Sounded to me like they described your typical $1/ft Monster cable 12ga speaker wire when they wrote the review in TAB! Nothing harsh, yet nothing special either.
I've tinkered with Home Depot Sprinker wire and Thermostat wire in the past. I find nothing wrong with tinkering. And you can find some descent matches with some systems. YEt, I've yet to hear better than some of the better high end offerings, that are doing the trial and error for you at different price points! Still, it's all good...and cool to think there's some magic trick "cheapo" wire out there that's "undiscovered!". Yet, I've not found better generic offerings for either power cords, speaker wire or IC's than what the higher end people manufacture

I have no doubt the Home Depot cables performed as well as "high end" cables. Why shouldn't they?

In fact they did meet all my "high end" expectations.... on my Dewalt miter saw!

I pretty much agree with Tireguy. There are many "low cost" speaker cables out there that should trounce the HD PC's. Examples would be AudioQuest Type 4+ and others; Kimber 4TC and/or 8TC; DH Labs Q10 and/or T14; Goertz M1 or M2; and these are only some of the better known ones.

I have made the Jon Risch CC89259's, including the quad version, and I thought they sounded quite good actually, and even better than some of the above-mentioned cables. However, they use a special geometry, good (but nothing special) copper, and teflon dieletric. They have quite low inductance (good for speaker cables) and relatively low capacitance (also good, but not quite as important and inductance). They offer a good balance of tonal qualities that should work for most moderate systems. They are dirt cheap to make, and if someone wants them but is not good with diy, they can be ordered from several internet vendors. I would have been interested to have seen them in the TAS cable shootout.

Finally, I also agree that higher end cables (used in an appropriately matching system) really can make a significant sonic improvement. I have heard distinct differences in every speaker cable switch I have made.

In my system , in general, Radio Shack 12 gauge wire sounds on a par with higher priced cables, but only for rock n roll. On Jazz or more diverse recordings The higher priced cables kill The Rat Shacks.

Thanks Tireguy. The Home Depot craze reminds me of the Toshiba $60 DVD craze in the Digital Asylum. Everyone wants to be the new Sam Tellig, finding that Radio Shack Optimus 3400. The steal of the century. They come and go.

Cheers,
John

Appreciate all the input, and apologize for not providing a link...just didn't think of it. I'd tend to agree with all said above 100%, if not for Cable Asylum poster "Dave Pogue." (Sorry to single you out, Dave, but it's for all the best reasons.) Look up Dave's system (he has pics) and read of his experience. He's replaced older Omega Mikro cables with this Home Depot stuff! Hard for me to believe he "doesn't know" what he's hearing...enough so that I'll be giving the HD stuff a try shortly. I'm very cautious about believing, yet don't wish to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Totally agree, the Home Depot wire is "the Valhalla Killer" we've all been waiting for. Tried some (with bananas) with my morning cereal and made me absolutely high...not to mention what it did for my (be)low.

Also highly recomended is their .55¢ electrical outlets. I'm telling you, the lamps in the house have never looked brighter, especially when turned on in a "totally black" room.

(Disclaimer: I own Home Depot stock...please keep buying. I am cryoing all the way to the bank. Thanks.)

Very clever!

Actually, this thread is part of a sociological study into... nah, only kidding.

These reponses are all very funny, but why should the Home Depot cables underperform the "high end" cables? Because they cost less? Because it would be absurd to pay so much more for high end cables if they didn't outperform less expensive cables and it is impossible for audiophiles to engage in absurd behavior? I went to one audiophile site that recommended taking pictures of your system, putting the pictures in zip-lock bags, marking the bags with a felt tipped pen and putting the bags in the freezer -- and this
would make your system sound better. In fact, the guy claimed that, as long as the pictures were in his freezer, his system sounded better, but when he took the pictures out -- all his friends commented, unprovoked, that his system didn't sound as good as before.

Why bother? Apparently, the $350 JPS power cord is a re-wrapped $15 unit available from Europe. Man, would I be *pissed* if I had been taken in by those charlatans...

Rsbeck, its obvious the pictures were volatilizing gasses that were permeating the adjacent plastic baggies holding the dope that the guy kept in the freezer. During the ensuing double blind testing and bong fest, his friends determined (after hours of serious contemplation, and munchie sessions) that the pictures did indeed contribute to a more holographic image of the music. Seems logical.

Rsbeck, I do sincerely applaud the Home Depot wire and hope it "does" equal or outperform more expensive ones. (My disclaimer is absolutely true, by the way.)

Am I running out to buy it, no. At the moment my speaker wires (ELF Reference) are giving me a great deal of joy. They bested (for my ears) wire that I had previously which was 4-5Xs more expensive. So I am a big fan of quality-for-a-good-price wherever I can find it..

I guess my levity was directed more at the hysteria that tends to sweep through the audio community about once or twice a month regarding new products. (And, the terminology to describe the sonic benefits of "Product X" has gotten more outrageous and dumbfounding, but that's a subject for another thread.)

OK, HERE'S WHAT WE NEED TO DO!!!...
...We need to have a contest for who can build the most ambitious "Home Depot parts only home theater system contest!"
Heck, you could either buy or build the following either at HD or using parts available at Home Depot exclusively!.
You can cover foundational, acoustical, even screen, etc. You could also, it seems "build your own HD turn table, use their outdoor or inwall speakers, make your own power calbles, interconnects, speaker wire, bass traps, custome chairs, extensive acoustical treatments, motorized drop-downs, lifts, curtains. You can also use their sconces, build platforms, rope lighting for floor/isles, antena's, use their DVD/VCR/TV combo's,SAtalite sytems, closed circuit video, surge protectors, and more!
Heck, all you need to do to finish the job is to pick up an amp or two, maybe a video projector, and you're done!
Not bad. I figure you should be able to build/buy everything you need within about 95% completion by simply Depot shoping it all out!
Come on!...what do you all say?

Just wanted to fan the flames, since I'm the guy who called these things "stunning" on AA. They're the real thing, but you have to actually try them, preferably with an open mind. As noted, they replaced older Omega Mikro (circa $800) cables in my system, but all my friends who have tried them have had tube-based systems, so I have no idea how they perform with SS gear.

Feel free to knock 'em all you like, but try them first. Okay?

Oh, and I'm going to have a pair cryoed to see what happens. They do seem to benefit from burn-in and from the use of Pro-Gold and Walker SST.

Dopogue, fan-away and please keep us informed of the cryo treatment's effect if you have the time.

Best regards.
