Ohio, Kentucky & West Virginia

July 26 - August 2, 2011

We Flew to Indianapolis, Indiana with a stop in Phoenix, Arizona and picked up our rental car. After an overnight in Huber Heights, Ohio we stopped in Xenia, Ohio and found the Old Sailors and Soldiers Home where Kathy's grandmother grew up when it was an orphanage. In Springfield, Ohio we took a tour of the restored Wescott House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

In Columbus, Ohio, we saw: Ohio Statehouse (tour), 40th floor of Rhodes State Office Tower, Art Deco LeVeque Tower, Replica of the Santa Maria ship, James Thurber House, Ohio State Stadium, Franklin Park Conservatory, Columbus Museum of Art, and dinner at Schmidt’s Restaurant in German Village (featured on “Man vs. Food”).

We stayed two nights in the Grace Manor Bed & Breakfast in Newport, Kentucky, just across the river from Cincinnati, Ohio.

In Cincinnati, we saw: Giants-Reds game (Giants lost 4-3 in 14 innings), fireworks after the game, Boulter House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, 49th floor observation deck of the Art Deco Carew Tower, Union Terminal, Western Hills Viaduct, Cincinnati Art Museum and William Howard Taft NHS.

In West Virginia we saw: Midland Trail Scenic Highway (60), Kanawha Falls, New River Gorge National River and the New River Bridge - the longest single arch suspension bridge in the Western Hemisphere.

Charleston, West Virginia: West Virginia State Capitol, West Virginia War Memorial and Governor’s Mansion.

In Frankfort, Kentucky, we saw: Buffalo Trace Distillery (tour), Kentucky State Capitol (tour), Governor’s Mansion (tour), Old State Capitol, Liberty Hall Historic Site, Ziegler House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Viet Nam War Memorial and Daniel and Rebecca Boone’s grave in the Frankfort Cemetery.

On the last day before returning to Indianapolis, we stopped in Louisville, Kentucky were we saw the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory.

We drove 1,295 miles on this great road trip.
