I really dislike the way Sai Baba devotees appear to sing to a picture. Are you worshipping this man?
Sathya Sai Baba ncourages the singing of bhajans (songs to the various names of God) because they purify the heart and mind. The actual form of devotional activity is not all that important, so long as the mind is rendered peaceful and joyful and directed towards God.
Traditional Indian teaching proceeds from the basic belief that Brahman (God) is formless, but since we need a focus for our devotion we have to approach God through on (or a few) of the names and forms of God sanctified by prophets, sages , seers and aposties. A Sai Baba devotee includes a picture of the Avatar Sathya Sai Baba; a Christian places a picture of Jesus on the altar.
However, Sai Baba advises that one should not get obsessed with names and forms. All religions have their own rituals, and onone is 'better' than any other. Sathya Sai Baba wants us to experience him, to listen to his message, and then put it into practice. You can express your prayers and hymns or bhajans towards any form of God. The Only requirement is that thye be sung orrecited with devotion, from the heart. Sathya Sai Baba promises that then God will surely respond.
