In 1989, Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini put a price on Salman Rushdie's head. Rushdie, he declared, had blasphemed the Prophet Mohammed by showing him, among other things, consorting with prostitutes in his novel "The Satanic Verses." Therefore, he said, Rushdie had to die. The Ayatollah's edict, called a fatwa, raised a great protest in the West, although there was also some sour, if hidden, amusement. Rushdie, a British citizen, often had denounced the West as the source of all evil, and he had been especially harsh in his denunciations of the government of Margaret Thatcher. But in the wake of the fatwa he turned to that government for protection, and, of course, he received it; hence the sour amusement. Rushdie has lived more or less in hiding since then, still protected by British security. Presumably it is a miserable life.
He probably enjoyed the world-wide attention he received eight years ago, but people who have seen him recently say he looks haunted. He turns up occasionally at writers' conferences or in government offices to ask for help in overturning the fatwa, and receives expressions of sympathy, but the fatwa still stands, and his plight now may even be worse. An Iranian "foundation" recently raised the bounty on him to $2.5 million.
