Honoured Jersey Numbers Beginning in the 1993/94 season, the Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club began an annual practice in which two former Maple Leaf greats were honoured. The Maple Leafs intend to continue recognizing individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the organization. The jersey numbers of these individuals are placed in blue on a white banner and raised to the Gardens' rafters. During the season in which the players are honoured, current Leafs who are wearing the number(s) being honoured will wear special commemorative Leaf shoulder patches which have the honoured players' names embroidered on them. These shoulder patches are created for the sole use of the game jersey for that player and are not available to the general public. The following Leaf personnel have had their jersey number honoured by the Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club: 1993/94 Season 1994/95 Season 1995/96 Season #10 Syl Apps #1 Walter "Turk" Broda #7 Francis "King" Clancy #9 Ted "Teeder" Kennedy #1 Johnny Bower #7 Tim Horton Retired Jersey Numbers In a pre-game ceremony before the game on October 17, 1992, the retired sweater numbers of Bill Barliko and Irvine 'Ace' Bailey were formally recognized. Former Maple Leafs Ron Ellis and Ted 'Teeder' Kennedy assisted Ann Barilko-Klisanich (sister of Bill Barilko) and Joyce Bailey (daughter of 'Ace' Bailey) in raising the blue banners with white numbers of the only two retired numbers in franchise history. The Toronto Maple Leafs have developed a number retirement policy in which a player will have his number considered for retirement if he has had a significant contribution to the Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club and has experienced a career ending incident while a member of the Maple Leaf team. This unique policy was inspired by the unfortunate story behind 'Ace' Bailey. #6 Irvine 'Ace' Bailey #5 'Bashin'' Bill Barilko
