Chapter 7

The doctor walked into the room, and saw that almost, if not everyone, had blood-shot eyes. He knew that either they were crying, or they were fighting it back.
"She has a chance of living. It isn't as good as we wished...but, she has a chance." The doctor said.
"Do you know the percent, by chance?" Erin asked.
"Yes. I do. She has about a 65% chance." The doctor answered.
"Is that good?" Nick asked.
"It's better than half." The doctor said.
"Yeah..." Nick said, looking down at the floor.
"Do you know what happened to her?" The doctor asked.
"Yeah...we were there." Howie said.
"Yes. It's a long story." Brian said.
"Do you think you have enough time to tell me?" The doctor asked.
Brian told him the story, and by the time that he had finished, the doctor looked almost ghostly pale.
"He did that?" The doctor asked, with a squeaky voice. "He did that?"
"Yeah." Nick said, looking through the little window in the door.
"If you like," the doctor said, "you could go in there and see her."
"I could?" Nick asked.
"Sure. You can't stay long though." The doctor said.
"That's OK. I don't need to stay long." Nick said.
The doctor opened the door for him, and lead him inside.
"There she is." The doctor said.
Nick went and held her hand, and said: "Don't leave me. You can't. We've been through a lot, but this is by far the biggest thing. Please, stay. Don't go. Please, don't go."
"I won't." Jennifer whispered.
Nick, filled with joy, bent down and hugged her.
"I was so scared..." Nick said, still holding her gently.
"Sorry...didn't mean to scare you." Jennifer said.
"It wasn't your fault. It was that...Paul guy's fault." Nick said, looking at her pale face, which was gradually getting some color back.
"I still feel some-what guilty." Jennifer said.
"You have no reason to." Nick said.
"Are you sure?" Jennifer asked in a groggy voice.
"Yeah. I'm sure." Nick said, holding her hand now.
"OK. Whatever you say, I believe." Jennifer said, opening her eyes slowly.
The doctor pointed on Nick's shoulder. His time was up.
"I have to go now. I will be just in that room." Nick said, pointing to the room outside of the door. "Don't you leave on me."
"I'll try." Jennifer said.
"You won't..." Nick said. "Promise me that you'll stay."
"I...promise." Jennifer said.
"OK-you promised now. You can't go." Nick said, kissing her hand, and then walking out into the waiting room outside of her door.
"How was she?" Brian asked as soon as Nick walked in.
"Better than I thought she'd be." Nick said. "She even became concious!"
"That's good..." Danielle said, relieved.
"Yeah, I know!" Nick said, running his hands through his hair.
