"Should I get my brother this Spice Girls CD?" Laura wrinkled her nose as she inspected the album. Kelly glanced up from the single she was looking at. "Yeah I guess. You can get him some of those cards to go with it," she suggested. "Oh good idea," Laura grabbed the CD and the girls headed to the checkout line. They made their purchases, then exited Target, walking to the main section of the mall. The girls meandered through the mall and when they reached Gottschalks, they noticed a large gathering of people. "I wonder what's going on?" Kelly inquired. "Let's go find out," Laura suggested. They made their way to the front of the crowd, where they observed five guys singing. A scream escaped Laura's mouth. "What's your problem?" Kelly asked. "I just saw Nick Carter," Laura exclaimed. Kelly scratched her head, trying to recall a face. "Who's that?" she asked. "Oh you did not just say that," Laura said increduously. "Yes I did," Kelly told her. "Who is he?" "Only the finest guy in our whole school," said Laura, exasperated by her friend's lack of knowledge of Nick. Kelly gave her a weird look. "I thought you liked Steve." "Oh I do," she explained. "But Nick's really cute. He's in my English class." She pointed to a tall blond guy on stage. "He's okay," Kelly admitted. "But who's that fine guy standing to the left of him?" "That's Kevin Richardson." At this, a girl with long blond hair, about 5'4, wearing a short black skirt and a gray sweater turned around and shushed the two friends. "I can talk if I want to," Laura said indignantly. "No, I'm trying to listen to my AJ sing," the girl informed her. "Which one's AJ?" Kelly asked, but Laura ignored her, "Oh he's yours? Does he know this?" "I hope so," she smirked. "I'm his girlfriend." "Oh what's your name?" Kelly asked. "Antonia," she replied. The girls introduced themselves and began a more friendly conversation. Antonia told them about the New Year's party All Access was performing at. "All Access?" Kelly looked confused. Laura rolled her eyes. "The guys' group. Where have you been?" "I don't know," Kelly answered. Laura then glanced at her watch. When she saw the time, she tugged on Kelly's arm, indicating it was time to go. The friends said goodbye to Antonia, then departed from the mall. All the way home, they discussed the upcoming New Year's party and the five guys that would be performing there.
Part 2
Nicole flopped down on the couch in her family roon, weary after her exhausting day of cleaning. To ready her house for the huge New Year's bash she was hosting, Nicole had vacuumed and dusted every room, as well as picked up the piles of junk that seemed to gather and cleaned all the bathrooms. Nicole mopped the sweat off her forehead with the back of her hand and pushed her short brown hair out of her face. Just as she settled into a comfortable position, the phone rang loudly. "Hello?" she said breathlessly. "Nicole?" the voice on the other line hesitated. This is Brian Littrell, of All Access." "Oh hi Brian," she gushed, trying to remain calm although she had a huge crush on the person she was speaking with. "I'm just calling to confirm the time for tonight," he informed her. "Is 8:00 still okay?" "Yeah that's good," she answered. "The party starts at 9:00, so that wil give you about an hour to do a sound check or whatever." "Cool. See ya then." Brian hung up. Nicole placed the phone back on the receiver then grinned to herself as she went to get ready for the biggest social event of the year. Later that afternoon, Laura held up her hand to inspect her freshly painted nails. "What do you think of this color?" she asked as she thrust her hand into Kelly's face, who was reading a magazine. Kelly looked at her friend's shimmery silver nail polish. "I like it," she assured her. The girls had just hit the after-Christmas sales at the mall and were relaxing at Kelly's home until the party that night. Laura waved her hands in an attempt to make her polish dry faster. Kelly glanced at the clock. "On my gosh!" she yelped, tossing her magazine aside. "It's 7:30! Sally's going to be here in an hour!" Laura sprang out of her seat and the girls quickly began dressing for the party. Kelly slipped into an olive green sweater and khaki pants that perfectly complemented her brown hair and eyes, as well as her tanned skin. Laura wore black pants and a bright blue sweater that off-set her red hair and blue eyes. After changing, the girls trooped into the bathroom to fix