Professional experiences:
- 10 years as deck-officer (stuurman, mate, steuermann) and captain in the
merchant marine: yachts, freighters, oil-tankers, passenger ships and
ocean-going tugboats.
Ships I served (and worked on) were:
- 33 years in Information Technology, of which
- 8 years as programmer (scientific and engineering applications)
- 5 years as researcher in such areas as computer languages,
compilers, operational research techniques, computer aided
technologies, and mathematical applications; the biggest achievements were
the specification and realization of a system with which the shapes of
the glass of TV-tubes could be designed and manufactured
automatically, and the involvement in the use of the AED Software Engineering tools; its implementation; the development of a graphical interface to the AED language and the technical cooperation with the MIT development staff of D.T. Ross.
- 8 years as Philips' concern coordinator for CAD in electronics
- 5 years as manager of the head-department comprising of CAD,
standards, technical documentation, and the modelshop in Philips
Telecommunication Industry.
- 7 years as information technology director responsible for CAD/CAM, and strategic & architectural IT-issues in AT&T Network
Systems Nederland BV.
- Founded and chaired the Working Group 5.2 on Computer Aided
Design of IFIP (the International Federation for Information
Processing) (1972-1975).
- Chaired IFIP-TC-5 (IFIP's Technical Committee on Applications in
Technology) (1977-1983)
- Member of the Program Committees of IFIP's World Congresses
in Toronto (1977) and Dublin (1986).
- Founded the technical journal "Computers in Industry" (1979).
- Founded the series of international CAPE conferences (CAPE = Computer Applications in Product(ion) Engineering) in Amsterdam (1983), Copenhagen
(1986), Tokyo (1989), Bordeaux (1991), Beiing (1994),and Detroit
(planned for 1997 but unfortunately cancelled since it collided
with AUTOFACT'97).
- Consultant to the Management of Computervision (1979 - 1984).
- Consultant to I3P (1984 - 1987).
- Secretary of Working Group 2 of IEC Technical Committee 3B
(1981 - 1985).
- Member of the Board of Directors of CIAD, a Dutch Association
of Computer Users (1983 - 1987).
- Appointed in 1984 to the rank of "Hoofdingenieur" (Chief development engineer) in Philips Telecommunication Industry.
