Kaguya-hime no koibito

The Lover of Princess Kaguya

In the Sailormoon Manga series, Naoko Takeuchi wrote/drew a comic which the Sailormoon S movie was based on. Below I have put some of the diffrences between the manga version and the movie version. Keep in mind that this is for people who have seen the S movie. If you haven't seen it then go ahead and read a summary of it first and then come back here.

  • Kakeru is much sicker
  • Diana is in it
  • The crystal is not something the queen needs, but is in fact her. After Kakeru got it, it began to grow until it took a human form and turned into Princess Snow Kaguya.
  • The queen said she was supposed to dominate the solar system,, but the solar system expelled her because it said she was a heritic.
  • The queen seems to be in love with Kakeru and vice-versa
  • Luna was supposed to be going to Artemis's but decided to take a walk down the street which is where Kakeru saved her.
  • Some kids put bandages over Luna's cresent.
  • Kakeru travels to America to see Himeko take off and Luna sits on the wing of the plane.
  • There's a scene where young Kakeru and young Himeko are talking about becoming astronaughts and discovering if Princess Kaguya really lives on the moon.
  • There's a meteor flying towards Earth which was going to collide with it.
  • Himeko's original mission was to go to the moon, but then it changed to blowing up the meteor
  • Kakeru is in the hospital a lot and is almost about to die.
  • There's a much deeper relationship between Himeko and Kakeru
  • Kakeru brings Luna to the space center.
  • Luna talks to Himeko.

NOTES

In the manga, Luna, as well as Artemis and Diana turn into humans which I really think is great. Another intresting thing is that there is an Asian myth about Princess Kaguya. Basically what it's about is a kind woodcutter who went out to do his work and finds a tiny little baby in a bamboo stem and takes her home with him. The baby was really the moon princess who accidently fell to Earth. Although she was very small, in only three months she grew to her full height and many suiters wanted her but the day came when she had to return to the moon. Japanese children know this story as "Kaguya-hime" although when it was originally told (the story came about around 900 AD), it was called "Taketori-monogatari", the tale of the bamboo cutter. Sounds a bit diffrent from the manga or movie, ne!
