Men's Aerials
Eric Bergoust of the United States won the men's aerials. He had the top jump in the first round and was good enough in the second for a combined score of 255.64 points. France's Sebastien Foucras won the silver. He finished with 248.79 points, almost seven back of Bergoust. Dmitri Dashchinsky won the bronze. Nicolas Fontaine, Jeff Bean, and Andy Capicik all qualified for the final 12. However, all tried difficult jumps and didn't have clean landings. Fontaine finished 10th followed by Bean, and lastly Capicik in 12th place. David Belhumeur was not in the competition because he fell badly during practice. Men's Moguls Jonny Moseley of the United States won the gold in men's moguls. He was the favourite and skied solidly. Moseley finished with 26.93 points. The silver and bronze went to Janne Lahtela and Sami Mustonen, both of Finland. The young Finns scored 26.00 and 25.76 to beat out the defending champion, Jean-Luc Brassard of Canada. He was good but not spectacular. Brassard said he regrets having carried the Canadian flag in the opening ceremony because of the curse of the flag-bearer. Ryan Johnson was seventh and Stephane Rochon finished a disappointing eighth place. Women's Aerials Nikki Stone of the United States won the gold medal. She scored 98.15 on her first jump and 94.85 on the second for a total of 193.00 points. Nannan Xu of China won the silver with 186.97 points. Her last jump scored 99.40 points but it wasn't enough. Swiss Colette Brand claimed third place with a score of 171.83. Women's Moguls Japan's Tae Satoya was a surprising winner of the women's moguls. She was 11th after the preliminaries but scored 25.06 points in her great final run. Tatjana Mittermayer of Germany won the silver with 24.62 points. Norway's Kari Traa was third with 24.09 points. She led after the preliminaries and her final run looked good enough at the very least a bronze. However, the judges gave Pelchat 23.95 points to put her out of the medals and in tears. Tami Bradley was the other Canadian in the final.
