Janet Damita Jo Jackson
Born: May 16th, 1966 in Gary, Indiana, USA
Who is Janet Jackson? She cannot really be defined in one page, or a million pages. She is a unique person with a unique frame of mind and a ravashing voice. Janet is the youngest of nine children of the famous Jackson family. Her parents are Katherine and Joseph Jackson. She later moved to Los Angeles at the age of Four. When she was Seven, she made her performing debut in Las Vegas with her brothers of the famous Jackson Five. At Nine years old, she joined them on a television appearance. From 1977 to 1979 she worked on the cast of Good Times and from 1981 to 1982 she was cast in the program Diff'rent Strokes. And between 1984 and 1985 she played a role in the show Fame. It was around this time that Janet married a singer from the group "El Debarge", James Debarge. She was 18 at the time and was 18 when the marriage was anulled.
In 1982, she signed with A&M Records and recorded her first self-titled debut album "Janet Jackson", which was
followed by the album "Dream Street" in 1984. Just two years later, Janet took 'control' of her vocal career and came out with the album "Control" in which she lets the world know that she is ready to break into the industry with her own style and creations. Janet made her first concert tour in 1990 with the album, "Rhythm Nation 1814". By the end of that year she had picked up EIGHT Billboard awards! Janet became the first artist in history to have Seven Top 5 singles from One album. This was a great accomplishment, but she didn't stop at that.
In 1993, she released the album, "janet." in which Miss Jackson produced a brand new self-image. She had become a great woman of sex appeal and beauty after starring in the movie with Tupac Shakur in 1992, John Singleton's "Poetic Justice".
In 1995, she released the compilation of her previous albums on "Design of a Decade" on the A&M records label. It was an album compiling the last ten years of record-breaking singles. Including two new singles, "Runaway" and "24Play". It was also around this time that Janet did a duet with her brother, Michael which appeared on his album, "HIStory". This single was called, "Scream". Janet and Michael produced an original music video that contained many new concepts for future video layouts.
Still Janet hasn't felt fulfilled with her music career. In 1997, she came to the start of a new feeling in her artistry with
the album "The Velvet Rope". It features her feelings and emotions of what she went through in her personal life and what she goes through now. She is letting her fans behind and beyond her own 'velvet rope' to see who she really is. It is meant to be a very intimate album and highly spiritual. She decided that she would do a world tour for the album, starting in Rotterdam. Her tour was then slated to show on HBO, October 11th, 1998 (in which the rapper Q-Tip made a guest appearance). This tour ended in Honolulu, Hawaii around January 1999.
At this time, her relationship with Rene Elizondo became very clear and public. He contributed to parts of the album(as well as on previous albums) and other creative colaborations with the videos. However, she explained that she is not and did not want to get married any time soon. Also she stated that she was not ready to be a mother because she did not feel that she was going to be a "good enough" parent.
The year 2000 brought no new albums for Miss Janet, however she collaborated on a film
with Eddie Murphy. It was the sequel to the memorable comedy, Nutty Professor...Entitled, "Nutty Professor II: The Klumps" She played Denise Gaines, who is the girlfriend of Sherman Klump(Eddie Murphy). This film allowed Janet to contribute a single to the soundtrack. Her song "Doesn't Really Matter" was a hit single in the summer of 2000. Her colorful video included very unique concepts of choreographed routines with an interesting futuristic theme. It was also around this time that Janet and Rene publically announced their secret marriage that had lasted many years, and their divorce which was a tragic surprise for many.
Now in 2001, Janet has released her new album, "All For You", in which she sings about her broken relationships, search for new love, and new found freedom in her life. Look out for the current singles "All For You" (Title Track), and "Someone to Call my Lover". Check out the videos for those hits. Upcoming releases from the album will most likely be "Come on Get Up" and "Son of a Gun" featuring artist, Carly Simon. Also, watch out for Miss Jackson to come to your town for the new tour which is currently on the road, All For You!---Wanna hear some of Janet's very own thoughts, as told to David Ritz?
