Movie Soundtrack LPs with Maynard Ferguson

MUSIC FROM THE TELEVISION SOUND TRACK OF ANYTHING GOES AND PANAMA HATTIE -- Larynx Disc 567

On 2/28/54, Ethel Merman and Frank Sinatra were featured in a television production of the great Cole Porter musical Anything Goes. In the orchestra for this presentation was a young Maynard Ferguson. You can hear him in a number of places, but he's just ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE on the track Blow, Gabriel Blow. His solo playing on this track is just ABSOLUTELY STRATOSPHERIC!!! This is an ABSOLUTE MUST for every MF collector! I've seen these come in blue-, pink-, and yellow-background covers. (Maynard does not play on Panama Hattie -- only on Anything Goes.)
COPY #1. The cover on this one has the yellow background. There's some surface wear, and a 1" seam crack at bottom center. I'd rate the cover as EX. The vinyl is EX+. A rare and very, very desirable MF collectible, this one is $16.00. BONUS! THIS LP HAS NEVER BEEN RELEASED ON CD TO MY KNOWLEDGE, SO THIS COPY COMES WITH A TRANSCRIPTION CD OF ALL THE TRACKS RECORDED DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.
COPY #2. The cover on this one has the pink background. The cover on this one is a strong NMINT-. The vinyl is likewise NMINT-. A very, very nice copy. It's $18.00. BONUS! THIS LP HAS NEVER BEEN RELEASED ON CD TO MY KNOWLEDGE, SO THIS COPY COMES WITH A TRANSCRIPTION CD OF ALL THE TRACKS RECORDED DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.

MUSIC FROM THE TELEVISION SOUND TRACK OF ANYTHING GOES AND PANAMA HATTIE -- Sandy Hook S.H. 2043 (Release No. 43)

This is just a slightly different pressing, on a different label, than the LPs above. I just very slightly prefer this edit over the one above, although both are fine. (Maynard does not play on Panama Hattie -- only on Anything Goes.)
COPY #1. The cover on this one is super clean and nice. It's NMINT+. The vinyl appears to be MINT, NEVER PLAYED. Perhaps the best copy extant, it's $20.00. BONUS! THIS LP HAS NEVER BEEN RELEASED ON CD TO MY KNOWLEDGE, SO THIS COPY COMES WITH A TRANSCRIPTION CD OF ALL THE TRACKS RECORDED DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.

MUSIC FROM THE SOUND TRACK OF THE PARAMOUNT PICTURE PRODUCTION, THE ROSE TATTOO -- Columbia CL-727

Maynard played in the studio orchestra under the direction of Alex North on this great, 1954 classic movie soundtrack. It was released in 1955. It's based on the play, "The Rose Tattoo," by Tennessee Williams, and starred Burt Lancaster. Unfortunately for us Maynard Ferguson collectors, this one is highly sought-after by soundtrack collectors, and they've driven the list price up to $45.00 for a NMINT copy.
COPY #1. The cover on this copy is quite nice. There's a 1" seam crack at top center, and minor signs of wear a few places, but it's still, conservatively, an EX+ cover. Most dealers would call it NMINT due to its clean appearance and bright colors. The vinyl is EX+ to NMNINT- -- very clean and nice. Overall, this one is easily EX+, but actually more like EX++. Reasonably priced at $13.00.
COPY #2. Just in, the cover on this one is really nice -- NMINT! The vinyl is a solid EX- to EX, with some very light, parallel surface scratches in a few places. They don't significantly affect play. Overall, let's call this one EX+. It's $13.00.

JAZZ THEMES FROM THE WILD ONE -- Decca DL 8349

Here's the 12: LP version of the Wild One Soundtrack. It was released in 1956. Maynard was in the orchestra for this one, conducted by Leith Stevens. The front cover has a very young Marlon Brando in his motorcycle jacket from the movie. Because of the Brando link, these are very hard LPs to find. They list for $45.00 in NMINT condition in my latest Soundtrack price guide.
SORRY! NO COPIES AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.

