Two seasons of Kyatto Ninden Teyande episodes were made by Sotsu Agency, with the animation studio, Tatsunoko Productions. The first episode aired on Febuary 1st, 1990, and the series continued into 1991. A total of 54 episodes were made.
In 1991, Saban leased the rights to use the animation, and 52 episodes of Samurai Pizza Cats were made in English. The English episodes are not translations of the Japanese episodes, nor were they ever supposed be the same as the original show. New stories were written by a team of talented writers to match the animation. Most anime fans would be appalled at the idea of a show being changed so much, and normally, they'd be right to feel that way. But for Samurai Pizza Cats, it works. The new stories were hilarious, with well written humour that people of all ages could enjoy, and the writers even took the time to match the dialoge to the movements of the characters mouths. Samurai Pizza Cats stories aren't the same as those from Kyatto Ninden Teyande, but they do keep to the fun spirit of the original.
