Before we go on I am going to define the term "sociology" for you: (ahem)
Sociology: The systematic study of human society and social interactions (straight from the book).
OK, having said that, here's the dilemma. There is this lady who sits behind me in Sociology class. She seems very nice, pleasant, friendly, late middle ages or so. Anyhow, we start talking about the criminal code as it applies to ethics, where we draw the line on sexual fetishes, prostitution, and the like. So, like a few people in the class who had questions regarding said topic, she positioned her hand in the up motion, like she was to say something (a ceremonial gesture which has stood the test of time from students and instructors alike). Thinking this was going to be a relevent question/comment, I listened attentively, to: "well, the way i see it, porn isn't even an aspect it's just degradation of women and is putting us back and these men who have been persecuting us for decades and who need to fear god and...........yada yada yada"
Well, that was a little innapropriate, I first thought. For the study of this subject is exactly that. Not a belief. Not a value we hold dear. Not a porfound trust heaved outword to anyone who would listen with a disregard for how off the subject (or course) it was. A study. I could understand it if it were an Ethics class. I could understand it if t were a philosophy class.....not Sociology.
I know what your thinking, Your thinking "but Scott, she did it once, it sucked, get over it" right? BUT NO, IT didn't stop there! no, no, no, no, just one I could handle! It's like she has this clear mission now to hammer into our incoherent skulls how life "should" be lived. It's getting to be so bad that I see other people slumping over when they see her hand raised, knowing that they can rest from note taking for a good 20 munutes while she get out her ideologies about how parents should go back to spanking her children or whatever. If you think Im being hard on her, I was listening to a few other people talk about it in the lineup at the foodcourt. They were pretty harsh, but I understand where they are coming from. This is a 3 week class that covers a 400 page textbook. Lecture time is essencial to grasping the overwhelming amouunt of information we have to absorb in that little amount of time, and this time is severely strained with her yapping, yapping, yapping, every half an hour over any conrovercial point that has been brought up as a case study, etc. I won't even devulge into her inspred and obviously well thought out conclusions dealing with 1st Nations people living on reserves............
Enduring Her prolific time wasting for the past few weeks, I have come to a few conclusions about her rants. Mostly all have to do with society today, and that we need to get back to good wholesome, traditional morality. Her "opinions" always comes back to:
1) God
2) Family (or the lack thereof)
3) Damn kids on that "pot" she's been hearing so much about lately (hehe)
The term "The way I see it" has in my mind now become the harbringer of a fate worse then death, with the ceremonial hand raising being the symbolic air raid siren signifying impending doom......Furthermore, I find it especially fasinating that she started this blatant editorializing the very same day that we learned about Max Weber's verstehen philosophy (the belief that the study of Sociology must be bias and value free)
Why do we even BOTHER to call it the social sciences, then?? Why not the "sociobeliefs"? How bout the "Sociofamilyvalues?"
"SocioRightWingMoralist arts" has a nice ring to it!
I pray to god I have a history class with this woman come September. I want so bad to see a paper boldly proclaiming that the fall of the former Soviet Union happened because the way she saw it their Young Offender's act was too leanient on kids or that their education didn't start at the home, and that they didn't have enough money for public schools, and that they did not have God fearing Politicians that would expell the Homosexuals and the blastphemers to their own island (or whatever borderline archaic belief system she has in place) I bet I'm not too far off...........
And do you kids want to know the kicker?
It's that I just realized now that I have given my Socio instructor my web page URL!!! I didn't so much "give" it too her, but I have it as my signature on my email, and I did send her one when I had a question......hahahah But I mean Really, an instructor not in the field of computers checking a student web page? I think that's a little too personal by today's educational standards. Well anyhow, Im not going to let this work go to waste!
(Edyta if your here sign the guestbook
to re-affirm my fate...........and Kyra says hi!!!) : )
