Stars sign Lehtinen

Jere Lehtinen The Dallas Stars today agreed to terms on a three-year contract with free agent right wing Jere Lehtinen, who compiled 43 points for the team last season.

The 24-year-old Lehtinen recorded 16 goals and 27 assists in 63 contests in 1996-97, his second season in the league. He placed third in the voting for the Selke Trophy, awarded to the NHL's best defensive forward, and 13th for the Lady Byng Trophy, given to the most gentlemanly player.

Lehtinen, who was named Dallas' Rookie of the Year in 1995-96 after totaling six goals and 22 assists, is looking to play for the Finnish Olympic Team for the second time in 1998. He also led Finland to the gold medal in the 1995 World Championships and played in the 1996 World Cup of Hockey.
