Yellow Dragonfly Construction Log

Chapter I - The Damage

The Dragonfly pictured here was delivered to Visalia CA for me to receive a familiarization check-out. Then after a month of shake down, I was to deliver it to Philadelphia.

When the seller landed at Visalia, he struck the prop. All plans came to a screeching halt.

A decision was made to remove the canard, and deliver it to my shop, where I would (under the supervision of an A&P) convert the landing gear configuration from a Mark I to a Mark II. The prop strike was partially a result of the canard being too springy. The gear change should eliminate this problem, and reduce the potential of future prop strikes.

Upon removal of the canard, it was discovered that the canard center section was damaged to a non-airworthy condition.

This log documents the removal, repair, conversion and reassembly.

One blade completly gone, the other
two blades fractured at the root.

Engine supported on rolling platform.
Wheels completely off the ground.
This is a beautifully installed 0-200

When the canard was removed,
the damage to the center
section was noticed.

Here is a shot of me moving the DF
from one hanger to another.

John Mason was kind enough to allow
us to store the parts in his hanger.

Here it is, stuffed in the corner
of John's hanger. Thanks John!

I still had to get the canard home.
Kids, don't try this with your Mazda.
