Nichole Amber Canfield
My Precious Little Girl!
Age 6

Adorable, Funny, Out Going, Loving, and a Bundle of Energy!  That is how I would describe my "Baby Girl".  She has no fear and yet can be very fearful.  I know it sounds weird but that is my Nicki!  So full of life, I look into her eyes and see the innocence of childhood I never had.  In so many ways I see myself and yet I have to ask the question "or is that what you wanted to be like?"

Nichole is 8 years old and was supposed to be going into the third grade in July (Year Round Schools).  But instead she went back to the same classroom with the same kids.  Is it as hard  for her as it is for me? Does she even realize what she is missing out on?

Nichole was diagnosed as being "Mildly Autistic" in February, 1998. After going through test after test since July of 1997, she got put in a Special Education class. Needless to say I went through a period of "What did I do wrong?" blues.  During these "blues" a friend of mine said one thing to me that helped me more than anything else did.  "Just remember Nichole today is the same Nichole as yesterday no matter what she has been diagnosed with.  She hasn't changed one bit."  Even after long hours of doing research and studying,  asking question after question, nothing has helped me deal with my childs learning disability more than that one statement.

I will be giving you an update on Nicholes progress and how she is doing.  If you would like to learn more about learning disabilities and how children & parents can cope see my links at the bottom of this page.

Progress Report: Nichole has improved so much. Her last IEP meeting went better than expected. I truly believe that her progress had alot to do with her teacher Mrs. Jones. Nichole is a precious child and very ready to learn. Nichole just did not know how to begin learning. Mrs. Jones was the key Nichole was needing to open her door to the learning world. Mrs. Jones is a wonderful teacher and we are glad Nicki got the opprotunity to be in her classroom and learn from her. Because Mrs. Jones has taught deaf children prior to teaching at Monte Vista. She taught all of her students sign language. That was what helped Nicki become a excellent student and a fast learner.

I even got the opportunity to work in their classroom for a short time. I loved every minute of it. Mrs. Jones is always cheerful and very encouraging to her students. I loved the enthusiastic atmosphere in her classroom. Mrs. Jones is no longer teaching at Monte Vista. As of July 1, 1999 Nicki has a new teacher Mrs. Switzer. I know she will love Nicki and teach her just like Mrs. Jones. I am sure Mrs. Switzer is a good teacher, But I have to say WE MISS YOU MRS. JONES!!!!
