Benito Mussolini was born on July 29, 1883 outside the village of Predappio in the Northeastern Italian Province of Forli. His mother, Rosa Malteni was one of the most respected schoolteachers around. His father, Allesandro Mussolini was both a blacksmith and a committed socialist. Benito Mussolini had one brother and one sister, Armaldo and Edvige. Neither of the children ever got along.
Mussolini was brought up in one of the poorest regions in all of Italy. During his school years, he always kept to himself. He never cried and rarely laughed. He didn't talk much. He preferred sitting in the back of the class reading rather than playing with others. He was always fighting in class and was expelled from his first boarding school. Mussolini was surrounded by the influence of anarchism, socialism, and other political philosophies. Both Benito Mussolini and his father had a violent temper. In 1902, Mussolini taught elementary school for a few months. He then started his political career as a radical socialist.
At the beginning of WWI, Mussolini was against the war. Two months after the war began, he was in favor of Italy entering the conflict and was therefore expelled from the Socialist Party. In May 1915, Italy entered the war. Mussolini was drafted into the army in September of 1915. In WWI, he fought in the trenches on the Italian-Austrian front. Soon after his draft, he was injured and discharged when the grenade launcher he was operating overheated and blew up.
Mussolini declared war on socialism and started the Fascist Party. In April of 1919, the fascists attacked a socialist rally in Milan. Mussolini and over a hundred other men were thrown in jail for possession of illegal arms. All of the men were released the next day. Soon the army and police did not interfere with fascist violence. Police officials were replaced with fascist members. A fascist militia was made. It consisted of goon squads, assassination teams, and secret police.
Mussolini became prime minister of Italy in 1922. He restored old statues and built new ones. Benito Mussolini and Adolph Hitler greatly admired each others' power. Hitler first met with Mussolini in Venice on June 1934. Hitler's Nazi party was copied from the Fascist party of Benito Mussolini. Both parties were violently anti-democratic and anti-Communist. In 1939, Mussolini invaded Albania without permission of the Grand Council. He was thrown out of power and went into hiding from one place to another. Hitler brought Benito Mussolini to Germany to hide. After a while, Mussolini went back to northern Italy. On April 28, 1945, Mussolini was executed by gunfire. The next day, his body along with other fascists were taken to Milan and hung upside down in a public square.
