02/21/98 Takafumi Nishitani of Japan wins gold in Men's 500m

Men's 500m

Takafumi Nishitani of Japan won the 500 metre race. He finished the final round with a time of 42.862 seconds. It was Japan's first ever Olympic short-track speed skating gold medal.

China's Yulong An finished second with a time of 43.022 seconds. Hitoshi Vematsu of Japan won the bronze. Marc Gagnon of Canada was the other finalist.

Canadians: Marc Gagnon finished fourth after a fall in the final round. His time was 1 minute, 15.605 seconds. Eric Bedard finished 10th and Francois Drolet was 16th.


Men's 1000m

Dong Sung Kim of South Korea won the gold in the men's 1000 metre event. He finished in 1 minute 32.375 seconds. China's Li Jiajun was just edged out at the finish line with a time of 1 minute, 32.428 seconds for silver.

Canadian Eric Bedard won the bronze with a time of 1 minute, 32.661 seconds. He beat out American Andrew Gabel. Kim was the 1997 World Champion.

Canadians: Eric Bedard surprisingly won the bronze medal. His best finish prior to the Olympics in this event was 14th. Bedard was lucky to advance to the finals after two skaters collided in the semi-finals.

World record holder and World Champion Marc Gagnon was disqualified in the quarter-finals for colliding with another skater to finish 16th. Francois Drolet was 11th.


Men's 5000m Relay

The Canadian team won the relay gold. They finished in 7 minutes, 06.075 seconds. The Canadians managed to avoid crashes by being ahead early.

Italy fell early and finished in 4th. A Chinese skater fell and took out a South Korean. The South Koreans overtook the Chinese to win the silver with a time of 7 minutes, 06.776 seconds.

Canadians: Marc Gagnon, Derrick Campbell, Eric Bedard, and Francois Drolet won the gold. They led for the majority of the race to defeat the South Koreans.


Women's 500m

Canadian Annie Perreault won the 500 metres with a time of 46.568 seconds. She led after Isabelle Charest of Canada brought down Chinese Wang Chunlu in the final round.

Yang Yang of China won the silver with a time of 46.627 seconds. South Korean Chun Lee-Kyung took the bronze for having the fastest time outside of the finals because both Charest and Chunlu were disqualified.

Canadians: Annie Perreault won the gold medal. She was in third place in the final when fellow Canadian Isabelle Charest tried to pass Chinese Wang Chunlu on the inside and both went down. Perreault took the lead and beat out Yang Yang of China to win. Charest placed 7th because of the disqualification. Tania Vincent finished 29th.


Women's 1000m

Chun Lee-Kyung of South Korea won the women's 1000 metres. She finished with a time of 1 minute, 42.77 seconds. She edged out Yang A. Yang of China at the finish line.

Yang A. Yang turned out to be disqualified for interfering with Chun at the finish. So Yang S. Yang of China took the silver with a time of 1 minute, 43.343 seconds. Won Hye-Kyung of South Korea won the bronze.

Canadians: Isabelle Charest finished 7th. Annie Perreault was 14th and Tania Vincent finished 23rd.


Women's 3000m Relay

The South Korean team won the relay gold. They finished in 4 minutes, 16.260 seconds. The South Koreans also broke the world record.

China was a close second. They finished in 4 minutes, 16.383 seconds. Canada and Japan both fell early in the race but Canada managed to hang on for bronze.
