HISTORY
Brainiac 5.2, the Legionaires' own socially inept
scientific genius, would would much
rather spend his time tinkering in the lab than
fraternizing with his teammates!
Despite his distant nature, however, "Brainy" has devised
a vast array of weapons that
aid the Legionnaires in their crimefighting, from their
astounding Telepathic Earplugs to his
own personal force-field belt!
Recently, Brainiac 5 was upgraded by an anomaly and began
calling himself Brainiac
5.1. Brainy can now access his force-field via the
circles on his head as well as many
other much needed upgrades, including a sense of humor.
Over the years, Brainy formed a very strong bond with Kara Zor-El, Supergirl. When she died at the hands of the Anti-Monitor his mind and heart snapped. Brainy led a team of Legionnaires to the 20th Century and saved Kara, altering time in the process. Additionally, by saving her, the lives of ten Legionnaires and Superman were lost in her stead. Angry, Kara rejected him and his already unstable mind broke completely. Backed by the power of the Miracle Machine, Brainy took control of the UP and ruled it with an iron thumb for five years. During this time his former allies in the Legion were hunted down, and when caught were imprisoned. Eventually, a group of heroes from the 20th Century, along with Supergirl, Karate Kid, Chlorophyll Kid and Rebound returned and overthrew Brainy's rule. In the process, Brainy left to the past in an attempt to set things right again.
This time out, Brainy succeeded in saving Superman as well. Though both he and Kal-El seemed lost. Six years later Superman's body was recovered -- with Brainy's personality residing within. Supergirl eventually found Brainy's body and oversaw the return of each man to their rightful forms. During the transfer, another accident occured and Brainy was believed disintegrated. He was actually transported across space and is currently trying to atone for his crimes alongside other members of the Legion currently believed to be dead.
Brainy continues to have strained relations with Andromeda while pining after his one true love, Supergirl.
While on one away mission with his Legion team-mates, Brainy, and the others, found themselves hopping from parallel reality to parallel reality. On one such reality, they encountered, and were massacred by, the Blight. Only Brainy, and possibly Chuck Taine, survived as Brainy set an explosive time-displacement in effect--though the escape nearly killed him, and he lost Chuck in the process. Waking up in the year 2020, being administered on by Val Armorr, he has joined Val's new Legion.