their hair and apply make-up. In contrast to the impression that they were pressed for time, they found themselves waiting for Sally. "Where is she?" complained Kelly. "Oh you know Sally," Laura reminded her. "She's always ten minutes late." Kelly sighed, "You're right." As soon as the words left her mouth, a horn beeped. The girls walked outside and saw Sally waiting in her burgundy Nissan Sentra. Laura quickly hopped into the passenger seat, while Kelly relunctantly climbed in the back. "I got shotgun on the way home," Kelly stated. "Okay, okay," Laura gave in, then immediately began a long dissertation on Nick. "Wait," Sally interrupted. "Who's Nick again?" "He's that really fine guy in my English class," Laura explained. "I know I've shown him to you." "See Laura? I'm not the only one who doesn't know who Nick Carter is!" Kelly interjected. The three friends continued chatting until they pulled up at Nicole's house. They walked inside, discovering the party to have already begun. Numerous couples were dancing to the music provided by All Access, while others were talking or eating. They stood frozen for a few minutes, overwhelmed by the chaotic activity. "Kelly!" a voive called. She turned around a saw a short girl with black hair and green eyes, wearing an emerald green dress, bouncing toward her. "Sky Lynn!" Kelly returned the greeting, then introduced her friends. "This is Sally and Laura." The girls said hello and then Laura dragged Sally to the location of the food. Kelly and Sky Lynn continued to talk. "I didn't know you were going to be at this party!" Sky Lynn said loudly, so she would be heard over the noise. "It was kinda a last minute thing," Kelly told her about seeing All Access perform in the mall. "Personally, they're the reason I'm here," Sky Lynn giggled. "AJ is so cute! Too bad he has a girlfriend." She wrinkled her nose. Kelly nodded, glad Laura had told her which guy was which. Their conversation continued for a few more minutes, until Sky Lynn was whisked away by some other friends. Kelly then joined Laura and Sally at the food table, just in time to catch the end of Laura's commentary on how Nick looked tonight.
Part 3
An hour and a half into the party, All Access took a short break to rest their voices. Laura noticed Antonia and another girl chatting with them. "Hey Kelly," Laura tugged on her arm. "Let's go have Antonia introduce us to the guys." Before Kelly could protest, Laura marched toward Antonia and the boys. Sally shrugged and her and Kelly followed close behind. "Hi Antonia!" Laura greeted her. "Why don't you introduce me to your friends?" "Um okay," Antonia gave her a weird look, then noticed Kelly standing behind her. "Laura, Kelly this is Nick, Brian, AJ, Kevin, and Howie and my best friend Kara." She gestured to a girl with shoulder-length brown hair and hazel eyes standing next to her. Everyone exchanged greetings. Antonia returned to her converstation with AJ and Brian, while Kara began talking to Howie. Laura pushed her way to where Nick was standing. "Hi Nick," she said nervously. "Hey," he said in return. "Aren't you in my English class?" Laura looked surprised. "Yeah," she replied. "I didn't think you noticed me." After talking for a few more minutes, Nick asked her to dance and Laura gladly obliged. Meanwhile, Kelly, Sally and Kevin, were engaged in a loevly discussion. "Kevin, why haven't I ever seen you on campus before?" Kelly inquired. "I don't know," Kevin answered. "I guess it is because we don't have any classes together." "Gee Kelly, I thought for sure you would have noticed a cute guy like him." Sally said with a smirk. Kelly elbowed her friend and Kevin blushed deep red. After their break, All Access resumed their position and were soon performing their last song. The party-goers all celebrated the New Year's arrival and the party began to wind down. Soon Nicole was left alone with Brian, the last member of All Access to depart. "Brian," Nicole began, "thank you so much for performing. You guys did a great job." "Aw, it was nothing," Brian shrugged off the compliment. "Well if you ever have another party, we would be happy to sing. You have my number, right?" "Of course," she said. "Well I better finish cleaning up." "Oh, ok," Brian said. He seemed relunctant to leave. "Well I guess I will see you when school starts again." Hopefully before then, Nicole thought, but said, "Ok, bye," out loud. Brian left and she collapsed, exhausted from her night of fun.
