PENAFRANCIA FESTIVAL ’98 BACK ON TRACKSan Diego, CA. Despite a three-month hiatus, the Pag-Iribang Bikolnon Steering Committee is back on track and going full-speed in the implementation of this year’s Penafrancia celebration. Earlier hampered by a proposal to change the date of the celebration to coincide with the Labor Day weekend in September, the Steering Committee came to a consensus to table the issue for future consideration.
Under the chairmanship of Mr. Uldarico Penaranda, the current President of the Nabuenos of Southern California, Pag-Iribang Bikolnon has laid out it’s plans for this year’s celebration. The traditional novenario will begin on Friday, August 21 at the Airmen’s Chapel of the Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar of this city. Novenas will start at 6:30 p.m. followed by a Marian Mass at 7:30 p.m.
With $3,346.90 currently in its coffers, Pag-Iribang Bikolnon has drawn-up a working budget for physical arrangement (stage set-up, generator rental, dumpster rental, etc.), sports activities, land & fluvial procession, site competition and publication of a souvenir program amounting to $6,946 with an anticipated revenue of $5,476. Due to the small projected revolving fund for the celebration next year (less than $2,000), the members of the Steering Committee agreed to undertake a supplemental fundraising effort in the form of a free drawing which will be held at Lake O’Neill on the day of the festival. An additional revenue of at least $2,500 is anticipated from the fundraiser.
For its part, TIASCA will be responsible for drawing-up plans for the land & fluvial procession (including Andas & Pagoda decoration).