MUSIC FROM THE SOUND TRACK OF THE ALLIED ARTISTS FILM CRIME IN THE STREETS -- Decca DL 8376

Per "Jazz on the Screen" by David Meeker, MF was on this movie soundtrack, with music by Franz Waxman. The movie starred James Whitmore, John Cassavetes, Sal Mineo, and Mark Rydell, and it was released in 1956. Unfortunately for us Maynard Ferguson collectors, this one is highly sought-after by soundtrack collectors, and they've driven the price up to $50.00 - $75.00 for a NMINT copy of this LP.
COPY #1. THIS IS A COVER ONLY. THERE IS NO DISC. If you need just a cover, or want it as a space filler until you can get the LP, this one has clear tape repairs on three corners. Otherwise, it looks quite nice. I'd rate it as VG++. It's just $2.00, and I'll toss it in for $1.00 if you buy anything else from me.

MUSIC BY ELMER BERNSTEIN FROM "THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM" -- Decca DL 78257

Although he's not listed specifically in the credits, it's agreed by most collectors that Maynard played in the section for the jazz score on this Frank Sinatra film. Shorty Rogers was the arranger for the jazz portions of the score, and brought Maynard in to help with the section work. This LP comes in several flavors. This is the STEREO re-issue from 1959. Tracks include Clark Street, Frankie Machine, The Fix, etc. There's some superb solo work by Rogers and Pete Candoli, too.
COPY #1. The cover on this copy shows some surface and spine wear, and a 1/2" spine split in the upper right corner. It's an EX- to EX cover. The vinyl has a few scuffs and one surface scratch that doesn't significantly affect play. It's EX- to EX, as well. Overall, a nice, solid EX- to EX copy. $7.00.

MUSIC FROM THE SOUND TRACK OF CECIL B. DE MILLE’S PRODUCTION, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, COMPOSED AND CONDUCTED BY ELMER BERNSTEIN -- Dot DLP 3054-D

This is a the original Dot label soundtrack album, dating to 1956. The cover on this one is a duo-fold cover, holding two LPs. I saw a copy of this album at Mr. C’s Records in Orange, California, and they wanted $150.00 for it. Obviously, I "passed" on that copy. But it’s just that nice and collectible of an album.
COPY #1. Just in, here's the original 1956 double gatefold LP. The cover on this one is very clean and nice, with the only flaws being a little light surface wear and, inside the gatefold, a 2" crack in the middle seam. The crack is only visible inside the cover. I'd rate this cover as NMINT-. It's really nice. The vinyl has a few light scuffs and scratches. I'd rate it as EX. Overall, this is a nice, solid EX+ copy. Yours for $20.00.

MUSIC FROM THE SOUND TRACK OF CECIL B. DE MILLE’S PRODUCTION, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, COMPOSED AND CONDUCTED BY ELMER BERNSTEIN -- Dot DLP 25054-D

This is a copy of the Dot label soundtrack album, dating to 1960. The cover on this one is a duo-fold cover, holding two LPs.
COPY #1. The top spines of each half have been nicely repaired with transparent tape. There is a faint record ring, as well. But the color on this cover is stunning. The cover is (at the very least) VG+. The vinyl on this copy is real nice for ‘50s-era vinyl -- at least VG+. Overall, it’s VG+. Given the tape on the top seams, and the fact that I did fairly well on the purchase, I can let this beautiful, collectible album go for just $10.00.

CECIL B. DE MILLE'S PRODUCTION, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK RECORDING -- Paramount Records PAS 1006

This the 1973 re-release of the studio recording of the Ten Commandments movie soundtrack. MF played on this double-LP session, but as with most of his movie soundtrack work, his playing is not all that visible. This one is for the real serious MF collectors only. I have two copies.
COPY #1. Condition is EX-, with a slight record wear ring front and back on the cover. Listing at $25.00 in NMINT condition, this one should be well worth $8.00.

ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK RECORDING -- PARAMOUNT PICTURES' FUNNY FACE -- Verve MGV-15001

Buddy Bregman conducted the sound track for Paramount's Funny Face in 1957, and Maynard was, of course, in on this production. The music was by George and Ira Gershwin, so you can see that it's top notch. This is the pink gatefold cover version of the soundtrack. It lists for $35.00 in NMINT condition.
COPY #1. I don't believe I've ever had a copy of this LP to sell before. The cover on this one is pretty nice, although a couple of corners are worn and there's a 2" spine crack at left. Nevertheless, it's a clean and desirable cover, rating at least an EX to EX+. The vinyl has a number of scuffs, although none are deep. It plays pretty well, with just a little background noise in places. I'd rate it as EX-. Overall, this copy is in the EX range. A nice, solid LP. $10.00.
COPY #2. Here's another nice copy of this LP. The cover is near-flawless, except for a copy of spots where the cover paper is missing on the spine. Otherwise, it's first rate. NMINT-. The vinyl is likewise NMINT-. A clean and nice copy, this one is $14.00.

ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK RECORDING -- PARAMOUNT PRESENTS BEAU JAMES, THE LIFE AND TIMES OF JIMMY WALKER -- Imperial LP-9041

Here's another studio recording from Paramount with MF in the Paramount Studio Orchestra. This movie starred Bob Hope and Vera Mile, and dates to 1957. A VERY hard LP to find!
COPY #1. The cover on this one looks great on first inspection, but a closer look reveals masking tape along the bottom seam, a cracked left spine, and a 1/2" piece of white tape in the upper right-hand corner. There's also quite a bit of surface wear visible on the back. So the cover is just VG-, even though it looks quite nice from the front. The vinyl is scuffed in places, and has a few light surface scratches. It's in the EX- range. Overall, let's call this one VG -- just an average, run of the mill copy. Still easily worth the asking price due to its rarity and desirability -- $4.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one has clean and nice front paper. On the back there's a little toning and wear visible in places. Still, it's an EX++ cover. The vinyl has a couple of very small, very light scratches on one side that don't affect play. Otherwise it's clean and nice. Easily EX++. Overall this is an EX++ copy. Very nice, it's $12.00.

MUSIC FROM THE SOUND TRACK OF PARAMOUNT'S OMAR KHAYYAM AND THE MOUNTAIN -- Decca DL 8449

Maynard played in the Paramount Studio Orchestra back in 1957 on the soundtrack from The Mountain, which is included in this 1957 Decca sound track LP. This one comes with a normal black label or a pink promo label (these two types are the most expensive) and in a re-issue version with a rainbow or multi-color label (less expensive). I've seen record dealers ask $150.00 for the original version of this record; I recently saw one sell in an on-line auction for more than $125.00. The cover is really wonderful on these, and the sound track collectors love 'em.
COPY #1. The cover on this one has come clear tape on the seams and spine, but it's not very visible. In fact, the cover looks to be NMINT, otherwise. Let's call this on EX. The vinyl has a few scuffs and light scratches which do not affect play. Overall, this one is EX. $8.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one has a little bit of writing, front and back, and the seams and spine all have some clear tape on them which is showing a bit of age. I'd rate this cover as just GOOD (which, by definition, means NOT SO HOT). The vinyl has pink PROMO labels and it's in the VG+ range. Overall, VG- to VG. It's #3.00.

THE ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK RECORDING FROM DINO -- Epic LN 3404

Maynard played in this 1957 soundtrack, and is even credited in the liner notes. It's a jazzy soundtrack for this gang-oriented feature film. It books for $75.00 in NMINT condition in the souundtrack guide, and it's understandable. I seldom see a copy of this great LP!
COPY #1. Just in, here's the first copy of this soundtrack I've ever had for sale. The front paper looks great, but on ultra close inspection, you can see a spot where a written name was carefully removed. It's hard to see, but worth mentioning. I had to repair the top seam, due to a split, but the repair is nice and hard to detect. On the back there's some surface wear and two torn (abraded) spots toward the bottom of the cover. I'd rate this cover, which looks quite nice, as only VG+ due to the several flaws. The vinyl has a few scuffs and light scratches, which don't cause any skips but can be heard a bit as background noise on playback. It's EX. Overall, this copy is EX- -- a flawed but relatively solid copy of a rare and interesting LP. Yours for just $12.00.
COPY #2. Just in, here's a nice copy of this fairly rare LP. The cover is really clean, with the only issues being some seam cracking top and bottom which have been repaired (reglued). It's still an EX++ cover. The vinyl has some light surface scratches which don't significantly affect play. It's EX-. Overall, let's call this copy a solid EX. It's $14.00
COPY #3. The cover on this one as a 1" seam crack at top center and a 1" seam crack at bottom center. There's some slight surface wear visible, but overall, it's a clean and nice cover, easily rating an EX+. The vinyl has a few scuffs and light scratches that don't affect play. It's EX. Overall, this one is EX to EX+. Quite a rare soundtrack to find, it's $15.00.

