The GENERAL CONTEXT of such use is:
worldly compromise:
Those compromises in ethics, economics, education, the social order and just about anything, that are arrived at between two or more societal powers, in their extant relationships with each other, that (such compromises) should not disturb the 'status quo' of such relationships, and yet shall allow the further progress of some issue or matter, ostensibly to the benefit of all of humanity, but usually, in reality, guaranteeing further enrichment of the 'powers that be' who shall devise such a 'worldly compromise' in the first place. However, if the 'powers that be' cannot be guaranteed the 'larding of their own pockets', i.e. their 'vested interests', inevitably the 'physicalness' of the soldier-warrior may be called into play, as the solution of last resort, when the 'players' (the rich individuals, groups, classes and/or nations) cannot 'get their cards right' in such 'high-stakes' games-of-fortune.
