History:
Malcom was born to be a hero, even if he didn’t know it til he was 14.
Both of his parents had been minor heroes on the Teen Titans and were
‘founders’ of the first Titans West. But this too he did not learn til
he was older. What he knew as a youngster is that he had a need to be
the best. He started walking at 2. At 7, he told his parents that he’d
given it a lot of thought and he wanted to be an Olympic Athlete. His
dad, an ex golden glove boxing champ was quite happy, even if Junior
couldn’t pronounce decathlon... the sport(s) he wanted to be in. The
Duncans hired a trainer to help Junior after school. Mal Jr. would have
made the Olympics, if he hadn’t disobeyed his trainer at age 10. Mal
Jr.
wanted an actual ‘test’ so without telling his coach, he signed up for
the San Francisco marathon. Mal not only won his age group but came in
25th overall.
This brought him to the attention of Wesley Dodds, then the Dean of
Theodore Knight Academy, and the ‘new’ Flash. Flash wanted Mal at the
Academy, he felt this was one of the reasons for the school to find new
blood for the hero community( Bart had done zero research and so did
not
know that Mal’s parents were team mates of his cousin). After talks
with
both Dodds and the Duncans, Bart got Mal jr. a full scholarship for the
Academy, which Sanderson Hawkins honored when he took over as Dean.
At first Mal jr. felt his hopes of gold were going to be taken away and
that he’d never get gold in 2016, but when he got to the school he
realized he was with people like himself striving for perfection of
body. Mal got along with all of his classmates, because even though he
was quite competitive he always kept it very friendly.
Mal was however unaware that he was being groomed to be a superhero,
til
he met Wild Cat. Mal was practicing in the gym, when Wild Cat walked in
before a guest lecture and asked Mal to “show me what you got, kid.”
Perhaps if Wild Cat was 20 years younger the fight would’ve been over
in
5 minutes, but as it was it took Wild Cat a good 1/2 hour to put Mal
away. Wild Cat told Mal that he had the right stuff and said he’d like
to help train Mal. As Mal was no fool, he quickly said yes.
For Mal’s 16th birthday, Wild Cat gave Mal his own costume and told him
that IF he wanted to be on YJ, he was ‘in like flynn’. Mal was sooo
happy and his parents were so proud of him that night as he put his
costume on.
Currently Black Cat is patrolling Chicago, or as he sometimes jokes to
his sister, is in the Minors waiting for his call up to the big
leagues....
Powers and Weapons:
Black Cat has no super powers. As with most graduates of the Knight
Academy he’s accomplished unarmed combatant. Black Cat also has almost
super levels of endurance. Mal has also been told by his mentor that if
he had gone into a career as a boxer, he’d have been as big as Ali or
Holifield.
He has refused to wear his father’s strength-augmenting exo-skeleton,
as
Mal Jr. prefers to rely on his own strength and wits. The only
‘changes’
in his suit he has allowed his mom to make was to add more padding. Her
view of ‘padding’ is a weaved in exo-skeleton like the Bumble Bee
outfit, which deflects most blade weapons and small-caliber
projectiles.
Personality:
While Mal was on Young Justice with Wild Cat’s real son 13, they never
really got along. It wasn’t for lack of Mal’s trying, but simply that
they both had two very different styles. Mal is an over achiever, he
wants to be the best that he can be. However, he has always made a
point
to keep any competition between himself and team mates on a friendly
level. Mal knows that his life might depend on them liking him so tries
to be likable
