Men's
The Czech Republic team won the men's hockey gold medal. They won 1-0 in the gold medal game against Russia. Petr Svoboda scored the winning goal in 8:08 of the third period. Dominik Hasek was great in shutting out the speedy Russians. Finland won the bronze medal by upsetting the Canadians 3-2. In the qualifying round, Belarus and Kazakhstan advanced from the B pool into the Championship round robin. Russia and Canada both won their groups. In the quarter-finals, the Czech Republic shocked the USA and Finland upset Sweden. Russia and Canada advanced easily. In the semi-finals, Russia beat Finland and the Czechs won in a shootout against Canada. After the United States were knocked out, some members trashed two hotel rooms. Chairs were broken and fire extinguishers were fired. One fire extinguisher was thrown from the fifth floor. Superstar Paul Kariya was not in the tournament due to a concussion and star Joe Sakic was injured for most of the tournament. Star Mark Messier was left off the team. Captain Eric Lindros' team won games against Belarus, USA, and Sweden in the round robin. In the crossover elimination round, Canada defeated Kazakhstan 4-1 to advance to the semi-finals. In the semi-final against the Czech Republic team, Canada was the favourite going in. There was no score in the first and second periods. Czech Republic defenceman Jiri Slegr scored at 9:46 of the third period and the Canadians were down 1-0. Trevor Linden tied the score by beating the NHL MVP Dominik Hasek, the Czech goaltender, with a high shot with only 1:03 left in the game. In overtime, Canada outshot the Czechs 5-1 but Hasek stoned them. The game was going to be decided with the dreaded shootout. Robert Reichel was up first for the Czechs and scored on Canadian netminder Patrick Roy with a low shot. Canadians Theo Fleury, Ray Bourque, Joe Niewendyk, Eric Lindros all failed to beat Hasek. The last Canadian, Brendan Shanahan had to score to force a sudden-death shootout. Hasek stopped that one too. The Czech Republic defeated Canada 2-1. There was a lot of second-guessing after the game. Many wondered why head coach Marc Crawford did not choose the all-time leading goal scorer Wayne Gretzky, Steve Yzerman or Mark Recchi but instead chose defenceman Ray Bourque. The dejected Canadians went into the bronze medal game against Finland wanting to come home with a least a medal. The Finns were without tournament leading scorer Teemu Selanne. Jari Kurri and Jere Lehtinen scored for Finland while Rod Brind'Amour and Brendan Shanahan scored for Canada after two periods. Ville Peltonen scored the winning goal 17 seconds into the third period and the Finns won 3-2. Women's The United States won the gold medal in women's hockey. They defeated the Canadian team 3-1 in the gold medal game. Finland, led by tournament leading scorer Riikka Nieminen, won the bronze medal game 4-1 against China. In the round robin, the United States finished first with a 5-0 record. Canada was second, losing only to the USA. Finland was third and China grabbed the final medal round spot over Sweden. Japan finished last. However, Sarah Tueting, the U.S. goalie stopped all the shots the rest of the way. Sandra Whyte scored an empty net goal to seal the victory. In the round-robin, Canada defeated Japan, Sweden, China, and Finland before losing to the United States in the last meaningless game.
