Bud Shank LPs with Maynard Ferguson
BUD SHANK WITH MAYNARD FERGUSON, STU WILLIAMSON, AND BOB ENEVOLDSON -- Crown CLP 5311
Here's Maynard playing with Bud Shank on the tracks Valve in Head, Cool Fool, Blues in the Surf, Mobile, Have Blues will Travel, Tertia, and Theme. There tracks were recorded in about 1954, and feature Maynard on valve trombone. Many of the tracks were originally issue on the 10" LP entitled Bud Shank and Three Trombones. That LP is $150.00! So here's your chance to get these tracks in a c.1960s re-issue LP, in even better fidelity than the original. This is fantastic, West Coast jazz at its finest! This is the MONO version of this LP.
COPY #1. The cover on this one has the original owner's name written in the upper right-hand corner. There's also a bit of record ring wear. The spine is cracked or split in about 4 different places. This reduces the condition to just VG-. The vinyl has the original owner's name written on the label, but otherwise it's EX+. Let's rate this one VG+ to EX- overall, at just $4.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one has yellowing transparent tape on the top seam and spine. There is also some definite record ring wear on the front. This reduces the cover to just VG. The vinyl is quite nice -- EX+. Let's rate this one as EX- overall, just $5.00.
COPY #3. The cover on this one is very nice, with no real problems -- just a bit of surface wear. It's EX+. The vinyl is EX+, as well. A nice, solid, collectible copy. $7.00.
COPY #4. The cover on this one is relatively clean and nice. The only problems are a 1" seam crack at upper center and a 1" spine crack at left middle. Still, it's a NMINT- cover. The vinyl is a seldom-played NMINT. Overall, this copy is NMINT- to NMINT. Yours for $9.00.
BUD SHANK WITH MAYNARD FERGUSON, STU WILLIAMSON, AND BOB ENEVOLDSON -- Crown CST 311
This is the STEREO version of this LP. From my experience, it's MUCH rarer than the MONO version.
COPY #1. The cover on this one has a touch of surface wear, but it's better than most copies. I had to repair both the top seam and spine due to splits. Still, it's a very nice looking cover, and rates an EX-, even with the repairs. The vinyl would be NMINT-, but there is a very small bit of one label missing at top. Looks like it just wasn't applied properly at the factory. But to be fair, let's downgrade the disc to just EX+. Overall, even with the minor flaws, this is a nice, solid LP, in EX condition. Due to the flaws, I'll just price it at $6.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one has some record ring wear. Otherwise, it's solid. Let's call it EX+. The vinyl is NMINT-. Overall, this copy is EX++. A nice, solid, collectible copy. $8.00.
COPY #3. The cover on this one has a few very minor brown spots along the bottom edge, a few wrinkles in the paper on the top seam, and a little seperation where the cover paper was glued a bit "off" in the upper left-hand corner. All these are VERY minor issues, as it's still a very clean and nice cover, in the NMINT- range. The vinyl is NMINT. Overall, this copy is NMINT- to NMINT. One of the best copies I've seen ... $9.00.
COPY #4. The cover on this one is just absolutely pristine, and I'm sure it was just recently removed from the shrink wrap. The only problem is that the backing paper was attached a little bit crooked at the factory. It's on a slight angle. Still, this is a NMINT cover, and I would call it NMINT+ if it wasn't for the slight problem with the backing paper. The vinyl appears to be never-played. Let's call it NMINT+, just to be on the safe side. Overall, this copy is NMINT to NMINT+. It's $10.00.
VARIOUS ARTISTS, PACIFIC JAZZ RECORDS HIGH FIDELITY DISC JOCKEY EDITION -- Pacific Jazz DJ-1
Folks, here's an ULTRA RARE Pacific Jazz demo LP from the mid 1950s. It was strictly designed to send out to DJs in order to get air time for Pacific Jazz tunes. It comes in a custom cover with a whole lot of printing on it, both front and back. The front cover has a graphic of a trumpet player, and text describing the intent of the LP. The back cover is a well-designed play list for the DJs. Included is MF with Bud Shank on the 3 Trombones tune Little Girl Blue. MF is specifically credited on this tune in the liner notes. And folks, I'm not kidding about this being ultra rare. They were pressed in a very small quantity, and most copies are now long gone. If I have one posted, snag it while you can.
COPY #1. Here's the first copy I've ever had for sale on this website, and only the second copy I've ever seen. The cover, like most that resided in record station libraries, is not pristine. It's got a quarter-sized spot of discoloration at upper right, numerous small creases in the thin cover paper, 4" of clear tape on the center of the spine, and some light ring wear, both front and back. Also on the back someone wrote "7.50" at upper left in ink. So the cover is rough. Still, it looks pretty nice, and is just as nice as the other copy I found that now resides in my personal collection. I'd give the cover a VG+ -- far from perfect, but quite decent. The vinyl has seen some definite wear, with a number of scuffs and light surface scratches present. It plays with some definitely surface noise. I'd rate it as VG-. Overall, this copy is maybe an average VG. If this one were NMINT, I'd ask $75.00. It's THAT RARE! In this condition, it's yours for $25.00.
