Martin Mörck’s favourite issue is "In the Wake of Columbus" from 1992, comprising three stamps which depict Swedish Atlantic-going ships from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. This assignment, from an idea to the finished stamps, was initiated to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Columbus discovery of America and inspired Martin Mörck to study and research in various archives and naval history libraries. The motif subject of ships was not specified from the beginning. But for Martin, who lives by the sea on the Swedish west coast and is at sea almost every day and has always loved ships, the choice of motif was very clear. The miniature sheet with the three ships looks like one continuous naval painting of the classical type. However, for technical reasons it was not possible to make a large engraving with the three motifs on one and the same die. Instead, Martin Mörck made three separate steel engravings which were imprinted on to a copper cylinder. Then, he engraved all the lines connecting the three stamps directly on this cylinder. And each line was engraved 32 times with the same precision! He had never done anything like this before in his long career as an engraver. Martin Mörck studied at the Goldsmiths College and the College of Industrial Art in Göteborg. Then, in 1975 at the age of twenty, Martin Mörck became an apprentice to Arne Wallhorn, who taught him the basics of steel engraving. |
