HISTORY
Born in Al Kuwait, Qurac, Fatima was the first child of Yosuf Amin and
Shazia Amin. Although Ahmad had a successful career as a professor of
economics at the Al Kuwait University, he decided to move the family to
the United States a year after Fatima's birth to escape both the
oppressive Qurac government and the frequent violent civil upheavals.
Offered a position at the University of Portsmouth, the family set up there
and, after the usual adjusting period, settled happily into the
community. Ten years after the move Shazia gave birth to a son, Yosuf
(Joseph).
Fatima was a fairly well adjusted child who, despite having to cope
with occasional racism from her peers, made friends quickly in Portsmouth
and maintained fairly high grades throughout her school years. In
2016, however, tragedy struck Fatima. While attending a political rally
for state Senator Steven Niles, Fatima's parents were among the
twenty-five people killed in an explosion set off by the Kobra Cult. Similar
assassination attempts were conduct all over the country by the Cult,
supposedly in response to a CIA funded hit on their leader and demi-god
Kobra. Fatima was severely injured in the blast and local medical genius
Dr. Pietr Cross was called in to try to save her life when she was
judged beyond the abilities of local hospitals.
Cross proved able to save Fatima through the use of a cutting edge,
experimental nano-machine surgery, which fixed what would have otherwise
have been irreparable spinal damage. Despite the machines and Cross's
extensive knowledge of optics, Fatima remained blinded by the explosion
though, a condition currently incurable by medical science.
Sympathetic with Fatima, Cross continued to work with her to find a way to heal
the damage.
It was during this time that Fatima learned that Cross was in fact the
JSA hero Dr. Mid-nite and inevitably she began to pester him to take
her on as a pupil so that she could help prevent such events as the one
that killed her parents. Although initially reluctant Cross, after much
badgering, agreed to train her, fearing that she was not likely to give
up and might injure herself in an attempt to prove her worth. His
terms for such training though were that she continue to attend college and
not to act without his supervision. Fatima eagerly accepted.
After a year or so of training, Dr. Mid-nite eventually allowed Fatima
to join him on the occasional local excursion as Nite-Owl. Although
she has proven herself fairly capable on these adventures, he remains
skeptical of encouraging such behavior, having seen his share of death and
tragedy during his years on the JSA. Fatima currently resides on
campus at the University of Portsmouth where she pursues a major in
psychology and a minor in religious studies (she is also a practicing Sunni
Muslim) and works as a student tutor to make ends meet. Her brother Yosuf
lives with his uncle in Boston. She occasionally visits them.
Currently she has been attempting to further her pursuits as Nite-Owl
exactly as Mid-nite feared she would. Since he has refused to induct
her into the JSA reserves or nominate her for a position on Young
Justice, Fatima has begun to look elsewhere for a place to utilize her skills.
This remains a bone of contention between the two.
PERSONALITY
Although a fairly normal, intelligent teenage girl before the
explosion, Fatima within the last few years has become a much quieter,
contemplative person, with a fierce determination to surmount the difficulties
before her (that of her handicap, schooling, and vigilante career). She
seldom spends much time with anyone her own age, preferring to use her
free hours in study or training.
POWERS/WEAKNESSES
Unlike Dr. Mid-nite (past and present) Fatima is entirely blind and no
technology can currently circumvent or aid this handicap. Otherwise
she is in peak physical condition for someone her age and weight, and in
fact possesses slightly enhanced strength and endurance from the
nano-technology inside of her (without the machines, however, she would also
suffer paralysis from the waist down). She carries similar gear as
Mid-nite, including blackout bombs and an assortment of crime fighting
weapons, although she possesses none of his medical skills. She is
proficient in two martial arts although is not a master of either.
Costume: Nite-Owl wears a similar costume as the short-lived Dr.
Midnight, consisting of black spandex with green highlights.
