Celso T. Amo, Bikol Daily

Legaspi City. The Department of Health (DOH) noted a drop in the total number of persons with sexually transmitted disease (STD) in four provinces of the Bicol Region.

Dr. Ferchito Avelino, DOH program coordinator for the control of HIV and STD, indicated a drop of 4.97% from 2,781 cases from January to September last year (quarterly average of 927) to just 559 cases from January to march this year.

Avelino bared among the Bicol provinces which submitted their reports, Albay topped the number of cases with 364 followed by Camarines Sur – 102, Camarines Norte – 89, and Catanduanes – 4. A total of 1,819 cases in Albay was reported last year, Camarines Sur – 553, Camarines Norte – 369, and Masbate – 3.

"We owe this to the integration of STD-HIV services to the Family Planning and Maternal Health services in the health centers," said Avelino.
