Men's 10km
Bjorn Daehlie of Norway won the 10km event with a time of 27 minutes, 24.5 seconds. Daehlie led right from the start to the finish. He became the first man to win six Winter Olympics gold medals with this victory. Austrian Markus Gandler won the silver medal with a time of 27 minutes, 32.5 seconds. Mika Myllylae of Finland was third. Vladimir Smirnov and Thomas Alsgaard were in the hunt but placed fourth and fifth in this classical event. Philip Boit was the first ever Kenyan to compete in the Winter Olympics. He finished in last place, 20 minutes behind Daehlie. When Boit crossed the finish line, Daehlie was the first to congratulate him. Alsgaard and Daehlie skied together until at the finish when Alsgaard won the sprint. Daehlie was second and 1.1 seconds behind. Kazakhstan's Vladimir Smirnov won the bronze. He finished with a time of 1 hour, 7 minutes, 31.5 seconds. Italian Silvio Fauner took the bronze in the classical-style event. There was heavy snow during the race and 30cm of snow the night before. Favourite Bjorn Daehlie clearly didn't have the right wax and finished in 20th place. Men's 50km Bjorn Daehlie won his eighth Olympic gold medal with his victory in the grueling freestyle 50km event. He finished in 2 hours, 5 minutes, 8.2 seconds. Daehlie took the lead with just eight kilometres to go and held on to win. Sweden's Niklas Jonsson won the silver. He was beside Daehlie for a long time almost overtook him in the end. Jonsson finished in 2 hours, 5 minutes, 8.2 seconds. Christian Hoffman of Austria was third after leading the race at the beginning. The Italian team won the silver with a time of 1 hour, 40 minutes, 55.9 seconds. Norway's Alsgaard narrowly beat Silvio Fauner of Italy in a sprint to the finish line. The Finnish team lead by Mika Myllylae won the bronze. Russia's Nina Gavryliouk led the opening leg but Norway's Marit Mikkelsplass overtook Russian Olga Danilova in the second leg. Elena Vaelbe, the Russian who retired after the Olympics, pulled away with a great 23 second lead and Larissa Lazutina finished it off.
