Jasey-Jay Anderson was first after the first run but he fell on his second. He finished a very disappointing 16th. Favourite Mark Fawcett went out on his first run. His bindings and snowboard broke. Darren Chalmers was disqualified. Rebagliati had an excellent second run to leap over many snowboarders to claim the gold. The big news was after the competition. 17.8 nanograms of marijuana per millilitre was found in Rebagliati's bloodstream. FIS (The International Ski Federation) permits 15 nanograms per 15 millilitres. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) medical commission voted 13-12 to recommend action against Rebagliati to the executive board. The IOC executive board then voted 3-2 to strip Rebagliati of his gold medal. Two members did not vote. The Canadian Olympic Association decided to appeal. The COA claimed that Rebagliati's positive test was a result of second hand smoke in his going-away party on January 31, 1998 just before the Olympics in Whistler, BC. Rebagliati said that he hasn't smoked pot since April 1997. A little more than 24 hours later, an independent Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) overturned IOC's ruling. The IOC did not specify clearly that marijuana was a forbidden substance and only FIS did. Rebagliati then had a seven-hour interrogation by the Japanese police. He got back his gold medal. Men's Halfpipe Gian Simmen of Switzerland won the gold in men's halfpipe. His two-run combined total in the final round was 85.2 points. Norway's Daniel Franck finished second with 82.4 points. Ross Powers of the United States was a close third with 82.1 points.
