Hair Clip Organizer
You will need:
- two cup hooks (the kind with the 'clasp' on them)
- 3/8"-1/2" dowel (36" long)
- something to cut the dowel with
- sandpaper
- 1 yard of heavyweight clear vinyl (or try one of the new colored clear vinyls!)
- A straight edge or yardstick
- utility scissors
- 1 package double fold bias tape
- 1 package single fold bias tape
- thread to match
- some kind of removable marker that writes on vinyl (soap works!)
Directions
- We live in an older house so our closet doors open outward toward you. I hung this inside the closet door, but you could hang it almost anywhere.
- Measure desired placement area and attach two cup hooks about 24"-32" apart. (adjust this measurement to suit your needs)
- Slide the dowel into the two cup hooks to see how long it needs to be, then mark it and cut it off, leaving at least 1" past the cup hooks on each end.
- Sand the cut end of the dowel or scrape it on cement until it is smooth. If you want to get real fancy, paint it!
- Using the width of the door and the length of the dowel as a guide, cut the width of the vinyl, leaving the length at about 40"-45".
- From excess vinyl, cut a 4"-5" wide strip for pockets. (To make flat pockets, cut the strip the same width as the background vinyl, to make dimensional pockets, cut the strip about 1 1/2 times wider than the background width.)
- Divide the pocket strip into 2 or 3 sections, and mark the division lines. Divide the background vinyl into the same 2 or 3 sections and mark the background.
- Apply double fold bias tape to the top edge of the pocket strip.
- Attach the vinyl pocket strip to the background vinyl at the sides with zig-zag,(straight stitching tends to tear the vinyl more easily) starting 4" down from the top cut edge.
- For flat pockets, match up the lines on the background and the pocket piece and sew the division lines to make pockets. Sew across the bottom of the pocket strip to attach it to the background.
- For dimensional pockets, match up the lines on the background and the pocket piece and sew the division lines in. You will have excess in each section. Sew across the bottom of the pocket, making 2 small pleats in each pocket to take up the excess.
- Optional: use single fold bias tape to cover all division seams in pockets.
- Apply single fold bias tape across the bottom of the pocket strip to cover the stitching lines using two rows of zig-zag, at the top and bottom edges of the bias tape.
- Starting at the bottom of the pocket on one side, apply double fold bias tape up to the top, across the top of the background vinyl and down the other side to the bottom of the pocket on the other side, using a zig-zag stitch. (Fold edges of the bias in at the ends, and miter at the corners)
- Fold the top edge down on the outside about 1 1/2", stitch using zig-zag, catching the outside edge of the bias tape to make a casing for the dowel.
- Measure, divide, and mark the remaining vinyl (below the pockets) into equal width strips to the bottom of the background vinyl. Between each 2"-3" wide strip, mark a narrower strip, maybe 1/2" -1" wide. (The wider strips will depend on how wide your narrowest barrette clips are. 2"-3" strips usually work well.) You may vary the widths for different clips.
- Cut on marked lines so you have many strips of vinyl hanging down. Cut off and remove the narrower strips so there is space between each wider strip.
- Slide dowel into the casing, slide ends of dowel into the cup hooks.
- Clip barettes to the strips, use pockets for scrunchies, ponytail holders, etc.
Variation: Make two or three rows of pockets--remember to lengthen original background vinyl piece to allow more room.