COLONNA SONORA ORIGINALE DEL FILM LA PRIMA NOTTE DI QUIETE (ITALIAN RELEASE) -- CBS-SUGAR S 65403

Maynard was a featured player, along with Gianni Basso, on this 1972 soundtrack. His picture appears on the back cover with composer Mario Nascimbene. The CDs of this recording, pressed in Japan, are hard to find. This original Italian LP is nearly impossible to find! Tracks include Titoli Di Testa, Tema Psicologico, Incontro Con Vanina, Solitudine di Daniele, Casa Abbandonata, Incontro D'Amore, Viaggio E Morte Di Daniele, and Finale.
COPY #1. The cover on this one has one has a 2" split in the middle of the spine, and another 2" split in the middle of the top seam. Otherwise this is a very clean and nice cover, with just minor wear and a couple of very minor wrinkles visible. Due to those two small seam splits, I don't feel comfortable rating it better than EX+, but it looks NMINT- to NMINT overall. The disc labels are clean and nice, and the vinyl has just a few very light surface scratches that do not significantly affect play. I listened to the entire LP tonight, and it plays very, very nicely, with great fidelity, and just a little bit of surface noise in places. Most dealers would call it NMINT, but I'm going to be conservative and call it NMINT-. So, overall, this is a solid, EX++ copy. For this copy, $100.00.
COPY #2. I've found yet another copy. As I'm sure you know, they're near-impossible to find. The cover on this one has intact and solid seams and spine, but there are several light creases visible and VERY slight record ring wear visible in just a couple of places. I think a fair rating for this cover is EX. So, overall, this is a solid, EX+ copy. I've seen these going for more than $250.00 (plus shipping and handling) in recent months. For this copy, $90.00.

COLONNA SONORA ORIGINALE DEL FILM LA PRIMA NOTTE DI QUIETE (JAPANESE RELEASE) -- EPIC ECPM-22

This is the RARE Japanese version of this soundtrack recording. It's far rarer than the Italian version, and has completely different cover graphics. Maynard was a featured player, along with Gianni Basso, on this 1972 soundtrack. The CDs of this recording, pressed in Japan, are hard to find. This original Japanese LP is nearly impossible to find! Tracks include Titoli Di Testa, Tema Psicologico, Incontro Con Vanina, Solitudine di Daniele, Casa Abbandonata, Incontro D'Amore, Viaggio E Morte Di Daniele, and Finale.
SORRY! NO COPIES AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.

ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK, “UNCLE JOE SHANNON” -- United Artists UA-LA 935-H

