Men's 500m

Hiroyasu Shimizu of Japan won the gold. His combined time was 1 minute, 11.35 seconds. The time was a new Olympic record.

Canadian Jeremy Wotherspoon won the silver. He finished in 1 minute, 11.84 seconds. Kevin Overland of Canada won the bronze with a time of 1 minute, 11.86 seconds.

Canadians finished 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th in this event. Jeremy Wotherspoon of Red Deer won the silver with a great second run. Kevin Overland won the bronze. Sylvain Bouchard was fourth and Patrick Bouchard finished in fifth place.


Men's 1000m

Ids Postma of the Netherlands won the men's 1000 metre event. He finished in a time of 1 minute, 10.64 seconds. Postma's time was an Olympic record.

Jan Bos of the Netherlands won the silver with a time of 1 minute, 10.71 seconds. He was only seven hundredths of a second behind Postma. Japan's Hiroyasu Shimizu won the bronze with a time of 1 minute, 11 seconds. 18 skaters were each faster than the previous Olympic record due to the new clap skates.

Canadians: Sylvain Bouchard was fifth and only 29 tenths of a second from bronze. Jeremy Wotherspoon was sixth and Kevin Overland tied for ninth. All three were faster than the previous Olympic record. Patrick Bouchard finished in 19th spot.


Men's 1500m

Aadne Sondral of Norway won the 1500 metre gold. His time of 1 minute, 47.87 seconds was a new world record.

Ids Postma of the Netherlands won the silver. He was clearly ahead until he clipped a side marker on his final lap. Rintje Ritsma was on pace halfway through the race for gold but he couldn't keep up and wound up third.

Men's 5000m

Gianni Romme of the Netherlands won the gold medal. He blew everyone away with a time of 6 minutes, 22.20 seconds. This was a new world record.

Rintje Ritsma of the Netherlands was second. He broke Belgian Bart Veldkamp's new world record time of 6 minutes, 28.31 seconds. Veldkamp held the world record for 25 minutes but it was good enough for only bronze. Ritsma also held the world record with his time of 6 minutes, 28.24 seconds before Romme took it back.

Men's 10 000m

Gianni Romme of the Netherlands won the gold. His time of 13 minutes, 15.33 seconds broke the world record. Romme was more than ten seconds faster than the second place finisher.

Bob de Jong of the Netherlands won the silver with a time of 13 minutes, 25.76 seconds. Rintje Ritsma completed the Dutch sweep with a bronze medal.

Canadian Catriona LeMay-Doan won the gold. She set an Olympic record with her second round lap of 38.21 seconds. LeMay-Doan's combined time was 1 minute, 60.60 seconds.

Susan Auch of Canada won the silver. She finished in 1 minute, 16.93 seconds. Tomomi Okazaki of Japan won the bronze with a time of 1 minute, 17.10 seconds.

Susan Auch won the silver medal. She was second after the first run behind LeMay-Doan. Auch was also the silver medallist in this event last Olympics. Linda Johnson-Blair was 13th and Michelle Morton was 33rd.


Women's 1000m

Marianne Timmer of the Netherlands won the gold. She set an Olympic record with a time of 1 minute, 16.51 seconds.

The United States' Chris Witty was second with a time of 1 minute, 16.79 seconds. Canadian Catriona LeMay-Doan was third.

Women's 1500m

Marianne Timmer of the Netherlands surprisingly won this event. She also broke the world record with a time of 1 minute, 57.58 seconds. Timmer didn't finish once in the top three this World Cup season.

German Gunda Niemann-Stirnemann won the silver medal. She skated last and finished in 1 minute, 58.66 seconds. Chris Witty of the United States won the bronze.

German Gunda Niemann-Stirnemann won the gold. She set an Olympic record with a time of 4 minutes, 07.29 seconds.

Claudia Pechstein of Germany won silver with a time of 4 minutes, 08.47 seconds. Anna Friesinger completed the German sweep with the bronze.

Women's 5000m

Claudia Pechstein of Germany won the gold. She broke the world record and finished in 6 minutes, 59.61 seconds.

German Gunda Niemann-Stirnemann became the first woman to break the seven minute mark and held the world record for a few minutes with a time of 6 minutes, 59.65 seconds. However, Pechstein was four-hundredths of a second better.

Lyudmila Prokasheva of Kazakhstan won the bronze. Niemann-Stirnemann equaled the Winter Olympic record of eight individual medals with the silver.