COPY #2. Here's the second copy of this rare DJ LP that I've ever had for sale. The cover on this one is a bit rough. Someone wrote the name in ink at upper left, there's some record ring wear, and there's some light staining along the edges. On the back, the ring wear is more pronounced. I'd give this cover a VG+ -- rough, but as good as any of the three copies I've seen. The disc has clean and nice labels, but the vinyl itself has quite a few light surface scratches that translate to crackling and background noise on playback, especially in the softer passages. I'd rate the vinyl is VG. Overall, this copy is in the VG range. If this rare LP were NMINT, I'd ask $100.00. In this condition, $25.00.
BUD SHANK, THE TALENTS OF BUD SHANK -- Kimberly Jazz Series 11025
Here's a STEREO version of MF with Bud Shank on the tunes Wailing Vessel, Cool Fool, Little Girl Blue, You Don't Know What Love Is, and Valve in Head. Great MF trombone playing with Bob Enevoldsen and Stu Williamson!
COPY #1. The cover on this copy is a super clean and nice NMINT+. The vinyl is likewise clean and nice, but there one spot on the record where there are a few light surface scratches. Let's call it NMINT-. Overall, this copy is in the NMINT range. Yours for $10.00.
A STUDY OF BUD SHANK, WITH MAYNARD FERGUSON, STU WILLIAMSON, BOB ENEVOLDSON -- United US-7806
This appears to be an electronically remastered STEREO re-issue of the Crown CLP 5311 LP, probably from the 1970s. It has a different, purple cover. It contains the tracks Valve in Head, Cool Fool, Blues in the Surf, Mobile, Have Blues will Travel, Tertia, and Theme. There tracks were recorded in about 1954, and feature Maynard on valve trombone. Many of the tracks were originally issue on the 10" LP entitled Bud Shank and Three Trombones. That LP is $150.00! So here's your chance to get these tracks in a c.1970s re-issue LP! This is fantastic, West Coast jazz at its finest!
COPY #1. This is the first copy of this LP I've had in some time. The cover on this one shows just a hint of record ring wear on the top of the front cover. Otherwise, it's pristine! Let's call it NMINT-, but any dealer I know would call it NMINT. The vinyl is an absolutely pristine NMINT+, and I'm pretty sure it's never-played. Overall, this copy is easily NMINT. It's super clean! $12.00.
VARIOUS ARTISTS, JAZZ WEST COAST -- Jazz West Coast JWC-500
This is a fantastic compilation album of various West Coast jazz artists, released in the mid-'50s. This one books for $150.00 in NMINT condition, due to the fantastic recordings, the relative rarity, and the collectability of this LP! One of the tracks is "Wailing Vessel," by Bud Shank and Three Trombones. And, of course, Maynard was one of the trombones. This "Wailing Vessel" track differs from the ones on the other recordings, as this was an alternate master. So to have ALL the MF Three Trombones tracks, you need this great compilation LP!
COPY #1. The cover on this one has a 4" seam repair at bottom right, 2" seam split at upper right, a small sticker tear on the front cover, a small sticker tear on the back cover, and just a bit of surface wear overall. Due to these problems, a relatively nice looking cover is just average -- VG. The vinyl is VG+ to EX-. So this is NOT a first rate copy, but rates a VG+ overall. It's yours for $12.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one shows some signs of wear, front and back, but it's fairly minor. The bottom seam has been carefully taped with clear tape in the middle, but it's hardly noticeable. There's some seam and spine roughness. It still looks quite good, but because of these minor issues they add up to only VG+. The vinyl has many scuffs and surface scratches. I test played portions to check it out. The fidelity is quite good, but there's some surface noise, especially in the softer passages. I specifically listened to the track with MF (Wailing Vessel) and it played through very nicely. If I were only rating that track I'd call it EX- to EX. But in rating the entire disc, I'm going to rate it as VG-. Overall this one is just VG - AVERAGE. It's just $5.00.
BUD SHANK, BOB BROOKMEYER, STRINGS & TROMBONES (THE SAXOPHONE ARTISTRY OF BUD SHANK) (JAPANESE RELEASE) -- Toshiba-EMI Limited PJ-1213
The original Strings & Trombones LP was released on Pacific Jazz in the U.S. in about 1955. This is the same album, but it's a c.1980s Japanese re-issue on pure, virgin vinyl. An absolutely superb pressing!!!
COPY #1. The cover on this one is a super clean NMINT to NMINT+. The vinyl appears to have been played exactly once, and it's NMINT+. as well. Separate Japanese liner notes are also included on a paper insert. A beautiful NMINT to NMINT+ copy, this one is $30.00.