This is the great soundtrack from the Bert Young movie starring Maynard Ferguson in a number of outstanding solo roles. The movie was pretty awful, so the soundtrack didn’t sell well, even though Maynard’s work was outstanding. So this is a hard one to find. Nevertheless, I've been diligent in seeking them out, and usually have several for sale at any given time.
COPY #1. The cover on this one has an embossed promo stamp at upper right, as well as some surface and edge wear. It's an EX- cover. The vinyl has a lot of fine surface scratches, which won't cause skips, but will add some background noise when played, so I'm only going to rate it as VG to VG+. Overall, this copy is maybe just on the upper side of average -- VG+. Priced accordingly, $4.00. BONUS! THIS LP EXISTS ONLY ON A FAIRLY RARE 2009 CD, SO THIS COPY COMES WITH A TRANSCRIPTION CD OF ALL THE TRACKS RECORDED DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.
COPY #2. The cover and vinyl on this copy are both in super condition -- both NMINT. This is one of the nicest copies I've had in a long time. It's really clean and nice. $14.00. BONUS! THIS LP EXISTS ONLY ON A FAIRLY RARE 2009 CD, SO THIS COPY COMES WITH A TRANSCRIPTION CD OF ALL THE TRACKS RECORDED DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.
COPY #3. The cover on this copy has the embossed promo stamp at upper right, but it's still a NMINT cover. The vinyl is NMINT, as well. Overall, a nice, NMINT promo copy. $14.00. BONUS! THIS LP EXISTS ONLY ON A FAIRLY RARE 2009 CD, SO THIS COPY COMES WITH A TRANSCRIPTION CD OF ALL THE TRACKS RECORDED DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.
COPY #4. The cover on this one has the embossed promo stamp at upper right. It's got minor bends in the upper left and lower left corners, as well as a little surface wear, mainly visible on the back. It's an EX- to EX cover. The vinyl is super clean and nice -- NMINT. Overall, this copy is EX+. $10.00. BONUS! THIS LP EXISTS ONLY ON A FAIRLY RARE 2009 CD, SO THIS COPY COMES WITH A TRANSCRIPTION CD OF ALL THE TRACKS RECORDED DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.
COPY #5. The cover on this one has the embossed promo stamp at upper right. There's also a little surface wear and extremely light toning on one edge, as well as a very minor bend in the upper left corner. The problems are VERY minor in nature, and this is at least an EX+ cover. The vinyl is an ultra pristine NMINT+!!! Overall, this copy is NMINT-. $14.00. BONUS! THIS LP EXISTS ONLY ON A FAIRLY RARE 2009 CD, SO THIS COPY COMES WITH A TRANSCRIPTION CD OF ALL THE TRACKS RECORDED DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.
COPY #6. This copy is FACTORY SEALED. I can see a slight corner bend at bottom right through the shrink wrap. Otherwise, it's super. Let's call it FS, NMINT++. $16.00. BONUS! THIS LP EXISTS ONLY ON A FAIRLY RARE 2009 CD, SO THIS COPY COMES WITH A TRANSCRIPTION CD OF ALL THE TRACKS RECORDED DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.
COPY #7. The cover on this one shows just the very beginnings of some record ring wear. It's super minimal. This is a solid, NMINT cover. The vinyl is likewise NMINT. Overall, it's in NMINT condition, and it's yours for $14.00. BONUS! THIS LP EXISTS ONLY ON A FAIRLY RARE 2009 CD, SO THIS COPY COMES WITH A TRANSCRIPTION CD OF ALL THE TRACKS RECORDED DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.
COPY #8. The cover on this one is clean and nice. It's got the embossed promo inscription at upper right, and a couple of corner bends which are really only apparent on the rear cover. I'd rate this cover as EX+. The vinyl appears to be MINT, never-played! It's just pristine!!! Overall, this copy is NMINT-. It's yours for $12.00. BONUS! THIS LP EXISTS ONLY ON A FAIRLY RARE 2009 CD, SO THIS COPY COMES WITH A TRANSCRIPTION CD OF ALL THE TRACKS RECORDED DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.
COPY #9. The cover on this one has the embossed promo inscription at upper right. It's also got numerous brown water stains and several corner bends! Ouch. For a modern cover, this one is pretty bad. Let's call it GOOD+, at best! The vinyl is, however, unbelievably, ABSOLUTELY PRISTINE! It looks like it was maybe played once! It's NMINT+!!! So ... I won't even bother to try to rate this one overall. The cover stinks. The vinyl is superb. If you don't care about the cover, and just want to hear it, this is the copy for you. Just $6.00. BONUS! THIS LP EXISTS ONLY ON A FAIRLY RARE 2009 CD, SO THIS COPY COMES WITH A TRANSCRIPTION CD OF ALL THE TRACKS RECORDED DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.
COPY #10. This one is still factory sealed, but the upper right corner of the cover was clipped off -- a cut-out item. So, the disc is MINT, the cover would be MINT except for the corner clip. Let's call the cover EX. Overall, this copy is EX+ to NMINT-, and it's yours for $8.00. BONUS! THIS LP EXISTS ONLY ON A FAIRLY RARE 2009 CD, SO THIS COPY COMES WITH A TRANSCRIPTION CD OF ALL THE TRACKS RECORDED DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.
