CAMARINES SUR CELEBRATES 419th ANNIVERSARY

Bikol Daily. Camarines Sur, the premier province in Bicol, for the first time marked its foundation day after 419 years.
According to Professor Danilo Gerona, local historian who was commissioned to research on the province’s exact foundation date, then Governor General Sande decreed on May 27, 1579 the establishment of Camarines where Spanish subjects were encouraged to settle.
In April this year, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of the Camarines Sur approved a resolution officially marking the province’s founding date based on Gerona’s research.
In the first celebration that marked the official foundation of the province, a project dubbed as Foundation Trail will be launched to raise awareness of the province’s historical roots.
The project will trace the route of the Spanish colonizers from their entry in Libon, Albay sometime in the year 1574 until they finally established the province of Camarines.
The 419th foundation day was simultaneously celebrated with the Centennial Flag Day on May 28, 1998, a day earlier than the scheduled date all the Philippines.
A parade that featured four major floats, depicting significant events of the revolution, and 100 flags bearers carrying the emblems of the 1896 revolution was among the highlights of the first anniversary celebration. Juan Escandor, Jr.
