James BRYAN It is assumed that if there was a James Junior Bryan that there was a senior. However, from what I understand of this time period James Senior could have been the grandfather to James Junior. The mention here of James Bryan is purely hypothetical.

James Junior BRYAN is the father to John BRYAN. We know he was married to a Mary but that is all we know at this time. I assume he was born in Virginia in the mid seventeen hundreds. If you have run across this in your research please contact me with any information so that I may update this information.

John BRYAN was born in 1783 Hampshire County Virginia , which is in West Virginia now. He married Esther POOL in Virginia and had three children by her. John would have been at a ripe age for war when the War of 1812 started and I assume he went to fight. When he was away Esther died. Shortly after that he moved away. Maybe because he had back pay or a land grants in Ohio. After he arrived in Shelby County Ohio he married Nancy GALLOWAY and had fifteen children by her. I am sure that John must have had brothers or sisters but they are unknown to me. If you have any information on his brothers, sisters or children please let me know. I am also interested in knowing where he lived in Hampshire County.

Henry Thomas BRYAN was born in 1883 in Ohio. He was the thirteenth child of John BRYAN. Henry fought in the Civil War and after the war he returned home to work as a day laborer. At some point in time he moved from Shelby County Ohio to Montgomery County Ohio. In 1900 to 1901 He lived at 300 South Williams. In 1907 to 1908 Henry lived at 23 South Olive Dayton Ohio. Henry died in February 14, 1909. If you have any other information on him or any of his brothers or sisters please relay this information to me.

Elmer Newton BRYAN was born March of 1868 in Dayton Ohio. He was the sixth child of Henry Thomas Bryan. His friends called him Newt and his primary trade was a carpenter. In 1909 he lived at 26 South Galloway with his wife, children, mother and his brother Milton. In 1910 to 1911 he and his family lived at 32 West Hartford. In 1911 to 1914 he lived at the address of 20 West Hartford. In 1914 to 1920 the family lived at 1135 Home Avenue Dayton Ohio. Sometime in 1920 the family moved to Roswell New Mexico. In the Chaves County New Mexico "Index to Deaths" it lists Elmer Newton BRYAN’s death at June 7, 1924 from a diabetic coma. On the same page is listed Margarite Bryan at one month old died December 7, 1926, this was Newts’ granddaughter.

Elmer Leo Bryan was born August 2, 1900 in Dayton Ohio. He was the first born to Elmer Newton Bryan. Elmer Leo was a lover of education. He loved to teach and go to school. One of his first jobs was a high school teacher before he went back to college for his masters degree in chemistry. He worked for oil companies as a chemist in the 1930s and 1940s. When World War II came around his knowledge led to innovations in the aerospace industry for the war effort. In the late 1940s he returned to teaching. In the early 1950s he worked for Reedley College at Reedley California as a chemistry teacher. "Silent Spring" by Rachel Carson was required reading for his class. This upset many of the student’s parents that were farmers. This was the McCarthy era and the time of the "Red Scare" and "Witch Hunts." Many of the farmers, in the community were furious with Elmer Leo for his required reading and had him investigated. Elmer Leo had been a member of Technocracy and when this was found out he was "black balled" a communist. He lost his job because of this and had to move to find a new job in San Bernardino which he also lost after while. Then he moved on to Redondo Beach California to teach a couple of years before he lost that job. He then moved on to Calexico California to teach. After a couple of years of teaching there the Superintendent of Schools called him into his office. The Superintendent told him that the FBI had been to his office to see him and told him that Elmer was a Communist. The Superintendents said to the FBI agents that he did not care, that Mr. Bryan was an excellent teacher and that it was hard to find good teachers that would live in Calexico. Elmer Leo Bryan retired from Calexico Union High School in 1968 and moved to Ojai California where he lived until his death in July 1972.
