The GENERAL CONTEXT of such use is:
The term refers to Jerome, who, in his writings and Works, does no more than "report" what "is" - what does exist, and what does constitute "reality", both on the human scale and on the Cosmological scale, as an artist does merely "paint" that which is there, and a sculptor does "sculpt" that which the stone does already hold, in the sculptor's "reality"
Which reminds me of the ancient "road-post statues" of Chile and Peru, which I studied about many years ago, that exist on the high-deserts of those countries. The ancient sculptors of those roadway markers were most adept in their sculpting (probably "seeing" more than the corporeality of their subjects, with their probably mature minds), such that, if one (in this case, however, "one" being a person of immature mind) looked at a statue of an old man, all one could see was a statue of an old man. However, if a photograph was taken of that statue of an old man, the resulting print would yet show a photo of an old man. BUT, lo and behold, IF one were to look at the NEGATIVE of the photo, one could definitely see, superimposed upon that statue of the old man, the "sculpted" image of that old man AS A YOUNG MAN, resplendent in all his young manhood. Such is an example of a mature mind (in this case, the sculptor) "perceiving" that which is (or has been) surely there, in reality.
I am also reminded of reading about, somewhere in my readings of years past, all of the ancient "road markers" of the American continent, similar to that described above of Chile and Peru, which, unrecognized for what they were, met a more disasterous fate. In many cases, these ancient "road-signs" were merely "piles of rock", to the immature minds of the modern world who saw, not the "signs" or "markings" which these "rock-piles" held, but merely the rock-rubble that they, with their immature minds, saw. Consequently, almost all of these ancient, and eminently historic, "road-markers", do now exist at various other locations than where they did originally stand, such new "locations" being as the paving-rocks of our modern highways.
