President’s Message
All members should plan to attend at least one of the potting sessions scheduled February 10th and March 4th. The object of these potting sessions is for the members to prepare the trees they are donating to the October Show Plant Sale. Diablo Bonsai Club will provide the pots, soil and wire used and the members are asked to provide their own trees. Please bring your own bonsai tools and a piece of plastic to cover your work table. Before you leave the potting session, make sure you clean up around your area and register thee trees you have prepared and the pots you have used.
As a reminder, Basic members are asked to donate two one gallon-sized trees and intermediate members two five gallon-sized trees. You can bring your own trees from home for the potting session or the trees will be available at the nursery for your purchase.
Experienced members of the club will be available at both potting sessions to help the basic members with their trees. It is a good learning experience for the newer members of the club and also helps you get your trees ready for the October Show Plant Sale. You will do all the steps needed to go from nursery stock in a one gallon can to a tree wired and placed in a bonsai pot. The past year we have had a number of group plantings in our plant sale and they have sold for a good price. We are asking intermediate members to consider doing a group planting as one of your donations.
The past few years the club has derived over 70% of its income at the October Show from the sale of trees donated from members to the plant sale. The trees donated to the plant sale should be high quality so that they will sell for a good price and will reflect favorably upon Diablo Bonsai Club as a source of quality trees. DO not use the October Show Plant Sale as a means to get rid of material you no longer want as it reflects poorly on the club if we are trying to sell poor trees at a cheap price.
We had a good turnout of members and spouses at our pot luck dinner party on January 15th kicking off the Diablo Bonsai Clubs 20th year. It was very encouraging to see some of our newest members attending the function. Our thanks to Don Meeker for organizing and setting up the food. Our thanks also to Sensei Akebane for donating a Bunjin style juniper, which was raffled off.
With this newsletter we are including the schedule of activities for the year 2001 so you can mark your calendar for the year. Also at the February meetings, Tom Fong has prepared the "2000 Financial Highlights" statement and copies will be available for those who are interested. This statement will give members an idea of where the clubs money comes from and where it is spent.
Scott Couture and Byron Nobriaga have been selected to be the co-chairmen of the October Show for 2001. They will be asking for members to head the various show committees in the near future. In the future, monthly meetings of the committee chairs will be asking for volunteers to work on their committees during the show. To have a successful shop we need everyone's' participation.
Please welcome the following new members: Richard Mitro of San Ramon and Gary Parker of Lafayette.
If you have not paid your dues for the year 2001 yet, please get a check in the mail to Tom Fong immediately so that we can finalize the membership roster and get it printed.
Our thanks to Norm Wanek and his crew comprised of Tom Fong, Bob Eden, Fred Kovar, Scott Couture and Bob Evans for pruning and cleaning the Bonsai Exhibit at the Heather Farms Garden Center. Norm Provides the upkeep of the trees during the remainder of the year and gets a work party together once a year to do the major cleanup.
There are five (5) pots and two (2) stands from the estate sale of Phil Hermann available if anyone is interested please contact Bob Evans.
