cover, which remarkably, looks quite nice. Still, this cover is only GOOD (which in English, not record-speak, means not good). The vinyl is OK, but nothing great. It's just average -- VERY GOOD. You can take this off my hands for $3.00 since it's just a space filler. (I wouldn't ask that much, but this U.K. pressing is actually quite rare.

This is a very hard LP to find, and nice NMINT copies sell in the $45.00 range.
COPY #1. The cover on this copy is super clean and nice -- NMINT to NMINT+. The vinyl is just lustrous, and without a doubt has never been played. It's NMINT++!!! Overall, this copy is NMINT+ to NMINT++. A beauty, priced at $20.00.

I understand many European collectors do this to preserve the condition of the edges, and it WORKS! This is otherwise a pristine, ultra clean and nice NMINT+ cover. The vinyl shows absolutely NO signs of having been played. There's not a single spindle mark on the labels, and the vinyl is absolutely pristine. I'm going to go out on a limb here and call it MINT!!! Just a super copy. Do be aware of the laminated edges! Because American collectors usually shy away from any alterations at all, I'm going to mark this down to a low price of $13.00.

This is an outstanding pressing, and is a MUST in every Maynard Ferguson collection.
COPY #1. The cover on this copy has a small saw cut in the lower right-hand corner (a cut-out item). It also has a dime-sized area where there's some price sticker residue. Otherwise, it would be rated NMINT+. Given these problems, just EX+. The vinyl is NMINT. Overall, this copy is NMINT-. Just $11.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this copy has just a couple of extremely minor bumps on the upper seam. It's absolutely beautiful -- NMINT to NMINT+. The vinyl is NMINT+. Overall, this copy is one of the best you'll find, in NMINT to NMINT+ condition. $17.00.

Through the shrink wrap I can see a minor corner bend in the bottom, left-hand corner, and the very tips of the other three corners look like they may be just a tiny bit blunted, as well. Still, the cover would rate at least a NMINT if it were unwrapped, and the vinyl is brand new, MINT condition. Yours for $18.00.
COPY #6. The cover on this copy has just a couple of extremely minor blemishes in a couple of places. It's still very, very nice -- NMINT. The vinyl shows no signs of ever being played, but there's a sleeve scuff on one side of one disc. Still, it's NMINT+. This nice copy is yours for $14.00

A relatively rare and very desirable LP.
COPY #1. The cover on this copy is easily NMINT, with the only problems being just the very first hint of some ring wear at top center, and a very slight bend to the very tip of the bottom right-hand corner. Both are almost undetectable. Otherwise, it's a like-new cover. The vinyl is likewise NMINT, and appears that it's almost never been played. So this is a super, clean, NMINT copy of this very desirable LP. $30.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one is really PRISTINE!!! NMINT+. The vinyl is just as nice, NMINT+!!! Overall, this is a fantastic, NMINT+ copy. Almost like new, you'll be hard-pressed to find one nicer. $40.00.

This LP was released in 1957, and lists for $60.00 in NMINT condition. It REALLY SWINGS!!! GREAT big band jazz!!!
COPY #1. The cover on this copy has a 1/4" bend and seam split at upper right -- relatively insignificant. Other than this, it's nearly perfect, and rates a NMINT- overall. The vinyl has a few light surface marks, but plays well. It's at least EX+. Overall, this one is EX+ to NMINT-. $8.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one has a bit of wrinkling in the upper left and upper right corners, which is only really visible from the rear. Still, it's a clean, nice cover -- NMINT-. The vinyl has some very light surface marks, but plays well. It's EX+. Overall, this copy is EX+ to NMINT-. $8.00.

The vinyl has a few ultra light surface scratches on side 2 only. Side 1 is nearly flawless. It's easily NMINT- to NMINT. Overall, this one rates a NMINT-. It's a very nice copy. $11.00.
